PortaL ght the monthly Newsletter of West Portal Lutheran Church and School
In the coming weeks, we find one
Church Year coming to a close and
the beginning of a New Church
Year. The last weeks of the church
year in November focus on what is
often called “the End Times,” while
the season of Advent prepares us
for the Second Coming of our Lord.
More on that in the December Por-
taLight!
The End Times are often misunder-
stood to be something that is far off
in the future, which isn’t really nec-
essarily accurate or true. The End
Times is best defined as the time be-
tween the first coming of our Lord Jesus
and the time of His return. In other
words, the End Times are NOW!
The letter to the Hebrews begins
with these words:
The End Times “Long ago, at many times and in
many ways, God spoke to our fa-
thers through the prophets. But in
these last days He has spoken to us
by His Son…”
The Greek word for “last” is escha-
ton (escaton). The study of the End
Times in theology is called
“Eschatology.” So the first thing we
learn about the End Times is that
they were ushered in with the life,
death and resurrection of Jesus. In
these last days God speaks to us
through the Word Made Flesh and
God’s written and spoken Word.
When we look at the Gospels, and
especially the Revelation of St.
John, we can see that all of what
has been prophesied is unfolding
before our very eyes. In Matthew
chapter 24, we hear Jesus saying,
“You will hear of wars and rumors
of wars (check!), but see to it that
you are not alarmed. Such things
must happen, but the end is still to
come. Nation will rise against na-
tion, kingdom against kingdom
(check and check!). There will be

famines (check!) and earthquakes (check!) in vari-
ous places. All of these are the beginning of birth
pains!”
But WHEN will it happen…? Today? Next
month? A thousand years from now? That’s the
real question, isn’t it? The answer: No one knows.
No one! Many will come saying “here He is…or
there He is”. We are not to listen to these false
prophets. We have all we need to prepare for the
end of time in God’s Holy Word to us. That is
why we are urged to be prepared…to be alert and
watch! Like a thief in the night, His return will be
without warning.
But we need not fear. In fact, the Christian looks
forward to our Lord’s coming again, even pray-
ing: “Come. Lord Jesus, come quickly!”
The thought of the “Day of our Lord’s Return”
used to frighten me. Not anymore. Now I’m actu-
ally looking forward to it. The End Times are
now!
Blessings,
Pastor Todd Arnold

Dear Members of West Portal Lutheran Church
& School,
In a letter sent to the Call Task Force of the Lu-
theran Church of the Risen Savior, I have accept-
ed their call to me to serve as Pastor of their
congregation in Green Valley AZ. However, we
did agree that my start date there will be on or
around January 1, 2017. This will allow Kathy to
finish the semester as middle school science and
religion teacher, and I will be able to assist in the
transition at the church. I will be also finishing
the semester as catechism teacher for the 8th
grade classes and will be here for the Thanksgiv-
ing, Advent and Christmas services.
I am so grateful to God to have served among
the folks here at West Portal Lutheran in San
Francisco. I was humbled at receiving your call
and privileged to assist in the wonderful minis-
try here at both the church and the school. My
children went from kids to adults here, and I
will leave with many fond memories.
Please keep my family and me in your prayers
during this time of transition. I will be praying
regularly for you and the people of Risen Savior.
God's richest blessings,
Pastor Todd Arnold

Thanksgiving Daily
“Let us come before Him with thanksgiving and
extol Him with music and song.
For the LORD is the great God,
the great King above all gods.” Psalm 95:2-3
My how the days fly by! It’s already November
2016, and in few short weeks we will once again
come together as a family of faith to celebrate
the Nativity of our Lord Jesus. However, before
the excitement of December, we have several
wonderful opportunities in November for shar-
ing as a community of faith.
On Monday evening November 14th at 7:00 p.m.
in the Scottish Rite Auditorium, the Music Min-
istry of west Portal Lutheran Church and School
will present the Annual Fall Concert. Come and
join us for an evening of music presented by the
WPL Orchestra and the ringing and singing
choirs from both Sloat and Sunset Campuses.
With the coming of November our minds turn
naturally to Thanksgiving, but the Giving of
Thanks is much more than a day filled with tur-
key, football and shopping. We are so blessed by
the students and parents who attend and sup-
port the WPL School. We possess a faithful fac-
ulty and staff dedicated to education and a con-
gregation who supports the mission and minis-
try of the WPL School.
We have been blessed in so many ways by God
our Father. I invite you to join me this month,
not just in a single day of “Thanksgiving”, but to
daily offer prayers of thanksgiving and praise.
We have been placed as a family of faith in this
area of San Francisco for a reason, to proclaim

I was born and raised in San Francisco. My wife,
Irene and I have two sons, Darren and Nathan.
Irene was a teacher at West Portal Lutheran from
1983 to 2008 when she retired. I have been the
Sunset Campus computer teacher for the last 8
years after I retired from 34 years at Pacific Bell,
Southwest Bell, and AT&T where I mainly
worked in Information Technology. In my free
time, I enjoy volleyball, serving at SF Bible
Church, playing piano/violin, and teaching
computers to seniors at our church
met my lovely fiancée, Adrienne (pictured above
with Christian). During the summer I volunteer as
a counselor for Sunset Church's day camp. I enjoy
spending time with family and friends whenever
possible. Adrienne and I are going to be married
in December, and we are happy to be part of the
West Portal Lutheran School family
This month’s newsletter is highlighting our com-
puter teachers on both Sloat and Sunset campus-

er at the Sunset Campus and Christian Nim is the

Michele Boyer - Kindergarten Teacher, Mrs. Hel-
en Tom-Bok - Chairperson of the Bridge Com-
mittee, and I attended the CNH Missional Schools
Workshop at the end of September. We are excit-
ed about all the potential possibilities to grow
God’s Kingdom. We want you to think about the
following:
What is a “mission focused school?”
Those who serve and support a mission focused
school think, plan, and act in alignment with
God’s calling to share the love of Christ with all
nations. The budget, staffing, policies, and priori-

ties are intentionally determined in light of the
role of the church to share the Gospel of Jesus
Christ to their community. The role of the school
is that which extends the mission of the church in
reaching the New Believers through Jesus Christ.
Worship is vibrant and Christ centered
(Chronicles 16:29)
Discipleship is strong, calling members to
grow through the Word (Psalm 119:105)
Service…that connects the community to
Christ (Matthew 5:16)
Outreach is focused on those who do not yet
know Christ as their Savior (Acts 1:8)
Leadership…multiplying servants to multi-
ply ministry. (1Peter 4:10)

Picnic Fun! On October 2nd we had our annual Church and School Picnic. 200+ people worshipped together and then
ate and had fun together. We thank the Lord for our amazing West Portal Family.
Community Bowling Activity A few weeks ago families signed up to spend
time together bowling. We thank our Youth Di-
rector, Daniel Latimore, for coordinating this
effort. We are so blessed that Daniel is filling this
capacity again. We look forward to more family
activities for fun and fellowship.

Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive
Oct. 31—Nov. 16
The Student Council is taking the lead in our annual food drive to help those less fortunate. We will be
collecting non-perishable food items to donate to the food pantry at Christ For All Nations Lutheran
Church operated by the San Francisco Lutheran Nehemiah Project (SFLNP). The SFLNP is a group of
San Francisco and Daly City Lutheran congregations that have joined together to do urban ministry.
This food pantry serves approximately 500 people every Saturday. SFLNP has operated the food pantry
for the past twelve years.
All non-perishable foods are greatly appreciated. The following is a list of
items that are non-perishable and can be kept for long periods of time.
The Student Council has set a goal of collecting 2000 items of food. If we meet that goal, they will reward
the students with a small token of appreciation.
God has richly blessed our school and our church. May we share those blessings with others. Collection
bins will be in the narthex, Haake Hall entryway, and the Sunset school office for your food donations.
Canned meat, fish (i.e.
Spam, tuna, etc.)
Peanut Butter
Soups, stews, and
“meals in a can”

Principal Anna Hu is asking church and school
members if they currently have or will have an
apartment or unit or in-law unit available for one
of our school teachers to rent. If so, please contact
Miss Hu at 415-665-6330 or [email protected].

2016 Christmas Faire Saturday, December 3, 2016
10am to 3pm
Please join us on Saturday, December 3rd at the Sloat Campus for Christmas cheer and merriment! There
will be carnival games, jump houses, food for sale, silent auction, arts & crafts vendors and children sing-
ing! In the busy weeks prior, much planning and work is in progress. We invite you to support WPL in the
following ways to help raise funds for WPL’s enrichment programs and new stage curtains in the Gym.
Silent Auction Donations Needed! - Deadline: November 11, 2016
WE NEED YOUR HELP to secure donations that can be featured in our Silent Auction! Please ask business-
es you frequent for their support or think of an item or service YOU could offer! Personal donations of your
special talents are the most priceless items (i.e. baking with the kids, card making, tutoring, babysitting,
baking for a local charity, etc…) You can raise money for school and help others in need.
Our Silent Auction Letter and Donor Form are available on www.wplsf.com under “For Parents / Parent
Teacher League” as well as on “My Backpack”. Send it electronically to your contacts or print a few copies
and bring them with you when you step out for coffee, for dinner, or your next haircut/manicure. Invite
them to come have fun at the faire and ask if they’d like to make a donation!
Volunteers! - Deadline to sign up: November 20, 2016 (Earn PPP Hours!)
We need tremendous volunteer support in pre-planning and on the day of the faire. The portal for volun-
teer sign-ups will be open November 1st through http://wplsf.ivolunteer.com It’s easy to sign up! The por-
tal will show you the number of available slots and will send you an email so you can confirm your time.
Assignments on a first come first serve basis. Please sign up early!
There are many other areas of the faire where planning is underway. If you are interested in helping in the
planning by being on one of the committees, please feel free to contact them directly below - Vendor Table
sign-ups, Class Projects for the Silent Auction, Bake Sale Coordination, Hospitality Coordination, Caroling
Practice, Carnival Game Coordination, and much, much more! If you can spare some of your time to help
