11 November 2013 Dear Sir/Madam DERBY STREET, KENSINGTON – Streetscape improvement works In early 2014, the City of Melbourne will begin works to improve road safety and amenity at the intersection of Derby Street and Ormond Street. The works are explained below and in the enclosed plan.

The enclosed plan also identifies opportunities for future improvements along the rest of Derby Street. We welcome your feedback and ideas on our proposal to improve the environment of Derby Street in the future.

The City of Melbourne is upgrading many of its streets as part of the Streetscapes program, which aims to enhance our streets and laneways through road and footpath works, landscaping and other improvements. Derby Street and Ormond Street were nominated as a Streetscapes project in 2012 when the community was invited to submit ideas for future projects.

• Widening the footpath and narrowing the road to reduce traffic speed and make it safer for pedestrians to cross

• Seven new trees and garden beds with water-saving Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) treatment, where possible

• Upgrades to meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).

• Installing a new drain from Derby Street along Ormond Street

The cost and timing The $200,000 project is planned to start in late February 2014 and will take approximately 12 weeks to complete. Questions Should you have any questions or concerns about the works planned for the intersection of Derby Street and Ormond Street, please call the Engineering Services Branch on 9658 8711 or email [email protected]

POSSIBLE FUTURE IMPROVEMENTS - Derby Street, between Kensington Road and Tennyson Street The proposal The City of Melbourne recognises the opportunity to make further improvements along the entire length of Derby Street, as part of a broader streetscape design. We are proposing more trees and green spaces, which would provide a shadier, more attractive street consistent with the City of Melbourne’s Urban Forest Strategy.

Page 2: 11 November 2013 - Amazon Web Services...Derby Street and Ormond Street were nominated as a Streetscapes project in 2012 when the community was invited to submit ideas for future projects.

Possible improvements could include:

• Widen the footpath and narrow the roadway on the south-western side of Derby Street between Tennyson Street and Hampden Road

• Additional traffic calming and safer pedestrian routes (consistent with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act)

• Street trees planted in tree pits designed to use rainfall to water the trees before it discharges into the stormwater system (WSUD)

• Increased shading provided in the street through the additional tree planting which reduces the urban heat island effect

• Areas of public open green space, with various possible uses, including: o Garden beds o Community gardens o Seating areas o Grassed nature strip

• Sufficient car parking to meet local demand.

We would particularly appreciate your feedback on the possible uses of the new public open green spaces.

The cost and timing Any future improvement works in Derby Street are subject to future Council funding. Your input is an important part of our budgeting process for future works, and the ways you can get involved are outlined below.
