REFLECTION • REFLEXIÓN

“GO, THEREFORE, AND MAKE DISCIPLES OF ALL NATIONS…”

Just before the passion and suffering of Jesus, his friends and followers saw him being betrayed, denied and condemned. They stood at a distance (no doubt it was more than just 6 feet!) and watched him die a very public death. Some of them even deserted him. When they were told by some of the others that they had seen the Lord, it is no wonder they refused to believe them. Most of them doubted.

Before Jesus ascended to his Father, he passed on and entrusted them with the responsibility of carrying on his mission of proclaiming the good news of the gospel and of establishing the kingdom of God. This ordinary group of men and women were the ones chosen by Jesus to be the heralds and witnesses of the resurrection. Through their words and actions, the world would know that Jesus is alive and more alive and present that ever he was. As Jesus’ earthly life ended, their mission and ministry began.

Today that responsibility now belongs to us. The first friends and followers of Jesus are our ancestors and we are their descendants. It is now up to each of us in our way to carry on the mission and ministry of Jesus. Through us today, the world will know that Jesus is alive, present and active in our world. As Pope Francis says to each of us, “every Christian is a missionary to the extent that they have experienced the love of God in Jesus.”

“VAYAN, PUES, Y HAGAN DISCÍPULOS DE TODAS LAS NACIONES…”

Justo antes de la pasión y el sufrimiento de Jesús, sus amigos y seguidores lo vieron ser traicionado, negado y condenado. Se pararon a distancia (¡sin duda, era más que sólo 2 metros!) y lo vieron morir una muerte muy pública. Algunos de ellos incluso lo abandonaron. Cuando algunos de los otros les dijeron que habían visto al Señor, no es de extrañar que se negaran a creer en ellos. La mayoría de ellos dudaban.

Antes de que Jesús ascendiera a su Padre, les confió la responsabilidad de llevar a cabo su misión de proclamar la buena nueva del Evangelio y de establecer el Reino de Dios. Este grupo ordinario de hombres y mujeres fueron los elegidos por Jesús para ser los heraldos y testigos de la resurrección. A través de sus palabras y acciones, el mundo sabría que Jesús está vivo y más vivo y presente que nunca. Al terminar la vida terrenal de Jesús, comenzó su misión y ministerio,

Hoy esa responsabilidad ahora nos pertenece. Los primeros amigos y seguidores de Jesús son nuestros antepasados y nosotros somos sus descendientes. Ahora depende de cada uno de nosotros en nuestro camino continuar con la misión y el ministerio de Jesús. A través de nosotros hoy, el mundo sabrá que Jesús está vivo, presente y activo en nuestro mundo. Como el Papa Francisco nos dice a cada uno de nosotros, cada cristiano es misionero en la medida en que ha experimentado el amor de Dios en Jesús.

ORDINATION ANNIVERSARY Happy Ordination Anniversary, Fr. Michael! We rejoice with you on May 25 as you celebrate the day you became a priest! We are so blessed to have you in Marshalltown. May God richly bless your ministry. Thank you for walking alongside us at St. Francis of Assisi Parish. You are a delight!

FIRST COMMUNION First Communions were supposed to begin this weekend for 178 children and teens in our parish. These students have been preparing all school year to receive this sacrament of initiation, and now they must wait even longer. As long as we are unable to hold Masses, we cannot share

with them this great gift that Jesus gave us. We hope to hold special Masses for the First Communicants and their families as soon as Masses may resume, most likely later in June.

Many of us feel the emptiness of being unable to receive the Eucharist each week. These young people are in the unique place of learning about the meaning and importance of receiving Jesus’ body and blood, while being unable to experience it yet. Please pray for our youth in First Sacraments preparation this year: for them to wait patiently, for them to keep the knowledge they have gained in their hearts, and for their families to keep the faith alive in their homes during this difficult time.

LA OFICINA PARROQUIAL ESTÁ CERRADA LOS VIERNES DURANTE LA PANDEMIA.

MISA AFUERA DE PENTECOSTÉS El próximo fin de semana (31 de mayo) tendremos dos misas al aire libre en el campo de St. Henry. La misa será en inglés a las 8:30 am y la misa será en español a las 10:30 am. Al igual que con cualquier

actividad al aire libre, los planes pueden cambiar. Regístrese para recibir alertas de mensajes de texto y esté atento a nuestro sitio web y página de Facebook para cualquier anuncio de última hora. Agradecemos su paciencia mientras trabajamos para unirnos para la Santa Misa.
