ANNOUNCEMENTS

With Thanksgiving around the corner, it’s a good time to think about the importance

of fostering gratitude in our children. Being grateful for what we have doesn’t mean that

we ignore the difficult things in our lives nor that gloss over things that can be improved.

But it helps us start from a place of appreciating the things we do have. The Greater

Good Science Center at the University of California Berkeley tells us that “practicing

gratitude has proven to be one of the most reliable methods for increasing happiness and

life satisfaction and it also boosts feelings of optimism, joy, pleasure, enthusiasm, and

other positive emotions.” Gratitude is good for kids, reducing anxiety and depression,

helping them sleep better, strengthening relationships, and making them more resilient

when times are hard.

So how do we help children cultivate an “attitude of gratitude”? Researchers suggest

developing a daily habit of naming something every day that we can be thankful for (a

beautiful day, a hug from a family member, a smile from a friend) is a good place to

start. Gratitude journals can also be an effective tool. A simple spiral notebook where

children reflect on one thing at the end of each day that they were grateful for can be

easy to incorporate into bedtime rituals. Younger children might need to draw a picture

and have parents scribe a sentence for them. If you want to try an on-line tool, check out

http://www.thnx4.org which will lead you through a three-week experience of daily

journaling on gratitude. And consciously modeling gratitude for children is one of the

most powerful things we can do for our kids. Start by vocalizing the small things you

are grateful for each day and invite children to reflect with you.

In the spirit of gratitude, I want to share some of the things about our school that I am

so grateful for:

Edison students – wonderful young people who share their smiles, hugs, and

enthusiasm with us each day and for the privilege of being part of their growth.

Edison families –who support language learning, make sure children come to school

prepared to learn and do their homework each night, and do everything they can to

help provide an enriched education for students.

Edison staff– a truly talented, hard-working, and committed team, constantly seeking

to improve their practice, and committed to the social/emotional and academic

development of children.

SMMUSD and its Board of Education - who have supported our dual language

program for 28 years.

New resources from the Santa Monica Malibu Education Foundation (SMMEF)

through Vision for Student Success that: doubled the number of Edison

instructional aides so that each classroom and our intervention programs receive

their support; provided Edison with a full-time literacy coach (Aileen Salmaggi)

who works with teachers on common core reading and writing, helps assess students

and supports our RTI programs, and; provide professional development for teachers,

theater and visual arts, choral music and poetry, and songwriting programs for

students, and much more.

ANUNCIOS

http://fipcontractors.smmusd.org/edison-new-

construction.aspx.
