SUM MA RY: Nor th-wes t Turkeyencom passes two m ajor tec ton ic un i ts , the Pont ides andthe Anatol ides, separated by the Izmir-Erzincan suture. The Anatol ides, the metamor-phosed northe rn extension of the T aurides, consist of several zones. The more southerlyAfyon Zone is an Early Palaeozoic to Maastr icht ian Tauride shelf- type sequence whichrests on gneisses of the M enderes M assif. T he A fyon Zo ne underw ent greenschist faciesmetamorphism, gradual ly increasing in grade with depth, and overthrust by HP/LTmetamorphic rocks and peridot i tes . A HP/LT metamorphic bel t several hundred ki lo-metres long const i tutes the second Anatol ide zone. There are two tectonic uni ts in theblueschist sequence. A lower m ore recrystallised blueschist unit consists of a thick basalmarb le series ov erlain by meta-cherts , metabasi tes and meta-shales. A n u pper uni t , with awider dis tr ibut ion, shows only incipient HP /LT metam orphism , and consists of shales ,radiolar ian cherts , basic volcanic rocks, pelagic limestones and greywackes. The HP /LTrocks are tectonical ly overlain by a peridot i te nappe, withou t HP/LT m etamo rphism.Steeply dipping ma jor faul ts separate blueschists from the In ner Po ntide sequence, w hichconsists of a Permian-Triassic metam orphic basement o verlain by carbona tes and U pperCretaceous f lysch. Especial ly in the Ankara region, Upper Cretaceous f lysch containsabun dant ophiol i t ic ol is tol i ths. Post-orogenic Palaeocene sedim ents are t ransgressiveover the H P/L T me tamo rphic bel t and the peridot i te nappe. The blueschist sequence mayhave been the north-facing An atol ide/T auride platform margin, subducted during theLate Cretaceous. Very fast upl if t in the col l is ion zone, aided by buo yancy of subductedcontine ntal crust , generated ol is tostromes in the P ontides and em placed peridot i te nappesover the Anato l ide /Taur ide p la t form.
