    COURSE OBJECTIVESYou will be introduced to Standard Spanish, the language shared throughout the Spanish-speaking world.Each country and region (including Southern California!) has its own language specifics. The purpose of

    this course is to introduce you to basic vocabulary and languages structures that can be used by all

    Spanish speakers.

    METHODOLOGY- We are using an integrated method (on-line workbook, computer programs, DVDs) with a

    strong emphasis on communicative skills.

    - The focus of all activities is to develop all language skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, andWriting.

    - Cultural concepts are introduced throughout all activities with authentic materials.- Lab time (on line workbook, computer interactive, Internet research)- Individual, pair, and group activities- DVDs- Tests- Oral presentations

    REQUIREMENTS and CLASS DETAILS

    CLASS MATERIALSPURCHASE AND BRING your TEXTBOOKtoclass every meeting.

    The required text is SOL y VIENTO Volume 1 (by Bill Van Patten, McGraw-Hill; Second Edition).

    The bookstore sells it as a complete package including the registration card for the online

    Workbook/CENTRO(your instructorwill let you know how to proceed to register

    The textbook has been placed on reserve at the RCC Norco Library. Both the book and theworkbook are required for this class.

    Xeroxing or otherwise duplicating them is a violation of the U.S. Copyright Act of 1976 and is

    prosecutable under federal law. This act provides for the assessment of civil and/or criminal penalties

    for copyright infringement.

    ATTENDANCE

    All students are expected to be present and on time for the whole duration of the class and Lab (noleaving early).

    LATE or LEAVE-EARLY students will not receive Participation credit for that day. Any student who does not show up the first day of class, ceases to attend, and then comes back

    without communicating with the instructor, accumulates 3 or more consecutive attendance

    deficiencies (absence, tardiness, leave-early), MAY BE DROPPED by the instructor.

    CLASS PARTICIPATIONIn order to develop language skills, you must participate actively in class: listen, take notes, participate in

    pair or group work, ask and answer questions, get to work promptly and concentrate on what you are

    doing. However important a good classroom atmosphere might be, class is not intended for social and

    chatting time.

    TESTS, QUIZZES, and FINAL EXAMThere will be NO MAKE-UP for tests, quizzes or final exam*.Chapter Tests and DVD quizzes last from 15 to 30 minutes and the final exam two hours and 30 minutes.

    Do not ask for extra time when taking an exam, and use all the time you are given (unless youare allowed special accommodations through DSPS).

    Any test not taken will receive the grade of 0.

    *Although make-up tests are not allowed, you may, in case of a planned absence, documented

    medical or family emergency, take your test early or right upon returning to class. Please make

    arrangements with instructor. A MAXIMUM OF TWO QUIZZES CAN BE MADE UP

    THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER.

    HOMEWORK ON-LINE / CENTRO (www.mhcentro.com) :Your homework consists of completing the assigned activities in your online Workbook. Homework may

    be done wherever you get internet access, at home, on campus at the library or the CIS Lab. You are

    required to complete all assigned sections of the online workbook. Each section is graded automatically,

    except for written (marked by a red dot) activities which are graded by your instructor. Spanish

    punctuation and accents are used and checked for all written assignments. Assignments are due on the

    dates indicated on your Course Calendar. Please see the last page of this syllabus for Homework deadlines.

    Homework submitted past the deadline will receive a 0.

    LAB TIME:

    Attendance to the lab is a requirement fora total of 18 hours in per semester. Lab time is included inyour class time for 70 minutes per week.

    Lab work related to the topic covered in class and is accessed via the Custom Lab you have purchasedalong with your textbook.

    You will receive half credit for doing your assigned work in the lab. You will receive complete credit for bring in a printout of your completed lab activities It isstrictly forbidden to use Internet connection for your own needs or entertainment while

    working in the Lab: failure to do so will result of student being dropped.

    TUTORING:Please contact the TUTORIAL SERVICES (951- 372- 7143) as soon as you feel that help and reviewing

    are needed. You may set up weekly appointments or see a tutor only as the need comes up. For each hour

    that you work with a tutor, you will receive .25 POINTS that will count toward you FINAL exam.

    CHEATING: Cheating in any form is not permitted may result in your dismissal with the grade of F.

    Copying on line exercises or homework from classmates is also considered cheating.

    CLASSROOM RULES:

    NO CELL PHONES!!! (no checking, reading, writing text messages, no checking voicemailduring lectures or lab). ALL CELL PHONES MUST BE OFF FOR THE WHOLE

    DURATION OF THE CLASS AND LAB. If you need to be reached for family emergency, you

    may ask to be allowed to use your phone while in class.

    Disregard of the above listed rules may require disciplinary action (see student manual)STUDY TIPS:Although this class is level 1 in the Spanish languages series, it is a 5 unit class. It is advised that you

    dedicate about 3 hours of study a week per unit, or a total of 15 hours for this class. Here are some

    study tips. More realistically, twenty to forty minutes per day is ideal to develop and maintain

    acquisition. Frequency of practice is more beneficial the long study sessions before tests only.

    Communicate your difficulties to your instructor Review your notes and vocabulary daily, even if you only have a short time to read through

    them.

    Make a copy of the vocabulary pages and have if available daily for quick review. Carry youryellow handouts with you and read them throughout the week. Any new vocabulary area seen in class, such as dates, time, foods, family relationships, etc, must

    become a part of your daily life when you incorporate what you learn in Spanish into yourhome, work, and social life.

    You may only repeat a class for credit if you got a D or lower in the previous one. You may Audit a

    course regardless of the grade you got in it previously.

    GRADING CATEGORIES and Percentages

    Class Participation = 5 %For each class meeting you attend (on-time, not leaving early) you will receive ONE POINT. If you

    arrive after the first five minutes of class, you will be marked absent. If you leave early, you will bemarked absent. Please speak with your instructor regarding long absences and / or unavoidable

    tardiness (especially if you know about it ahead of time).
