SAN FRANCISCO DONS BASKETBALL - PAGE 2

HEAD COACH REX WALTERS A new era began April 7, 2008 when the University of San Francisco named Rex Walters head coach of the men’s basketball program. The former Kan-sas star and NBA veteran hit the ground running and entering his second season on the Hilltop, all but one player on the 2009-10 roster was signed by Walters and his coaching staff. San Francisco has added talented size and versatile perimeter players who look pre-pared to follow Walters’ mantra: Play hard. Play smart. Play together. Coach Walters came to USF from Florida Atlantic University. In his fi rst season at the helm, Walters guided Florida Atlantic to its second consecutive winning season the fi rst time the Owls had done so since posting three straight from 1990-92. In 2006-07, the Owls won 10 Sun Belt Conference games, the third-most for a fi rst-year Sun Belt member. The team also set a program scoring record, averaging 74.9 points per game. Prior to Florida Atlantic, Walters’ fi rst collegiate coaching job came at Valparai-so, a two-year stint as an assistant under Homer Drew. The 2003-04 Hornets were 18-13 overall and advanced to the NCAA Tournament after capturing the Mid-Conti-nent Conference with a record of 11-5. Walters’ coaching pedigree began as a player, receiving tutelage from some of the game’s legendary coaches. Roy Wil-liams at the University of Kansas and the NBA’s Chuck Daly, Larry Brown and Pat Riley all mentored Walters as a player. Walters starred for two seasons at Kansas and in 68 starts under Williams, averaged 15.6 points per game, leading the Jayhawks in scoring during both his ju-nior and senior campaigns. KU combined to go 56-12 overall, won back-to-back Big Eight titles, capped by a trip to the 1993 Final Four. A two-time All-Big Eight team pick, Walters was the 1993 Big Eight Male Athlete of the Year. After graduating from Kansas in 1993 with a B.S. in education, Walters was selected by New Jersey as the 16th overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft. He went on to play seven seasons in total with the Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat, aver-aging 4.6 points and 1.7 assists per game. Walters and his wife, Deanna, have fi ve children: Addison (13), Drew (11), Riley (8), Gunner (6), and welcomed Ace Jordan in July of 2008.

DIOR LOWHORN - 2009-10 MID-MAJOR ALL-AMERICAN: Senior forward Dior Lowhorn was named to the 2009-10 Mid-Major Preseason All-America Team as announced by CollegeInsider.com. Lowhorn followed up a sensational sophomore season with a strong second season in the Green and Gold in 2008-09. Lowhorn led the West Coast Conference in scoring for the second consecutive season and captured the league scoring title in overall (20.1) and league games (19.1) for the second consecutive year. Lowhorn is the fi rst player to lead the league in scoring in back-to-back seasons since Gonzaga’s Jeff Brown did so from 1993-94. For his efforts, Lowhorn captured All-WCC First Team honors for the second time. The Texas Tech transfer and Bay Area native turned in a prolifi c sophomore campaign, leading the league in overall (20.5) and WCC (20.5) scoring - the fi rst USF player to pace the league in scoring in both categories since John Cox accomplished the feat in 2004-05 (20.0/19.9). Lowhorn’s sophomore tally of 636 points was good for fourth place on the Dons single-season scoring charts and his 604 as a junior ranked 10th. A 2008 Mid-Major All-American Lowhorn has posted at least 20 points in 45 career games, including a career-high 32 against Pepperdine (3/6/09). Lowhorn owns 10 career double-doubles.

DIOR LOWHORN AMONG NATIONAL SCORING LEADERS: In his fi rst two seasons on the Hilltop, senior forward Dior Lowhorn cracked the top-30 Division I scoring list. The San Franciscan enters the 2010 West Coast Conference schedule ranked No. 44 (18.9 ppg). Lowhorn ended his junior campaign ranked No. 23 among Division I leaders (20.1) and was No. 27 following his sophomore season (20.5).

LOWHORN SURPASSES 1,700 COMBINED CAREER POINTS: With a 23-point night at USC (12/1/08) senior forward Dior Lowhorn surpassed 1,000 combined career points and enters Friday’s game against Saint Mary’s with 1,734 points with 1,504 coming at USF and 230 at Texas Tech.

LOWHORN CRACKS SINGLE-SEASON SCORING LIST... AGAIN: With a career-high 32-point outburst against Pepperdine (3/6/09) in the fi rst round of the 2009 West Coast Conference Tournament senior forward Dior Lowhorn completed his junior year with 604 points, good for 10th place on the USF single-season scoring list. Lowhorn ranked fourth in single-season history with 636 points (31 games) as a sophomore and became just the third player in school history to score 600 or more points twice in a career. USF All-Americans Quintin Dailey (755, 1982; 693, 1981) and Bill Cartwright (710, 1979; 600, 1977) were the fi rst to accomplish the feat.

SAN FRANCISCO PARTICIPATES IN THE 2009-10JESUIT BASKETBALL SPOTLIGHT:USF is proud of its rich Jesuit heritage and the Dons will compete in no fewer than seven games against fellow Jesuit schools during the 2009-10 season. San Francisco squares off against Loyola University Chicago Saturday, December 12 in a rematch of the 1949 NIT Championship game. “We’re thrilled to enter into this agreement with our outstanding media partners from Comcast and Cox,” West Coast Confer-ence Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich said. “This is an exciting time to be a part of West Coast Conference basketball. Not only are we coming off one of the best years in conference history with four teams qualifying for the postseason, we now have one of the top television agreements in the country thanks to our partnerships with Comcast, Cox, ESPN and Fox.”

“Comcast SportsNet is delighted to unite with the West Coast Conference in this regional package,” said CSNCA Execu-tive Producer Richard Zinn. “The teams have some exceptional talent and we look forward to bringing many exciting rivalries to our viewers.”

Each of the 12 games will be broadcast live in the markets of the two participating teams, and includes fi ve of the top 55 mar-kets in the nation in the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, Portland, Seattle and San Diego. The 12-game schedule will be-

WAR MEMORIAL GETS A FACELIFT

During the Summer, USF Athletics honors a remarkable past and pre-pares for the next generation with a major renovation in War Memori-al Gym. Among a number of improve-ments was the fi rst fl oor replacement done since the arena opened in 1958-59. Along with the new hardwood fl oor-ing, the gym is sporting a fresh court design and a new coat of paint from fl oor to ceiling. The wooden bleachers on the ends of the court were replaced, and new lights were installed.

Upon entering War Memorial Gym, fans will notice a number of other changes, starting with new entranc-es with to the arena, new retired jer-seys hanging above the court, as well as new NCAA and conference champi-onship banners, celebrating the legacy and tradition of USF’s basketball and volleyball programs.

The south lobby of the gym underwent construction as well to create a more permanent concessions area.
