    Introduction

The growing demand for high class 'front end' mic pre-amplifiers has led to the design of the newNeve 88R Remote Microphone Rack providing remote control of classic Neve microphoneamplifiers. The rack interfaces directly with AMS Neve's EncoreAutomation Computer and 88Rconsole surface, giving engineers total control over the mic amplifiers from the console.

Two types of modules are currently available, the 'Air Monserrat' mic amp taken from the late 70's,identified by the blue knob and the classic 1081 from the early 70's identified by the maroon knob.

The modules provide transformer balanced XLR Mic inputs to balanced line outputs via a multiwayVaricon connector on the rear of the rack.

Twelve modules of any combination can be fitted into the 4U intelligent rack housing. Each rackalso requires a control processor.

    Connector Information

Rear connectors are a 56 way Varicon connector for line outs and a pair of 9 pin d-type connectorsfor RS485 and a fused mains IEC socket.

On the front is a standard 3 pin female XLR mic input per module.

The modules can be controlled locally (front panel) or remotely.

The control software will interrogate the racks and allow the user to specify modules to be controlledeither locally OR from the control software/console.

By default all modules power up with all functions locally controllable. Settings are retained onpower down.

    RS485 Input/Output Connector

The Encore unit has a RS485 interface port built into the E for V card. The port will be used inmultidrop mode with rack addressing facilitated by dip switches on each rack controller board.

The Encore to Mic rack cable will be wired with a 9 pin D-type female at the Encore end and a 9 pinD-type male at the Mic Rack end.

Encore to Mic rack cable pin-outs:

    Comms Extension Cables

The Mic rack RS485 Input and Output connectors are wired in parallel with the exception of theground.

The Input connector is a 9 pin D-type female while the Output connector is a 9 pin D-type male. This is to allow the connectors to be joined together in the event of a rack needing to be removedfrom the 'daisy-chain'.

The ground pin on the Input connector is not a direct connection to ground to prevent groundloops.

Care should also be taken when selecting which cable is to be used for communications, especiallyfor long (20m+) runs as marginal cable can cause intermittent problems which can prove difficult

    to troubleshoot.

The RS-422 specification recommends 24AWG twisted pair with a shunt capacitance of 16pF perfoot and a 100 ohm characteristic impedance.

It can be difficult to determine whether shielding is required until problems arise, so we recommendusing shielded cable. A good choice is Ethernet cable, commonly called Category 5 cable. This is

The racks can be "daisy chained" to provide up to 192 remote controllable Mic amps. This is

achieved using a maximum of 16 racks daisy chained, each with the full 12 module slotspopulated.

The terminator is a 120 resistor across pins 1 & 6 of a 9 pin female D-type, and is supplied readybuilt with a Remote Mic Rack system.

    Module Controls

Front panel control of the mic amplifiers allows the amplifiers to be set up from the studio floor andalso allows a method of control if for any reason the Encore system should fail. The rack willnormally power up in this mode until Encore assigns the module to a channel strip and will alsorevert to this mode if the serial control from Encore is lost.

Front panel control is available if the 48V, pad and phase control switch LEDs are green. If the LEDsare red, the mic amp is under channel strip control and not controllable from the front panel.

Turning the switched gain control will vary the gain as shown in the display beneath, but the gain isnot related to the actual position of the knob, which is of the infinitely rotatable kind. The range ofcontrol is from +20 to +70dB in 5dB steps.

Next to the gain control are two LEDs that indicate signal presence (at approximately -30dBu orgreater) and signal overload (at 2dB below clipping). Note that an overload in the remote micamplifier is not shown on the console channel module directly. For best performance, the line inputtrim on the channel module should be set to zero. This will ensure that the channel module

overload LED will come on at the same time as the mic amplifier overload indicator. If the input trimon the channel module is turned down, there is a danger that the mic amplifier will overload withoutan overload being indicated on the channel module.

The display will indicate gain when control of the module is from the front panel. If control is from achannel strip, the display will show which channel. The gain can be checked (interrogated) whencontrol is from the channel strip by pressing the INT button, but the gain cannot be altered locally.

The 48V, phase and -20 switches control the phantom power, phase and pad functions

respectively. The DIR button is a relay bypass that connects the front panel XLR directly to the rearpanel Varicon and hence to the console patch without going through the remote mic amp's audioelectronics. This allows the mic to be used even if there is a complete failure of the remote rack.

The Line In option available on both types of module uses the DIR button to switch from transformerbalanced microphone input to electronically balanced Line Input.

Control is either from the module front panel, or from a channel strip, but not from bothsimultaneously. This is to prevent the module from having different settings to those set on thechannel strip. If the module is not assigned to a channel module, it can still be controlled fromthe Encore screen at the same time as from the front panel and the Encore screen will reflectchanges made at the front panel.

    Encore Control

The AMS Neve mic amp control software can be launched either from the SYSTEM menu within theEncore automation program, or directly from the START PROGRAMS function of Windows.

The control program automatically detects the presence of connected mic amp racks and willdisplay the number, type and position of all detected modules within the selected rack.

The icons at the bottom of the screen indicate how many remote racks are connected and the rackindicated by the red outline is the one currently being controlled from the upper part of the screen.

The remote mic amplifiers can be individually assigned to 88R channel strips for control using thechannel selector, or they can be controlled directly from the screen (but not both together).Whatever the control method, the screen shows the current settings.

The mic amp settings can be saved and recalled independently of the console's recall system usingthe save and load buttons that launch conventional Windows dialogues.

    Channel Strip Control

After Encore has assigned a remote mic amp module to a channel strip, the channel strip controlscan be used to control the remote mic amp. Make sure that the mic amp output is patched to thechannel line input that Encore has assigned the remote mic module to and that the channel isswitched to line input (e.g. that the C/O switch is on when the console status is in record mode). Toensure that the overload indicators on the channel correspond to the overload point of the remotemic amplifiers, set the line input trim on the channel strip to zero.

The mic gain control on the channel module is continuous when controlling the internal micamplifier, but will cause the remote mic amplifier gain to change in steps of 5dB (as indicated on theEncore screen and remote mic amp module).

The remote mic amp gain control may use the same value from the channel strip gain control thatEncore's recall system uses, so Encore's recall system will always restore the mic amp gain to thecorrect value, regardless of gain control component variations.

The pad and phantom power switches on the channel strip will control these functions on the

remote mic amplifier, but the phase switch will not control the phase of the remote mic amplifier. This is because a phase reversal in the remote mic amplifier would cancel out the simultaneouslyselected phase reversal on the line input of the channel module. To set the remote phase reversalinstead of the channel strip phase reversal use the button on the Encore screen.

    Software Set-Up

The mic amp control software needs to be integrated into the Encore suite with a once-only set-upprocedure normally done at the factory or when commissioning the console. This is done byrunning the mic amp control software MIC.EXE (which needs to be located in the C:\Encoredirectory), clicking on the SETUP button, setting the Integrate with Encore check box and clicking theOK button. This will require a program restart to complete.

Also from the setup page, the comms port that the serial cable is plugged into can be set. This isnormally COM2 as the mouse is on COM1. If set to the wrong port, the software will probably failto find the RS485 adaptor (dongle) and will report an error.

The link to each rack can be tested with the test buttons, which simply cause the yellow commsindicator on the front panel of the remote rack processor module to flash off briefly. This is useful forchecking that each rack has been set to its own unique address - i.e. that only one rack's LEDflashes.
