GOSPEL MEDITATION
December 31, 2017 The Holy Family "When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned ... to their own town of Nazareth." Mary and Joseph were faithful Jews who followed the norms of their religion. Today's Gospel describes the event we call "The Presentation." Jesus' parents, like every Jewish family, presented their infant son to the Lord in a formal ceremony at the temple in Jerusalem. Having done what their religious rites required (and having heard the prophetic words of Sime-on and Anna), Mary and Joseph returned home. It was back in their native region of Galilee, amidst the daily routine of domestic life, that Jesus "grew and became strong, filled with wisdom." As Christians, we too consecrate our children to the Lord when we have them baptized in the Church. Seeing our chil-dren receive this sacrament of initiation is always a moment of great joy and hope as we anticipate the life that lies ahead for them, both on earth and in eternity. But the baptism of a baby is only the beginning of this journey towards heaven. In truth, the little daily details, the simple living of family life in our own home paves the way for our children to reach their eternal home. And so it was with the Holy Family. Jesus' childhood, his for-mation and development took place not primarily amidst the public drama of the temple, but in the quiet privacy of his home. How important this home was, where his parents raised him in their faith and helped him live in such a way that "the favor of God was upon him." May we too, in our homes and our families, remember that although our mission may be lived out in very small moments, taken together they have an eternal significance.
Yours in Christ, Fr. Brian Catholic Schools Office Tuition Policy
For parents registering their children for the 2018-2019 school year, please note; In order to receive the school’s re-duced Catholic Tuition Rate, your pastor must determine whether your family meets the criteria set by your parish for REGISTERED, ACTIVE, PARTICIPATING members.
The definition of registered, active, and participating varies by parish, but usually includes attending Mass regularly as well as contributing with an envelope to the offertory along with supporting the ministry life of the parish. If you have ques-tions about your family’s status, please contact your pastor directly. (Note: All Diocesan high school students receiving the reduced tuition rate for the coming year must have their status verified by their home pastor before they can be regis-tered as a Catholic).

Society of Saint Vincent de Paul Collection for Funds & Toiletries-
December 30 & 31, 2017
The 2nd collection at all Masses the 5th weekend of the month will support the efforts of the SVdP Conference here at St. Bernard’s. The money you give supports people primarily living in our parish boundaries who are struggling to pay rent, buy groceries and gas, and pay for utility bills.
Also, on the last weekend there will be receptacles in the Church for the collection of personal-sized toiletry items for the homeless. The SVdP facilities in Phoenix, which provide showers and barber services, are in constant shortage of such items. Needed personal or travel-sized items include: soap, shaving cream, disposable razors, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, and toothbrushes.
We appreciate all your support for the works of the SVdP Conference here at St. Bernard’s.
Your contributions help us help others.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING
Thank you to all who have updated their training!
All volunteers are required to take Safe Environment training every year or every
other year depending on the ministry you serve in. The year runs from July 1st
through June 30th. If you are a volunteer and have not taken the Foundation Course,
“Protecting God’s Children” you need to go online to
www.safeenvironmenttraining.org website and register for a foundation class.
If you have had the foundation course you may update each year online or in person.
Just go to the same website and click on MY OBLIGATIONS and follow the directions.
You will view a short video; make sure you watch all the way through the credits,
until it tells you that you have completed the training. If you choose to take in person
click on “register for classes” and find a parish giving the renewal video, “Keeping
the Promise Alive 2017”. If you have any difficulties please do not hesitate to call
Kathie at the Parish Office, 480-661-9843 ex 309. We need to have compliance by
the end of this year for 2017. Thanks for helping us keep our Faith Environment a
Safe Environment for all and thank you for your continued service in the Church.
The catechists and I wish all of our Faith Formation families a joyous New Year! Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and are enjoying the Winter Break! Faith Formation classes will resume the week of January 8th. All Catho-lic School children joining us for sacrament preparation, First Reconcili-ation and First Communion/Confirmation must be registered by January 8th. The fee is $35.00 per student and you may register in the Parish Office. Sacrament classes (Second, Third and Heritage) are closed until next fall. All other grade level classes remain open all year. Easter is early this year, so it is very important that all children receiving sacraments are here every week as we have less class time to prepare for reception of First Reconciliation, Confirmation and Eucharist. First Reconciliation for all second graders will be Saturday, March 24, 2018 @ 10:00am. Confirmation and First Communion will be celebrated at 2:00pm on Sunday, April 8, 2018. As always, if you have any questions, comments or concerns about Elementary Faith Formation, Sacrament Preparation (Elementary, Mid-dle or High School) or Adult Confirmation or you would like to be a cate-chist for Faith Formation, please contact me at [email protected] or call me at the Parish Office, 480-661-9843, Ext.309.
God’s Blessings,

Dear Fr. Brian and St. Bernard of Clairvaux Parishioners,
I want to thank you so much for the opportunity for a baby bottle drive to be conducted on behalf of Aid to Women Center at our Parish. You are blessed with a very generous parish. The baby bottle drive has raised $12,847.29 for Aid to Women Center!
Baby bottle drives are one of our biggest fundraisers. With these funds, we are belter able to serve those who are seeking an abortion, those confused on what to do about their crisis pregnancy, and those who have no place to go for prenatal care. One such young lady came to us wanting to abort her baby. She was in college and the father of the baby was pressuring her to have an abortion. This young woman is Catholic, attended Catholic schools and even attended the March for Life in DC. After a pregnancy test, an ultrasound, counseling and re-source referrals, the couple made a decision for life!
As a pro-life pregnancy center, we want to be able to support mothers to make a decision to carry their babies to term, continue to support her throughout the pregnancy and after giving birth. All of this is possible due to the generosity of our parishioners.
Your parish conducted an excellent baby bottle drive and we are forev-er grateful for your support. May God continue to bless you and your parish. In Gratitude
