Q.1. Read the following passage carefully : 10TWICE BLESSED BRIDE

In the days preceding my daughters wedding, the house was upside downwith great excitement and confusion. We used to sit discussing for long hour thevarious details to be fixed.

We just had a month for shopping and organizing everything. Our daughtergave us all a real difficult time deciding about the wedding dress. At one moment she

would choose a dress and the next instance she would set her eyes on another.Though the agony of indecision occasioned by the momentous event in her life wasunderstandable, I was beginning to lose my patience and must have shown it too. After one week of hectic, futile shopping, I lay down thinking of my mother and thepreparations for my own wedding. Her pleasantly shining face was there before myeyes. I wished she was there to guide and comfort me then and to bless hergranddaughter, who was entering a new phase of life after marriage.

I remember how easily mother would create a very pleasant situationwhenever she found any of her children looking sad or worried. Her moral supportcould always wipe the tears and bring smiles to our faces. For us she was a pillar ofstrength that we could lean upon in times of distress. Remembering those old days I

took out my suitcase to gaze at my wedding sarees that had not been worn and werestill intact. Being an army officers wife. I would never think of dressing up in thoseheavy sarees, which my husband frowned upon.

While showing it to my daughter amidst recollection of my own days. Wefound tucked inside the layers a lovely chiffon saree, full of beautiful golden zariwork. I remembered how my mother had fallen for that, the moment it was shown toher. She at once bought it for me ignoring my protest that it was too bright and heavyfor my sober taste.

Suddenly, with a lighting touch, I took it out and gave it to my daughter. Sheadmired it as lovingly as my mother had done. On an impulse I told her it was a gift toher from her maternal grandmother. I could see my mother come alive with a smile on

her face, making me feel it was what she had wanted. It was as though through thesaree, mother was blessing her granddaughter. I felt wonderful. My daughter looked at the saree and then at my face. She was surprised to see me

look so joyous and excited like a young girl. It was a great moment, a truly blessedone! I cherish it lovingly.

Whenever I miss my daughter, I try to relive that beautiful moment whichcomforted me in my hour of need. For decked up in that saree, as my girl came for her wedding, I saw myself as thebride once again, and there was mother showering her benedictions on two

generations. (Shashi Dutt, adapted)A Answer the following questions briefly:

Q.2. Read the following passage : 5Chimps can use sign language to talk to their trainers. Monkeys can learn to

count. A crow can figure out how to use a stick to get at that hard-to-reach grub.Chicken can learn to play checkers. Even worms can be taught to run mazes. So whichanimal is the smartest? Youre probably thinking that chimps are smarter thanchickens. And that crows are smarter that worms. And youre smarter than all ofthem. But where do these rankings come from? Okay, you probably are smarter than the

average worm. But why do we assume that bigger beasts are smarter than smallerones? Or that furry critters are brainier than slithering wrigglers that are coated inslime ?

And how come we think dogs are so smart ? Sure, a dog might be cleverenough to fetch his leash when he wants to go out. But the same mutt might also barkat the vacuum cleaner and spend a whole hour chasing his own tail. Is Rover anybrighter than a hamster, a chicken or that kid whos always eating Play Doh ? Howcan you measure an animals brain power?

The hardest part is coming up with the right test. A dog cant sit down with ano : 2 pencil and take a multiple choice exam. So the test has to be something the dog

can learn to do: select a block by nudging it with a nose or a paw for example. The testalso has to be something the dog wants to do: a dog might stare at that block all theday, without budging - until she figures out that theres a treat underneath.
