CARNEY, Martin F.MAJ - 4 December 1956 - 15 October 1957

Department of the Army determined in May 1957 that Congress had provided funds for only 400,000 National Guardsmen rather than the 425,000 troops that were authorized in the 1957

Army National Guard strength ceiling. The result was the consolidation and inactivation of many National Guard units across the country. The State of New York was required to consolidate and inactivate units of the 42nd Infantry Division and other commands within the state. (Annual Report of the Chief of Staff to the Governor, 1957, P. 27) Effective 15 October 1957, the Chief, National Guard Bureau relieved the 106th Infantry Regiment from assignment to the 42nd Infantry Division and assigned the 106th Infantry Regiment to the 106th Regimental Combat Team. The 106th Regimental Combat team was organized with 3 units:14
