VIANA STATION HUB

REGISTRATIONS

LARGE OPEN SPACE NEXT TO VIANA TRAIN STATION. BECOMES FLOODED DURING HEAVY RAIN.

VIANA STATION MARKET LOGIC TRAFFIC FLOODING

“The market has existed probably for 20 years, and it is difficult to just leave this marketplace when we do not have any other place to turn to. This is the best location for a market as there is such a large circulation of people and concentration of transport networks.”Iana, market vendor.

BRIDGING

Placing public programmes in the crossing structure will at-tract and give people a reason to use the bridge in favour of crossing on ground level (which is a quicker option).

The public space added to the crossing bridge in the form of open flexible rooms will give room for the existing mar-ket, allowing it to claim it’s space in the hub of traffic.

The new structure will bridge the physical divide between the two sides of Viana. It provides pedestrian infrastructure, and creates an active civic space.

TRAFFIC REGISTRATION

30 minutes at Viana station, counting the volumes of traffic.

Chapa traffic counts for about half or one third compared to the private car’s traffic. Most cars features only one or two persons, while the chapas can take until 14 persons. Counting people on the road, most people in this area use

chapa as their transportation.

The Butterfly Effect

“The butterfly effect is a metaphor that encapsulates the concept of sensitive dependence on initial conditions in chaos theory; namely, a small change at one place in a complex system can have large effects elsewhere. Although this may appear to be an esoteric and unusual behavior, it is exhibited by very simple systems: for example, a ball placed at the crest of a hill might roll into any of several valleys depending on slight differences in initial position. The butterfly effect is a common trope in fiction when presenting scenarios involving time travel and with “what if ” cases where one storyline diverges at the moment of a seemingly minor event resulting in two significantly different outcomes.”

Viana is divided physically by the railway and the highway. A crossing bridge has been set up for pedes-trians, but is not widely used. With people crossing the highly trafficated highway, the situation is critical in terms of safety concerns.

TranspirationLoss of water from the leaf surface to the atmosphere.

Humidity catcherHumid air from the atmosphere is catched in net made of nylon mesh. The transpiration from the plants add extra humidity to the air.

AbsorptionLight energy and Carbon Dioxide is absorbed by the leaf.

Xylem vesselAre found just below the bark and transport water and nutrients up the plant or tree.

Drip irrigationLocally produced clay pots let a controlled amount of water drip through to the plants, and are extremely water efficient.

PercepationRainfall is absorbed in the earth and and absorbed by the roots of the plant or tree.

URBAN FOG FARMINGBy facilitating a densification in height above existing settlements, open areas can be utilized for urban fog farming, as assuring basic substenance.

Humidity cathers are here combined with vegetation, which because of its transpiration will add ekstra humidity to the nets.

The farming is based on drip-irrigation with the use of local ceramic pots that let a constant and mini-mum of water to drip through to the plants.

The drip-irrigation allows for an efficiently low water-consumption, and is a cheap method that can be run manually by local initiatives.
