GM / PACE Human Machine Interface (HMI) Interaction Project
• Global PACE Design Institutions to participate in designing a HMI concept for a small luxury vehicle that will alter the image of Cadillac for the year 2013. Concepts will focus on total user and vehicle experience.
Team may include the following disciplines: (Product designer, Visualization designer, Graphic designer, Ergonomist, Engineer)
Participants would be responsible for: Human Machine Interface (HMI) research Brand/Product/Customer research Advanced technology research Persona development Sketches Vehicle Environment
• Project timeline: November 2008 – April 2009– Minimum 5 interfaces with GM Management Team

Maximum 2 teams per school
Timeline: HMI project kickoff Nov 6, 2008 3:30pm-4:30pm
GM Steering Team available twice per month Nov.-Apr
Final Concept Reviews April 16th & April 23rd 2009

Human Machine Interface (HMI) Definition User interaction with all points of contact, physical or cognitive,
inside and outside a vehicle Understanding of information management Combination of visual and physical controls Full sensory experience
Research and Persona Development Identify target customers Understand user behaviors and goals Develop (3) “personas” around common goals and behaviors Create “day in the life” case study of your selected personas that
describes typical interfaces and scenarios
Develop a HMI concept based on the personas you have researched Demonstrate how your concept meets user goals

Event #1 - Research Review Deliverables
• Customer Profile– Identify your three “personas”– Sociographic background– A “day in the life” scenarios
• Identify key behaviors and user needs
• Benchmarking• Automotive Trends• Consumer Electronic Trends• You Tube User Interface
• Brand Research– Mood board generation– Identify trends within the boards
Event #2 – Concept Proposal Deliverables
• Visual Concepts – Big Picture– Show display and control ideas– Identify key components
• E.g. key fob, cluster, center stack and shifter– Identify key information to be displayed based on vehicle
concept
• Use case scenarios – Identify typical interactive scenarios
• Common interactions across different modes
Event #3 – 1st Check-In Review Deliverables
• Three Concepts– 2D format
• Linked to mood boards• Visual style established for each of the three concepts
– Simple animations that expand upon 2D graphics
• GM Team direction provided to student(s) for final single theme
Event #4A – 2nd Check-in Review Deliverables
• Refined execution of single theme– 2D presentation that establishes graphic style– Storyboards that describe animation for final presentation– Several small animations to illustrate some critical concepts
• GM leadership to confirm direction for final presentation
(GM to present examples of work for Event #5)
Event #4B – 3rd Check-in Review Deliverables (if needed)
• A third check-in review will be available if institutions feel the need to meet with Design Center Steering Team again.
