How can skip counting by tens help to count objects
in a set ?
Lesson OpenerMaking ConnectionsInvite children to tell you what they know about skip counting.
How is skip counting different from counting by ones? (Possible answer: Every number is counted when counting by ones. Only some numbers are counted when skip counting.)
Using the Digital LessonEncourage children to model the problem in the lesson by making 6 connecting cube trains, each train 10 cubes long. Relate the number of cubes in each train to the number of flowers in each flowerpot.
Learning TaskDirect children’s attention to the groups of flowers.
• How many groups of flowers are there? (6)
• How many flowers are in each group? (10)
• How can you find the number of flowers in all? (Possible answer: Count the flowers one by one.)
• What is an easier way in which Avery can count the number of flowers? (Possible answer: skip count)
Literacy and Mathematics Choose one or more of the following activities.
• Invite children to draw pictures that show skip counting by tens. Offer suggestions such as pictures of dimes or filled ten frames. Encourage them to write below the pictures the number of groups and the number of items in each group.
• Have children write a story about a group of children who each have ten stars on a class chart.

How many crayons would there be in 12 groups of 10 crayons?
Read the following questions aloud.
• How many crayons in each group? 10
• What number comes first when skip counting by tens? 10
• How many groups of ten are there? 12
• How many crayons are there? 120
Strategy: Model ConceptsMaterials: paper, colored pencils
• Have children imagine that they are having a party. Explain that each child will bring 10 balloons.
• Have each child draw the 10 balloons they will bring. If there are more than 12 students in the class, divide the class into smaller groups.
• Have the class show their drawings and count the total number of balloons that the class or each group will have for the party by counting by tens. Monitor English learner’s pronunciation and model numbers that they have difficulty saying.

Problem SolvingProblems
These problems require children to use higher order thinking skills and/or multiple steps to solve the problems.
For Exercise 4, children will need to use mental math to skip count by tens to 50. Then have children write or draw to explain their answer. For Exercise 5, children will need to identify two steps to solve the problem.
Go DeeperTo extend thinking, ask children how many pencils Justin would have if he bought 3 more packets.
