The sunshine is bright and it’s making for big smiles on the first day of April. The month of April is recognized as National Volunteer Month. Many of our Kleinburg parents are our volunteers. They continue to give so much of their time and effort to making our school and community the dynamic place it is. While it feels like saying, thank you is not nearly enough, on behalf of the staff and stu- dents at Kleinburg Public School, THANK YOU! Thank you to each and everyone of you, and you know who you are. For taking the time out of your day to read with kids, prepare snacks, shelve books, count money, ensure our parking lot is safe, organize commemorative books, write and organize the newsletter, organize FUNraising events, supervise on field trips, take orders for spirit wear, supervise clubs and teams and list goes on and on. What an incredible community. This month we celebrate you! Since last month, we have a couple of staff changes we want to share. One of caretakers David Roberts was promoted to a Term Lead position at Lake Wilcox Public School. We are sad to see David go, but we wish him well in his new role and we thank him for his contributions to our school. We welcome Miss Childs to Kleinburg in the Grade 1/2 class. She is replacing Mrs. Di Padre while she is off on leave. We wish Mrs. Di Padre a speedy recovery and hope to see her soon. We are thrilled to share the birth of Mr. Thorpe’s second child Oliver Tibor Oatway Thorpe. He was born on March 18th weighing 8 lbs, 5ozs. Oliver shares a birthday with his mom - what a wonderful gift! Our warmest congratulations go out to the Thorpe family. This month KPS will kick-off our annual Jump Rope for Heart and the Hoops for Heart events in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Our kick off event is on April 9th where students will be called to an assembly to learn more about the program. This is a great opportunity for our students to be active while having fun and effecting social change. The event for all students takes place on April 23rd. On April 9th students and staff are invited to show their support for the International Day of Pink. On this day people around the world stand up together against bullying, discrimination, homophobia and tran- sphobia. Our next School Council Meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday, April 8th at 7 pm in the Library. We hope to see you there. The Principal’s Report will include updates on the scheduled school construction, a new boundary change, a technology update and other items related to our current academic year and planning for next September. We ask you to save the date for this year’s graduations. Our Grade 8 graduation will be held on Monday, June 23rd at 7 pm in the school gym and our SK Graduation will be held on June 24th and June 25th in the afternoon. Also, don’t forget to join us for our annual Earth Week clean up event on Friday, April 25th. More details on page 6. We hope to see you there! Sincerely, Rita Russo & Trish Yeates

The annual You’re the Chef Program was held today, Tuesday, April 2, 2014. As the excitement in the classroom esca‐lated so did the aromas of the various recipes.  Students worked quickly to complete their assigned challenges in an‐ticipation of tasting each of the delectable meals that they had prepared for each other.  Students, staff and parent volunteers had a fantastic time.  Students enjoyed the cooking experience as well as learning the importance of mak‐ing healthy food choices as outlined in the Canada’s Food Guide. Many thanks to our parent volunteers and a special thank you to Elaine Florio who organized this year’s event.

Reducing the garbage at school has been a long‐time goal for us at KPS. We need your help to continue our work in this area. One way to help reduce the amount of garbage we collect is by using reusable containers. Pack lunches and snacks in containers with snap lids and they can be used over and over again. While we know plastic water bottles are quick and easy, consider the environment and fill a reusable water bottle instead. Our kids really care about the environment. Show them your support by helping out with lunches and snacks.

KPS Students Sing and Dance with Act One Productions

KPS has been a strong supporter of Maple’s Closet, a program initiated by a local high school and strongly supported by our Chair and Trustee Anna De Bartolo. The program aims to ensure all students have appropriate attire for their high school graduation. For the last two years we have collected dresses and suits, this year we are looking for accessories. If you would like to help by donating shoes, evening hand bags, costume jewelry please drop it by the school by April 20th.

It’s Time to Support Maple’s Closet - Bring Accessories

Kindergartens Learn Through Inquiry

10 Tips to Help Your Child With Mathematics from the Ministry of Education

1.  Counting can be fun and entertaining. Sing counting songs such as "One, Two Buckle My Shoe". Your local li‐brarian can recommend fun counting books. Play Hopscotch – it's a counting game! There are lots of games where you count, such as Snakes and Ladders, Dominoes, Crazy Eights and Candyland®.

2.  Computers + math = fun. There are great computer games available for math – ask your librarian or check out your local computer store. Make sure they are "parent approved". There are also super websites that have fun math games, such as TVOKids, or do an Internet search for other sites.

3.  Start Easy and Work Up! Once they have got the hang of counting by 1s, introduce skip counting, such as counting by 2s and 5s.

4.  Use household items for counting practice. Practise adding and subtracting with objects found around your house like spoons or pots and pans. When they've become good at these skills, move on to sim‐ple multiplication.

5.  Tap into your child's curiosity. Go on a number hunt together and discover places where numbers are used such as a clock, TV, computer keyboard, calendar, telephones and license plates.

6.  Use everyday activities. Your child's world is filled with everyday math problems that can be solved. For exam‐ple, "There are four people in our family and we each need a knife and a fork to eat dinner. How many knives and forks do we need to set the table?"

7.  Kitchens can be math zones. Bake some muffins or cookies and ask your child to help you measure out the ingredients. It may be a bit messy but it's fun family time and there's nothing like a fresh cookie as a reward. Have math fridge magnets available so children can start making number patterns and doing simple math problems.

8.  Predict and compare. Start to measure and estimate things like how far it is from the driveway to the house or how long a trip will take and then measure and compare the actual time it takes.

9.  Talk about time. The concept of time can be hard to grasp. Talk to your kids about minutes and hours. Then

get them to try counting days and weeks – for example how many "sleeps" until the weekend or a visit to a friend or relative.

10.  Identify geometric shapes and sizes. Play "I Spy". Instead of looking for words beginning with a letter, look for different colours or shapes and count the number you find in the room.

Kindergarten programs can “capitalize on the children’s natural curiosity and their desire to make sense of the environment.” (Ontario Ministry of Education, 2010‐11, pg. 14). With this in mind we began an inquiry about fish. It started as an inquiry about the salmon eggs that were being hatched in Mr. Wagenaar’s Grade 5 class. The students have asked many questions during this inquiry. Some of these questions include:

I wonder what other animals lay eggs? I wonder why salmon lay lots of eggs? I wonder if other animals eat baby salmon? I wonder why the eggs are pink? I wonder why the salmon eggs like the dark? I wonder why they die after they lay their eggs?

Math Tips for Grade 4 to 8

10 Tips to Help Your Child With Mathematics from the Ministry of Education

 1.  Connect math to daily life. Let your kids know the importance of math in day‐to‐day living. Talk about the ways

you use math in your job and around the house. Show them a tax form or how you pay the bills. Ask them how they used math during the day.

2.  Practise mental math using coins. For example, show that a certain item costs a certain amount and ask what coins are needed to pay for it.

3.  Play games together. Show them math can be fun and exciting. Play family games to add excitement to math activities, like chess or checkers or games in the car such as math bingo or adding licence plate numbers. Lots of board games need math such as Junior Monopoly® or play card games such as Uno®.

4.  Cooking can be counting fun! Get older children involved in helping out at dinner time and let them help meas‐ure ingredients for dishes or estimate the number of potatoes that are needed to feed everyone.

5.  Play the estimating game. Ask your kids to estimate measurements, distances, time and grocery bills. Be sure to compare the estimate with actual. Or get them to guess how much the apples you are going to buy will weigh and then take them to the scale in the grocery store and find out.

6.  Perform time calculations. For example, make up a sentence and ask your child to recite it as many times as possible in 15 seconds. Then ask how many times it could be repeated in 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, etc.

7.  Use common toys to understand math concepts. Build a tower from blocks. Count the blocks. Then talk about the need for a base of the right size and the stability it creates.

8.  Sports and math. There is a lot of math used in sports: batting averages, points per game, save percentages – these are math terms that a sports enthusiast will love. If you watch a game with your child, read the newspa‐per report together sometime the next day and talk about the math concepts.

9.  Computers + math = fun. There are great computer games available for math–ask your librarian or check out your local computer store. Make sure they are "parent approved". There are also super websites that have fun math games, so do an Internet search for sites and bookmark them for future use.

10. Measuring made easy. Estimate and measure the area of different shapes. For example, use small square ob‐jects (plastic tiles, dice, etc.) to estimate then measure how many are needed to fill the area of various flat sur‐faces such as a magazine cover.

Earth Hour at KPS Earth Day Clean Up on April 25th

KPS celebrated Earth Hour on Friday, March

28th by turning out the lights and shutting down computers and personal devices for one hour. During this time we watched out energy con‐sumption come down by 15 kilowatts.  Every little bit helps when you’re an eco‐citizen!

On Friday, April 25th we will continue to be eco‐citizens and par‐ticipate in the Vaughan 20 Minute Makeover. During this time we will clean up the  school yard and the Kleinburg community. Our long winter is finally thawing and there is plenty of garbage to be cleaned up. Join us for our annual community clean up. If you are interested in helping out, you can join us at 1:30 on the back field.

Bring your own gloves and we will provide the bags. We hope to see you there!

Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

On March 27, 2014, The KPS Concert Band participated in the Music Alive competition of York Region.   Under the direction of Mrs. Caldwell, the band received ‘Gold’ for their performance at the Newmarket Theatre.    Congratulations to our Concert Band for their wonderful performance!

We are pleased to announce that YRDSB has installed an Auto‐mated External Defibrillator (AED).  The AED is used to detect life threatening emergencies involving the heart.  It provides step by step instructions to the person attending to the scene of an emergency.    The AED is located just outside the school gym.  It is available to anyone in an emergency situation.  Should you have any ques‐tions or concerns, please contact the school.

KPS Concert Band Wins GOLD!

On April 9th, 2014 KPS will support the International Day against Bullying,  Discrimination, Homophobia, Transphobia in schools and communities.

We are encouraging our student body and staff to wear pink and join in this worthwhile cause.  The first Pink Day was held in Nova Scotia in 2007 when 2 students heard about a male student who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt.  They bought pink T‐shirts and encouraged students to take a stand against the bullying by wearing ‘a sea of pink’. The PC4L Team teacher committee is planning ac‐tivities for the Day of Pink at KPS. Show your support!
