The land of this beautiful estate was originally owned by Samil D. Park who

sold it to H. A. Beale / Parkesburg Iron Company on December 11, 1889.

(Page 397, Chester County Courthouse Records) The mansion was built

under the direction of the Parkesburg Iron Company using the finest

materials and craftsmanship as well as plenty of steel beams for unparalleled

strength and beautiful architecture. The house was a built in a Federal Style

and some of these features and clues can still be seen today, such as theedges of the old stairs in the basement walls. As the Parkesburg Iron

Company flourished, this was home to company executives, their families,

    and their guests.

In the late 1920s, accomplished statesman Thomas W Baldwin purchased

the property and updated the house sparing no expense while he added

Victorian flare throughout the home. Turn of the century upgrades included

huge ornate cherry wooden beams on the 11 ceilings with columns

stretching to the Tiger Maple hard wood flooring throughout. Sunlight flows

through huge picture windows with ornate built in seats while a huge

accommodating dining room calls all who enter to dine. French doors with

glass door knobs open to an intimate parlor with soft corner lighting shyly

waits as the grand staircase, which Baldwins daughter would later descendin all her splendor to present her hand in marriage in front of all who

gathered, under the fine crystal chandelier, stairs spill out into the oversized

    living room.

Included with the sale of the house are original title transfer Deeds from May

14, 1931 documenting the purchase of the home by Irvine W and Mary

Emma Guest from Mr. Baldwin. Also included are title transfer deeds from

March 17, 1938 documenting the purchase of the home by Asher Hawk from

both J. Frank McElwee and Thomas W. Baldwin. Ashers Pharmacy was

only a few blocks away on W 1st Ave.

For the next 62 years the estate and well-manicured grounds would be

known by both visitors and locals alike as The Hawks Nest. When Asherspharmacy closed, the pharmacys Grand Mirror became proudly displayed

above the fire place and one of the pharmacys Tiffany style stained glass

lamps was prominently hung in the library. Ashers wife Viola was a

well-known school teacher and often tutored students here in her home.

    On June 30 1983, Viola passed away and the estate was split into 3 parcels;

the corner lot at the intersection of Church St. and 1st Ave was left to her son

Lewis Hawk, while the remaining two parcels were left to her daughter Joy

    Morris.

In Aug of 1999 Christian Usavage purchased the estate from Joy. Three

months later Christian watched in amazement as his new bride to be, Barbara

Battle would also descend in all her splendor to present her hand in marriage

in front of friends and family gathered in the living room, once again under

the fine crystal chandelier. Some guests remarked they even saw Thomas W

Baldwin smile and wink in approval.

Christian, Barbara and their family have loved the estates rich history and

timeless splendor. They look forward to passing the estates beauty on, in the

wonderful legacy all started by the founders and visionaries of Parkesburg

    and the Parkesburg Iron Company.
