“When you lose weight, you gain confidence. I’ve lost 232 pounds. That’s a lot of confidence.”

Steve Snuffer

C ARE THAT GOES FURTHER

Being heavy took a serious toll on both my health and my confidence. I had

asthma, sleep apnea, even borderline diabetes, and just walking to my car

was a struggle. But with help from the team at the Emerson Surgical Weight

Loss Program, led by one of the top weight loss surgeons in the country, I was

able to lose more than 200 pounds. Nearly all of my health problems have

disappeared, and I can finally do all the things I want to do. Because nothing

builds confidence like a clean bill of health. | To learn more about Steve’s inspiring

story and to register for upcoming info sessions in Concord and Leominster,

visit emersonhospital.org/weightloss or call 978-287-3532.

Designated by the American College of Surgeons as a Level I Accredited Bariatric Center, The Emerson Surgical Weight Loss Program at Emerson Hospital is a Center of Excellence.

An Exhibition Presented By The Sudbury Valley

Nature PhotographersThe Sudbury Valley Nature

Photographers, in collabora-tion with the Sudbury Valley Trustees, are pleased to pres-ent an exhibition of nature pho-tographs by ten of our mem-bers in the Raytheon Room of the Wayland Public Library, 5

Concord Road, Wayland, MA. The exhibit will be open for viewing from Nov. 2 through Nov. 30 during normal library hours, except when there is a scheduled event taking place in the meeting room.

The exhibit is inspired in part by SVT’s newest book and trail guide, “40 Walks West of Boston”. Photographs in the show were created on many of the SVT-owned or managed properties or adjacent local,

state, or national conservation lands which appear in the book.

SVNP members participat-ing are Sue Abrahamsen, Terri Ackerman, Hendrik Broekman, Joan Chasan, Steve Gabeler, Wayne Hall, Betsy Moyer, Barbara Peskin, Anne Umphrey, and Carol Walsh.

A “meet the artists” recep-tion will be held on Sunday, November 8, from 2:30 until 4:30. Beginning at 3:30, several of the participating photogra-

phers will give brief, informal “gallery talks” describing their works on display.

For more information, contact Wayne Hall, exhibit curator, at [email protected].

For directions and library hours, go to www.waylandli-brary.org.

“Halloween, All Souls And Day Of The

Dead...”On November 1, join the

congregation at First Parish of Sudbury Unitarian Universalist, and Rev. Dr. Marjorie Matty as she reviews history and practic-es, religious or not, of honoring those who have transcended this mortal plane. Pagan and reli-gious beliefs of the “thinning of the veil” between the liv-ing world and that of the dead have circulated around the world in different cultures for millen-nia. What is it about changing weather and falling leaves that brings us to a place of desiring to

commune with those who have gone on before?

This Sunday we will be hon-oring those who have died with an “altar” to our loved ones. Please bring a photo or memento to presente. Honoring our dead regardless of belief and what helps us to make meaning at times of great loss is the topic of the Sunday service.

This Sunday at First Parish Sudbury children aged 0 to 4 are invited to play in our nurs-ery. Children 4-6 are invited to our Spirit Play class, where we are introducing the history of Halloween in an age-appro-priate way through storytell-ing, creative play, and arts and

crafts. Older children still in grade school are invited to join our Sing to the Power class, where we are exploring how we can create positive change in the world through the power of growth this week. As Anne Morrow Lindbergh wrote: “Only in growth, reform, and change, paradoxically enough, is true security to be found.” 7th and 8th graders are invited to join the Breakfast Club, and the high school youth group will meet at noon, after social hour.

First Parish of Sudbury is a Unitarian Universalist congre-gation located at 327 Concord Road. We embrace diversity and welcome the participation of all persons who wish to join us for worship, activities and service to the greater communities.

For more information about upcoming events, visit fpsud-bury.org or call 978-443-2043.

Memorial Congregational

Church In Sudbury“No matter who you are or

where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here!” Join us for worship this Sunday at 10am. We will join together to sing songs, listen to the preachers’ reflections on the week’s scrip-ture and lean on one another and God in prayer.

Sunday worship service begins at 10 a.m.; youth from pre-K to 8th grade stay with their family in worship for the first 15 min-utes and are invited to leave wor-ship after the children’s moment to go to Discovery Kingdom where they use theater, art, cook-ing, games and more to further their understanding of the Bible. We are just starting a new unit on Christology where we will be studying all the different roles of Christ….as teach, as leader, as healer... Childcare for infants

and toddlers is provided every Sunday from 9:30 a.m. until the end of the service.

Many stories from our scrip-tures take place at a well. In addition to providing life-giving refreshment, communal wells are often the location of God-centered conversations that lead to deeper human relationships.

We gather on Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. seeking the same. Our time together is meant to build relationships and be refreshing. A variety of ideas are discussed including cur-rent events, theological ideas, and how we feel called to be “church.” We seek God through liturgy, communion, and other spiritual practices. Sometimes dialogue is inspired by sacred and secular music or video. We conclude with communion.

Everyone is invited to partici-pate as much or as little as com-fortable. Join us on Wednesdays at 7pm in the parlor of MCC

located at the corner of Concord Rd and Church St in Sudbury. There is a seat at the table for you. For more information, please contact the church office at 978-443-3885 or [email protected]

On Saturday, Oct 31, MCC will be sponsoring an electronic recycling event in the church parking lot. From 9-3 a state-licensed recycling company will have a truck to accept virtually anything with a cord. Fees range from free for small items such as cords, phones to $10 for moni-tors, air conditioners, stoves to $20 to $40 for TVs. All items will be properly and securely recycled.

MCC is located at 26 Concord Rd (across from Goodnow Library in Sudbury) and is open to and accepting of all persons regardless of race, ethnicity, gender expression and identity, sexual orientation, age, ability, marital status or financial situa-tion. All areas of the building are universally accessible including the Church School wing, which

is accessible by portable ramps present in the building. An accessible, gender-neutral, fam-ily restroom with changing table is available. For more informa-tion, please go to MCCsudbury.org or call 978-443-3885.

Marijuana In Massachusetts

The League of Women Voters of Sudbury will hold an Educational Forum: Marijuana

in Massachusetts on Sunday, November 8th from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Goodnow Library, 21 Concord Road, Sudbury.

There is much to discuss about this issue. Massachusetts

has already legalized medical marijuana. Legislation and a ballot question for the legaliza-tion of recreational marijuana are pending in Massachusetts and, according to a Los Angeles Times Associated Press report in the spending bill passed by Congress in early October, states where medical marijuana is legal will no longer need to worry about federal drug agents raiding retail operations. Agents will be prohibited from doing so. This is despite the federal law prohibit-ing marijuana.

There will be ample time for attendee’s questions and com-ments, and for responses.

The LWV has not taken a posi-tion on marijuana. The League takes positions on issues only after a thorough study, followed by taking a consensus of mem-bers’ wishes. Those planning this forum have sought to present all sides relative to recreational and medical marijuana.

The panelists include: Senator William Brownsberger, who will speak in favor of legalizing mar-ijuana; Representative Hannah Kane who will speak in oppo-sition to legalizing marijuana; and Robert Moura, Director of Pharmacy at Emerson Hospital,

who will speak about whether there is any scientific support for the use of marijuana.

Sudbury Valley Trustees

Sudbury Valley Trustees (SVT) is offering a bluebird box building workshop on Saturday, November 7, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Wolbach Farm in Sudbury. In this workshop, led by Jesse Koyen, SVT Land Stewardship Coordinator and MassLIFT AmeriCorps member, you will learn what bluebirds need for a good nesting place and assemble bluebird boxes from pre-cut materials. Learn about the decline of the Eastern Bluebird and the predator and habitat issues that have plagued these lovely native birds. Recent efforts to provide nesting boxes has made an impact in the blue-bird rebounding population. You can take the nesting box home and install on your own property or offer to SVT for use in an appropriate local habitat. Open to adults and children 10 and older with an adult. Space is lim-ited and registration is required. SVT Members:$25, Non-Members, $35.00; fee includes materials. For more details and

The Best Of The NECCC Prints

On Wednesday, November 4, the Assabet Valley Camera Club (AVCC) will host a pro-gram showing all the color and the black-and-white prints that received medals and awards at last summer’s yearly New England Camera Club Council Conference (NECCC). These winners—approximately 35 prints covering a huge variety of subjects and techniques—will be on display, allowing for close viewing and lively comments. Attendees will not only learn what the judges said about the images, but they can also partici-pate in discussions and critiques.

Art Vaughan is the present-er. He has an extensive pho-tographic pedigree: honorary life member of the Merrimack Valley Camera Club; currently a member of the Massachusetts Camera Naturalists and the Photographic Historical Society of New England; and Vice President and Master Member of the New England Camera Club Council (NECCC). For decades, Art worked in various photo-graphic fields for Bell Labs, Lucent, AT&T, and other high-tech companies. He now enjoys practicing a variety of special-ized photographic techniques, as well as digital restoration of antique images. Art is a lifelong

experimenter and lens hacker, looking for new uses for broken lenses and other optical compo-nents.

This program is free and open to the general public. AVCC welcomes both new and prospec-tive members—anyone interest-ed in photography or in enhanc-ing photographic skills. We meet at 7:30 PM the first and third Wednesdays of the month from now through June at the Hudson Senior Center, 29 Church St., Hudson. For more information, call Liz West (978) 263-2853 or visit our website at http://www.assabetvalleycc.com.

Together with the Women’s Movement in the United States and the increas-ing leadership of women in near-ly every sector of American life, women have changed the con-tours of American Jewish syna-gogue and organizational life. We will explore the specific con-tributions of women to Jewish liturgy, congregational gover-nance, and the changing role of the synagogue in our lives. Join us on Sunday, November 1st at 10 am. There is no charge for this program, and all are welcome!

Assabet Offering Special Tour For

Whitcomb StudentsThe traditional 8th grade tours

of Assabet Valley Regional Technical High are in full swing this month and in November, as the local middle schools bring groups of interested stu-dents through the newly reno-vated technical high school. In the case of Marlborough’s Whitcomb School, no formal tour was planned, but Assabet Valley has decided to offer those students an opportunity to visit on Election Day, November 3, while Whitcomb is closed due

to being a polling place. “We of course are disappointed that Marlborough isn’t making the usual tour arrangements which would let us provide buses to bring the students over, but we have come up with a plan this year that should provide another option. Tours will start at 9:30 AM with coffee and pastries in our Epicurean Restaurant, and should be finished by 11:30 AM. The only difficult part is that the parents will have to make their own travel arrangements, so we are urging car-pooling among friends. We are only asking that parents call and let us know who is coming, so we are prepared with enough tour guides to make it an enjoyable and informative experience,” announced Alyssia Berghaus, Director of Pupil Personnel Services at the school.

Parents are asked to call the Admissions Office, 508-485-9430, ext. 1250, and reserve a spot for their son/daughter. Parking is available at the rear of the school in the Epicurean Restaurant parking lot, and that entrance will be open for the tour at that time. For those who park in the front lot, sign in with the Receptionist and then meet at the restaurant.

Individual tours can always be made by contact-ing the Admissions Office, and December 2 is the school’s Exhibit/Admissions Night, from 6 – 8:30 PM, offering another opportunity to see the school and all 17 technical program offer-ings.

Help Kids With Food Allergy To Feel Confident And SafeParents and teachers of chil-

dren with food allergies are invited to a discussion with psy-chologist Jennifer LeBovidge on Monday, November 9 at 6:45 p.m. at the Metro-Northwest Asthma & Allergy Educational Support Group, which meets at the Children’s Hospital/Beth Israel Medical Care Center, 482 Bedford St., Lexington. The pro-gram is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is not required.

Dr. LeBovidge specializes in working with children with food allergies and their families at Boston Children’s Hospital. She has developed and led coping skills groups for them, and has a particular interest in foster-ing children’s developmental-ly appropriate involvement in their allergy management. Her

research interests include under-standing the emotional and social impact of food allergies and developing interventions to help improve the quality of life for children with food allergies and their families. She is co-author of Living Confidently with Food Allergy: A Guide for Parents and Families.

“It is important to identify the many opportunities in daily life to help children become com-fortable and secure about how to manage their food allergies,” says Sharon Schumack, Director of Education for the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, New England Chapter, which sponsors the support group’s

educational programs. “Dr. LeBovidge is a great resource for helping families with children of all ages to develop these skills.”

AAFA New England orga-nizes educational support group programs throughout the region, publishes a newsletter, and runs a telephone resource and refer-ral line for people coping with allergies and asthma. Nine Tips To Help Baby Safely Sleep And

Co-sleep(NAPSI)—Here’s eye-

opening news about babies: According to the National Sleep Foundation, nearly one in four parents have their children sleep in their beds for at least part of the night.

While this has long been pop-ular around the world because it can encourage bonding and help everyone get more sleep, many doctors, boards of health and other safety experts suggest you have to be very careful about how you go about it.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has come up with a few safety and comfort sugges-tions to help the whole family sleep better at night:

• Always place babies to sleep on their backs during naps and at nighttime.

• Avoid letting the baby get

Sudoku

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Fun By The NumbersLike puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!

too hot. Dress the baby lightly for sleep. Set the room tempera-ture in a range that is comfort-able for a lightly clothed adult.

• Place your baby on a firm mattress, covered by a fitted sheet.

• Babies should sleep in an area that’s always smoke free.

• Toys and other soft bedding, including fluffy blankets, com-forters, pillows, stuffed animals, bumper pads, and wedges should not be in the crib with the baby.

• Sleep clothing such as SwaddleMe blankets are safer than a traditional blanket.

In addition, Dr. James J. McKenna, of the Mother-Baby Behavioral Sleep Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame, has this advice:

• Adult beds were not designed to ensure infants’ safety, and he says infants should not sleep with other children, only with a responsible adult prepared to take responsibility for the baby.

• Mothers with very long hair should tie it up at night to keep it from getting wrapped around their baby’s neck if they share the bed.

• Anyone on sedatives, medi-cations or drugs, intoxicated or a very sound sleeper, should not

co-sleep on the same surface with an infant.

One solution for many par-ents is a special sleeper designed just for co-sleeping infants. The By Your Side Sleeper provides a cozy environment with easy access to soothe baby and may be the safest way for baby to sleep next to you.

Designed to put your baby’s comfort and safety first, it has a sturdy metal frame to keep you from rolling over on top of your baby during sleep. Mesh sides provide a clear view of your baby for parental peace of mind at all times and help air circulate to protect baby from overheating. The firm mattress

pad has a washable fitted sheet in soft, comfortable fabrics. Some models have soothing melodies, sounds and two-speed vibration to calm baby and help encourage peaceful sleep.

Watching Your Weight?

Look For Polyols In Your Food To Cut The Sugar, Not The Flavor

(NAPSI)—There’s good news for those who want to reduce the amount of sugar in their diet and still satisfy their craving for the taste of something sweet.

Many food products are made with polyols, a group of reduced-calorie sweeteners. These sugar alternatives are being used as ingredients in a wide range of foods including ice cream, choc-olates, baked goods and more.

Get To Know PolyolsPolyols are low-digestible car-

bohydrates offering the sweet taste of sugar but with fewer calories.

Polyols and sugars are metabolized in different ways. Metabolizing polyols requires very small amounts of insulin or even none at all. As a result,

polyols have considerably less than the four calories per gram of sugar and other carbohydrates. This makes them good options for people with diabetes.

The result of eating foods and beverages made with polyols is the same sweet taste of sugar but with fewer calories. By offering flavor and reduced caloric value, polyols can help people look-ing to improve their diets while continuing to enjoy their favorite sweet foods in moderation.

Foods With PolyolsIncluding foods with polyols

in your meals can be an effec-tive way to maintain a sugar-free or reduced-sugar diet, and polyols can serve as beneficial sugar replacers in a wide variety of foods and beverages.

You probably already have some foods with polyols in your kitchen. Some of the most popu-lar foods with polyols include candies, ice cream and other

dairy products, baked goods and fruit spreads. You can also find polyols in chocolates, fillings and frostings, canned fruits, bev-erages and yogurt.

Mints and chewing gum may also contain polyols, which have properties that keep these prod-ucts sweet without promoting tooth decay. Some toothpastes, mouthwashes and pharmaceuti-cal products like throat lozenges also contain polyols.

And thanks to the variety and safety of polyols, additional sug-ar-free foods are on the way.

Finding PolyolsThere are many polyols used

today. To find out if a product contains polyols as an alterna-tive to sugar, look for the labels “sugar free” or “no sugar added.” You may find the name of one or many polyols on the Nutrition Facts panel for these products, by names including erythritol, isomalt, lactitol, maltitol or malt-itol syrups, mannitol, sorbitol and xylitol, as well as polyglyci-tols (hydrogenated starch hydro-lysates, or HSH).

To learn more, visit www.polyol.org.

SHELTER FOR CATSPAT BRODY

Stella Female, 3 years old, brown

I came to the shelter recently when my owner had to move and unfor-tunately could not take me with her. Every time you come in room 3, I’ll follow you around hoping to get your attention. No one is tak-ing the hint, so let me spell this out PLEASE TAKE ME HOME. I’m a real sweetie and get along well with other cats. Once I acclimate to a new environment I’m fine, but don’t be surprised if I hide at first. It won’t last forever and when I stop hiding, you’ll see what a great kitty I can be. All cats have been spayed/neutered and are up to date on shots. Please visit our website at www.catsontheweb.org to view all our shelter residents and crafts.
