ON THE COVER Pictured on this week’s cover Is St. Anthony of Padua, a wonderworking saint who lived during the 13th century. St. Anthony’s feast day is June 13th. Most people know St. Anthony as the saint in charge of finding lost items, but St. Anthony was the instrument through whom God performed many miracles during his life. Besides being an acclaimed preacher, St. Anthony prayed for and received miracles of raising the dead, commanding the weather, multiplying food and drink, healing the sick, bilocation, and even being able to hold the infant Jesus in his arms.

“During the 13th century St. Anthony of Padua was reported to have converted a hardened heretic through a rather unique contest. The heretic, by the name of Bononillo, was unmoved by the reasoning of the ‘hammer of heretics,’ as St. Anthony was called. Bononillo was as stubborn as the mule that stood beside him.

Eyeing the mule, Anthony made an offer to Bononillo. He asked him whether he would give up his heresy if the mule were to bow down and adore its Creator present in the Blessed Sacrament. The heretic answered he would, provided he could lay down certain conditions: for two days the mule was not to be fed, and on the third day it was to be led into the public square.

On one side of the square would be placed a tempting pile of fresh feed, on the opposite side Anthony could stand with what Bononillo contemptuously called the ‘body of Christ.’ Anthony agreed, but in all humility made one condition. If the animal did not kneel before the Blessed Sacrament, his sins alone were to be blamed.

The day arrived for this strange contest and the square was crowded with people. When the derisive Bononillo arrived with his halfstarved mule, he was fully confident that his mule had sense and appetite enough to go after the feed. But he was wrong. Anthony had implored his Lord in the intervening two days for the soul of this heretic. God did not let his faithful servant down.

When turned loose, the mule without the least hesitation advanced towards Anthony and knelt in an attitude of adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. With much emotion and contrition the heretic too fell on his knees and gave up his heresy.”

2019 MASS BOOK OPENS

Thursday, July 5th, 8:30 AM

The 2019 Mass Book will open Thursday, July 5th at 8:30 AM. NO

EARLY BIRDS, PLEASE! ☺ We ask that you have a list of your dates, times and intentions printed neatly ahead of time. This will help speed the process up. The usual stipend is $10.00 for each Mass. To avoid standing in line, you may request your Masses ahead of

time by mail or by an envelope in the collection basket marked “Mass Intention,” but Masses requested in person have first priority. No Mass intentions will be taken over the phone or via email. Please note that we cannot promise to have the Mass date and time you are requesting, but we will do our best to schedule a Mass as close as possible to the requested date. Because of the large number of Mass requests and the fact that we have more than 6,000 registered families here at St. Mary’s, all families will be limited to 4 Masses said here at the parish for 2018; one of those Masses can be on a Saturday evening or on a Sunday, or Holy Day of Obligation; the remaining three Masses will be scheduled on weekdays. All additional Mass requests will be sent to retired priests in the diocese, so the Masses will still be celebrated, but we will not know when or which priest is celebrating the Mass. If you have any questions, please contact Maria in the parish office at (847) 6693137, x100 or [email protected].

RESPECT LIFE CORNER

In June, the Respect Life Committee sends heartfelt thanks to you, our fellow parishioners. Your prayers and sacrifices day in and day out in spiritual fatherhood and motherhood to all in need in this stupendous battle for life are bearing great fruit and laying the foundation for a new spring in the culture of life. We are so grateful to you.

Celebrate with us that:

1. Our President, through his State Department's first report on human rights in the world, declared that there is no human right to an abortion. New language about the "coercion in population control" was also added.

2. Congress passed and the President signed two new laws allowing victims of human trafficking to sue the websites on which they were bought and sold. Moreover, on the heels of this, nearly every human trafficking website shut down or ceased operations.

3. State office holders are voting nearly weekly on a variety of bills to stop abortion. Iowa has now passed a law, deemed "The Heartbeat Law", making abortion illegal once a baby's heartbeat is detected (around 6 weeks,

exceptions for rape, incest, fetal abnormalities). In addition, many states are passing laws restricting abortion with the purpose of challenging the constitutionality of

the 1973 US Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade that made abortion legal in all 50 states.

4. In the wake of the student walk out for gun violence, prolife students from over 250 high schools and colleges nationwide walked out for 17 minutes to "honor the lives of the millions of aborted babies every year" said Rocklin High School, CA student organizer Brandon Gillespie.

5. By executive order, President Trump reinstated the founding rights of persons representing religious institutions and other taxexempt charitable organizations to make political endorsements and engage in political campaigns. Directives were given to the IRS, the Treasury and the Justice Departments to uphold these rights.

The 8:00 AM Mass on Saturday, June 9th, and the 6:00 PM Adoration hour on Sundays during the month of June will be in thanksgiving for the fruits of your answered prayers and penances for life.

father on earth like the Father in heaven. Devin is a husband, a father of five, and the cofounder of the Fathers of St. Joseph, an apostolate dedicated to the renewal of authentic fatherhood. Visit the kiosk in the narthex for this CD.

VOCATIONS CORNER

SAY “YES” AND DON’T BE AFRAID TO COMMIT!

One issue that I see present in the lives of many teenagers today (although we’re all susceptible!) is the difficulty to say yes and to commit to something. For example, one of them might receive an invitation to go to a party on a Friday night about a week away, and even though they are 100% open and available on that evening, they say “Maybe” rather than saying “yes.” The reason is because they want to keep their options open in case a better offer comes along! This happens all the time, and again I think this sometimes happens to all of us. We can see a good opportunity arise, but we’re hesitant to embrace it because we’d rather do something great! I think that the biggest place where this plagues individuals comes when trying to discern one’s vocation especially the question of what God might be calling one to dedicate their entire life to! Even if we feel called to something, we can be hesitant to take the leap of Faith and enter into it because we don’t know if something better might be on the horizon. What we have to trust is that if God is calling us and we sense this, that it WILL be what is best for us. So too, if we assess things by our standards, chances are that we’ll think that something else will fulfill us more than what God is calling us to, because more often than not the value of our vocation and the difference that we can make in the world will not be immediately apparent. So if God calls, say “YES!” and prepare yourself for the time of your life! Fr. Romke

in the Holy Eucharist exposed upon the altar of the chapel for adoration. If you would like to remember a loved one or have another prayer intention remembered for one week, please fill out the form below and return it to the parish office (12 candles per year per family). We'll list the intentions in the bulletin for one week. Your donation will help us maintain the chapel and provide the candles we'll be using.
