☩ GATHERING ☩

The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God.

PRELUDE Emily Brands

“Come, O Thou Traveler Unknown” arr. Dale Word

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

All may make the sign of the cross ☩ the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, abounding in steadfast love toward us,

healing the sick and raising the dead, showering us with every good gift.

Amen.

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Silence is kept for reflection.

Just and gracious God,

we come to you for healing and life. Our sins hurt others and diminish us;

we confess them to you. Our lives bear the scars of sin; we bring these also to

you. Show us your mercy, O God. Bind up our wounds, forgive us our sins,

and free us to love, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

The apostle Paul assures us: “When we were dead in our trespasses, God made us

alive together with Christ, nailing the record of our sins to the cross.” Jesus says

to you, ☩ “Your sins are forgiven.” Be at peace, and tell everyone how much

God has done for you. Amen.

GATHERING HYMN 805 Lead On, O King Eternal

GREETING

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the

Holy Spirit be with you all.

And also with you.

The Lutheran Order for

Worship has a basic

pattern—Gather, Word,

Meal, Send—offering a

structure that allows for

flexibility. Within the

order, there are both

“essential” and “non-

essential” elements.

It may be interesting to

note that the Greeting

and Prayer of the Day

are the only “essential”

elements in the

Gathering.

3

HYMN OF PRAISE

PRAYER OF THE DAY

O God, from you come all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works.

Give to us, your servants, that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts

may be set to obey your commandments; and also that we, being defended from

the fear of our enemies, may live in peace and quietness, through Jesus Christ,

our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Please be seated.

☩ WORD ☩

God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song.

FIRST READING Ephesians 1:3-14

Response after the conclusion of the reading: Thanks be to God.

The Prayer of the Day—

or Collect, meaning “the

gathering of the people

together”—is a short

prayer that has a very

specific structure of five

parts: The Invocation or

address (usually God

the Father), the

Acknowledgement

(description of the

Divine), the Petition,

Aspiration (the desired

result), and the

Conclusion. All this is

done while tying in the

theme of the Scriptures

for the day.

In Jesus, all of God’s

plans and purposes

have been made known

as heaven and earth are

united in Christ.

Through Jesus, we have

been chosen as God’s

children and have been

promised eternal

salvation.

.

As Jesus and his disciples

begin to attract

attention, Mark recalls

the story of John the

Baptist’s martyrdom.

Like John, Jesus and his

disciples will also suffer

at the hands of those

opposed to the gospel of

salvation.

PSALM 24 (Read responsively)

The earth is the Lord‘s and all that is in it,

the world and those who dwell therein.

For the Lord has founded it upon the seas

and established it upon the rivers.

Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord,

and who may stand in God’s holy place?

Those of innocent hands and purity of heart,

who do not swear on God’s being, nor do they pledge by what is false.

They shall receive blessing from the Lord

and righteousness from the God of their salvation.

Such is the generation of those who seek you, O Lord,

of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob.

Lift up your heads, O gates; and be lifted up, O ever lasting doors,

that the King of glory may come in.

Who is this King of glory?

The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle!

Lift up your heads, O gates; and be lifted up, O everlasting doors,

that the King of glory may come in.

Who is this King of glory?

Truly, the Lord of hosts is the King of glory.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

GOSPEL Mark 6:14-29

Biblical Storyteller: Mary Kieras

Response after the announcement: Glory to you, O Lord.

Response after the conclusion: Praise to you, O Christ.

HYMN OF THE DAY Let Justice Flow Like Streams

APOSTLES CREED (5:30)

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

6

Lydia Marie McDonough

is the daughter of

Andrew Paul McDonough

and Hillary Lynn

(Sopchick) McDonough

The family’s baptismal

guides are Al and

Marguerite Hanna.

BAPTISM (10:30)

Lydia Marie McDonough has been presented for baptism in order to become a

child of God!

Through Baptism we are made children of God!

Martin Luther, in his Small Catechism, teaches that “Baptism brings about

forgiveness of sins, redeems from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation

to all who believe it, as the Word and promise of God declare.”

Through Baptism we are made children of God!

“But how can water do such great things? Clearly the water does not do it, but the

Word of God which is with, in, and among the water, and faith, which trusts this

Word of God in the water. For without the Word of God the water is plain water

and not a baptism, but with the Word of God it is a baptism, that is grace-filled

water of life and a ‘bath of the new birth in the Holy Spirit.’”

Through Baptism we are made children of God!

“This baptism signifies that daily the old person in us, with all our sins and evil

desires, is to be drowned through sorrow for sin and repentance, and that daily a

new person is to come forth and rise up to live before God in righteousness and

purity forever.”

Through Baptism we are made children of God!

How will this child know what God has done?

Parents, family, friends, and we, the church, have the responsibility of

teaching and helping this child to grow in faith and understanding.

Do you parents, sponsors, and members of Christ’s church accept this

responsibility: to bring Lydia to the services of God’s house; to teach her the

Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments; to place in her hands the

Holy Scriptures and provide for instruction in the Christian faith?

We do.

Please stand

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the

waters and you created the world by your Word, calling forth life in which you

took delight. By the waters of the flood you condemned the wicked and saved

those whom you had chosen, Noah and his family. Through water you led your

people Israel from slavery in Egypt to freedom in the promised land.

In the waters of the Jordan Jesus was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy

Spirit. By the baptism of Jesus’ death and resurrection you delivered us from the

power of sin and death and set us free to live in you. Send your Holy Spirit upon

this water and upon this child who is washed in it that she may be given new

life. Wash away the sin of this child who is cleansed by this water and bring her

forth as an inheritor of your glorious kingdom, now and forever. Amen.

7

Let us confess our faith and the faith that Lydia is given now.

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended into hell.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Please be seated.

Lydia Marie, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy

Spirit. Amen.

God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we give you thanks for freeing your sons and

daughters from the power of sin and for raising them up to a new life through this holy

sacrament. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon Lydia, the spirit of wisdom and

understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of

the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence. Amen.

Lydia, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross

of Christ forever. Amen.

Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify

your Father in heaven.

O God, the giver of all life, look with kindness upon the father and mother of this child.

Let them ever rejoice in the gift you have given them. Make them teachers and

examples of righteousness for their child. Strengthen them in their own Baptism so they

may share eternally with their child the salvation you have given them, through Jesus

Christ our Lord. Amen.

This child is baptized. The gift is given, Lydia is a reborn child of God! Trinity

Lutheran Church: There are two things you can do for this family. You can pray for

Lydia, her parents and sponsors; and you can welcome and accept her as a fellow

member of the body of Christ.

We promise to pray for you, Lydia and for your family. We welcome you into the

Lord’s family and accept you as a fellow disciple of the body of the crucified and

risen Lord, child of the same heavenly Father, and worker with us in the kingdom

of God.

8

Just as we come to

the table with gifts

of our own wealth,

so also we bring the

fruits of the earth

and human labor in

bread and cup.

These gifts also

remind us that God

is the true owner of

all that we might

claim.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

Each portion of the prayers ends: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

PEACE

The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you.

The people greet one another with a sign of Christ's peace, saying, “Peace be with you.”

Please be seated.

☩ MEAL ☩

God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ.

GATHERING OF GIFTS

An offering is gathered for the mission of the church, including the care of those in need.

MUSICAL OFFERING Lee Ford

"Whispering Hope" by Septimus Winner

Soft as the voice of an angel, Breathing a lesson unheard, Hope with a gentle persuasion Whispers her comforting word: Wait till the darkness is over, Wait till the tempest is done. Hope for the sunshine tomorrow, After the shower is gone. Refrain Whispering hope, oh how welcome thy voice. Making my heart in its sorrow rejoice. If, in the dusk of the twilight, Dim be the region a far. Will not the deepening darkness Brighten the glimmering star? Then when the light is upon us, Why should the heart sink away? When the dark midnight is over, Watch for the breaking of day. Refrain

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, …we praise your name and join their

unending hymn:

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER + WORDS OF INSTITUTION

The presiding minister continues.

With the beginning of

the Great Thanksgiving

prayer, we enter the

main body of the

Eucharist. Together, we

offer thanks for all

God’s acts in history.

Taken from “The Work of the

People, What We Do in Worship

and Why” by Marlea Gilbert.

The Eucharistic Prayer

helps to make room for

us to imagine justice

and peace even where

none seems possible.

Most of all, it prepares

us for the meal,

awakening us to

Christ’s presence and

the Spirit’s activity in

our midst.

People, What We Do in Worship

and Why” by Marlea Gilbert.
