It’s the season around which we orbit. Waiting for the warmth on our backs and the sand between our toes. For our skin to look bright, healthy and sun-kissed. Anticipating summer is practically a national sport. It only makes sense, then, that we
entrust our essential beauty prep to those who know best: locals. Such as Kevin Murphy, who started his self-titled haircare brand in
2003 and who creates lush products highlighting native ingredients including baobab seed extract and Kakadu plum, which has the highest concentration of vitamin C in any known plant. “What Australian brands do so well is thinking out of the box when it comes to formulations,” he says. “I believe that what goes inside the bottle is just as important as the look it creates.”
Sodashi founder Megan Larsen is an expert when it comes to the bounty of beauty in Australia’s golden soil. Her brand is synonymous with luxury and nature, with clever, refi ned formulations housed in heavy navy glass bottles. “Australian beauty isn’t just about the latest trend. It’s about innovation and leading the way,” she says. “Sodashi uses exquisite Australian clays as well as pure plant oils and extracts. They’re all grown, extracted or distilled in Australia and we don’t select essential oils for their fragrance, but instead for their ability to balance the skin and regenerate skin cells.”
This Great Southern Land certainly has its share of exotic-sounding extracts — desert lime and quandong peach, anyone? But the classics are classics for a reason. Vicki Engsall co-founded with her father The Jojoba Company, a brand based entirely on the jojoba bean’s wax ester, which mimics our skin’s own oils. The beans are sustainably grown and processed on their farm in Yenda, New South Wales. “I’ve always been drawn to Australian skincare,” Engsall says. “We have a wonderful entrepreneurial spirit and a history of creating beautiful, effi cacious brands inspired by the land, local ingredients and our heritage.”
Where and how beauty products are made is something consumers are becoming more concerned about, too. “I’m really proud to be locally founded and made,” says Jess Hatzis, co-founder of cult brand Frank Body. “The most important thing to us was that our products were produced ethically, beautifully and at a price point that was acces-sible.” The brand started with one coffee scrub, and thanks to its savvy use of social media, playful messaging and, above all, premium product, they have sold more than two million units in fi ve years. Proof that Aussies love their beauty as much as they love their coffee: a lot.
Something else we love? Self-tan, of course. Luna Bronze co-founder Maddy Balderson is passionate about sun safety after being diagnosed with two basal cell carcinomas in her mid-twenties. Thankfully, surgery resulted in a positive outcome for Balderson, and the experience spurred her and co-founder Rhiannon Hall to develop a gradual tan that was both natural and luxurious. “Sunless tanning can be quite intimidating,” Balderson says. “We hope to encourage more people to achieve a tan in a safer way.”
Another brand passionate about being sun smart is named after a certain iconic beach. Bondi Sands co-founder Blair James says, “I spent a lot of my childhood travelling, and the perception of the bronzed Aussie was still alive and well all over the world. The Aussie summer still defi nes our culture and how the rest of the world sees us — I still get asked overseas, ‘Do you even need self-tan in Australia?’. That highlights how the Aussie culture has changed over the years. We’ve become a world leader in self-tan and in sun care,” he continues. “We still love our summers, we still want to look like we are from a sunburnt country, but without the negative health effects.”
BODYFrank Body Express-O Scrub, $20. While its
classic scrubs are loose, this cream-based
formula is ideal for pre-tan scrubbing so you can
really go at those trouble spots such as knees, elbows and ankles.
Lano Coconutter Body Milk, $23. This latest
body milk from the famed lanolin brand smells like summer holidays and leaves skin silky, not
slippery. Just what you’ll need to lock in your tan.
Sodashi Body Brilliance Cream, $95. Luxurious
in texture and finish, this whipped cream, rich in
B vitamins, helps reverse skin damage, and the
potent blend of Madagascan vanilla and
shea and mango butter is a feast for the senses.
NHAIR
Kevin.Murphy Killer.Waves, $50. A new take on the classic Aussie sea salt spray, this weightless
mist uses eyelash-lengthening technology to make curls appear fuller.
O&M Original Detox Shampoo, $33.
The Australian river mint helps deeply cleanse,
removing buildup from salt and styling products.
According to brand founder Jose Bryce
Smith, “It’s like makeup remover for your hair.”
Eleven Miracle Hair Treatment, $25.
This multitasking leave-in treatment launched
the Aussie brand. With its 11 benefits, from moisturising and
detangling to enhancing shine and preventing
chlorine and sun damage, it’s a summer staple.
