CORNER OF 28TH “Of presumption and holy water each one takes what one wants” is a well-known saying that carries a forceful message, one that fits perfectly today’s world and it applies to most people living in it – the presumptuous ones buried for centuries in the countless cemeteries worldwide, can no longer exhibit any sign of superiority, their arrogant behavior did not last long and it did not save them from the reality of life “we are dust and unto dust we shall return!” The Sacred Scriptures show us so many examples of numerous people whose humility serves as great examples for our lives; people who were so humble that caught God’s attention precisely because through their faith in the Lord and from bearing witness to God’s precepts, they give us a total confidence that following their steps – that is, the Lord’s steps – we will not lose track of the path – the only one – leading to Life Eternal. Two great examples of the humility the Lord asks us to follow is Mary, the Virgin of Nazareth, and John the Baptist. In the materialist society we are part of, many people struggle to be what they are not while others struggle to show something they have never been but they think they are worth more by showing off their arrogance and presumption, like a relative who passed by me soon after I arrived in Pico, coming from the United States, and kept on walking, with her nose held up, turning her face the opposite way. Her husband who had just been talking to me – he is a very nice person – went down to the dock to wait for her who came from Faial, and so she knew I was there looking at the people as they got off the boat. The sad thing is that people of her caliber really think that they gain and show importance by acting that way but the truth of the matter is that, in the end, her behavior is that of someone who feels unsecure thus making a huge effort to show what she is not. The saying “one can only give what one has” says it all! Humility and sincerity of heart are among the qualities the Lord expects from us. We may think, seeing with human eyes, that humble and sincere people are fools, but we should be more concerned with what God thinks and expects from each one of us and our free willingness to always fulfil His will as Jesus always did. God respects our freedom, but mankind seldom does in regards to other human beings, like the lady I met at a Coffee shop in Faial, “Sweet Beak” seemingly very nice but who within instants revealed to have a sour beak and to be a fanatic about her religion Jehovah Witnesses only compared to that of the Pharisees, Scribes and the Doctors of the Law who were Jesus’ contemporaries. From the moment I walked in I could tell she was up to something. When she handed me a leaflet about her belief I refused to take it and told her to go somewhere else… She didn’t like it, she left me no other choice. Yes, we are free to be arrogant or humble, but we also free to reject or even condemn other people’s presumption or religious stubbornness, always having in mind that “Of presumption and holy water each one takes what one wants…” I choose holy water…

Parish Announcements The fundraising campaign for the painting of the Church

Our Newly Married Couples Group, meant for those who attend or would like to attend our Church, has its 3rd gathering scheduled for Friday, October 26, at 7pm. If you recently got married here, contact us. Together, we will work for stronger marriages.

Saturday, Dec. 8th, at 7pm, Christmas’ Pipe Organ Recital by Eleanor Muhawi. We will accept donations for the painting of the church.

Several people have shown interest in participating in “The Brick Fundraising Project” where we engrave the names of our deceased loved ones, in the bricks in front of the church, thus perpetuating their memory. If interested, contact us. When we know the cost per brick, we will reveal the information.

CANTO DA 28 “De presunção e água benta, cada um toma a que quer” é um ditado conhecido que contem uma mensagem forte, que se encaixa perfeitamente no mundo de hoje e que se aplica à maioria das pessoas que nele vivem - os presunçosos enterrados há séculos em inúmeros cemitérios do mundo já não podem exibir qualquer sinal de superioridade, o seu comportamento presunçoso não durou muito nem os salvou da realidade da vida "somos pó e em pó nos havemos de tornar"! As Sagradas Escrituras mostram-nos muitos exemplos de muitas pessoas cuja humildade serve como grandes exemplos para as nossas vidas; pessoas que foram tão humildes que chamaram a atenção de Deus precisamente porque, através da sua fé no Senhor e de dar testemunho dos preceitos de Deus, dão-nos uma total confiança de que, seguindo os seus passos - isto é, os passos do Senhor - nós não perderemos de vista o caminho - o único – que conduz à Vida Eterna. Dois dos grandes exemplos de humildade que o Senhor nos pede para seguir são Maria, a Virgem de Nazaré, e João Batista. Na sociedade materialista da qual somos parte, muitas pessoas lutam para ser o que não são, enquanto outras lutam para mostrar algo que nunca foram, mas pensam que valem mais mostrando a sua arrogância e presunção, como uma parente que passou por mim pouco depois de eu chegar ao Pico, vindo dos Estados Unidos, e seguiu o seu caminho de nariz erguido, virando o rosto para o lado oposto. O seu marido que acabara de falar comigo - ele é um indivíduo muito bom - foi até à doca esperar por ela que vinha do Faial, e por isso ela sabia que eu estava ali a ver as pessoas que saíam do barco. O que é triste que as pessoas do seu calibre realmente pensam que ganham e mostram importância agindo dessa forma, mas a verdade é que, no final, o seu comportamento é de alguém que se sente inseguro, fazendo um enorme esforço por mostrar o que não é. O ditado “Cada um dá que tem” diz tudo! Humildade e sinceridade de coração estão entre as qualidades que o Senhor espera de nós. Podemos pensar, vendo com olhos humanos, que pessoas humildes e sinceras são tolas, mas devemo-nos preocupar mais com o que Deus pensa e espera de cada um de nós e a nossa disposição de sempre cumprir a Sua vontade como Jesus sempre fez. Deus respeita a nossa liberdade, mas a humanidade raramente o faz em relação a outros seres humanos, como a senhora que conheci num café no Faial, “Bico Doce” aparentemente muito simpática, mas que, dentro de instantes, revelou ter um bico amargo e ser fanática pela sua religião, Testemunhas da Jeová, só comparada aos Fariseus, Escribas e Doutores da lei que foram contemporâneos de Jesus. A partir do momento em que entrei, percebi que ela tinha um plano. Quando me entregou um panfleto sobre a sua crença, recusei-me a recebê-lo e disse-lhe que fosse para outro sítio... Ela não gostou, mas não me deixou outra opção. Sim, somos livres para sermos arrogantes ou humildes, mas também somos livres para rejeitar ou mesmo condenar a presunção ou a teimosia religiosa de outras pessoas, tendo sempre em mente que “De presunção e água benta, cada um toma a que quer…” Escolho água benta…
