TOP TEN TIPS FOR JUICE FAST SUCCESS

Tip #1: EquipmentProper equipment is the very first step! I mean, would you climbMount Everest without the proper gear? Of course not! Same goes

for a juice fast you need to make sure you have all the equipmentnecessary before you embark upon your cleanse. Here are thethings youll need to get started:

1.Juicer or blender2.Good cutting knife3.Cutting board4.Strainer or nut milk bag5.Air-tight containers (a Thermos or mason jars)

A point about juicers vs. blenders:

There are lots of people who will say that you need a juicer toproperly fast. I say, PSHAW! If you want to use a blender, goahead! If you do use a blender, however, you are going to want tomake sure you are straining the juice fully so as to remove the fiber,so I would invest in a nut milk bag. Using a blender and a nut milkbag to produce juice is easy: first, blend all the ingredients until

liquefied. Next, drape the nut milk bag over an open container andpour the liquid into the bag. Then, holding the bag over thecontainer, you squeeze the juice out by wringing the bag as tight as

    you can. Voila.... JUICE!

Tip #2: GroceriesI advise buying enough groceries to last you three to four days. Oneof the great things about this book, is it clearly outlines how muchproduce is in each juice! Browse through the recipes, circle the

ones youd like to try, and make your grocery list based on thejuices you will be drinking for the next few days. Having enoughgroceries on hand lessens the temptation to pick up the phone andcall for take out!

    8/51

Tip #3: Juice Prep & CleanupOn your juice fast, it is typically suggested that you drink between64-96 ounces (2-3 liters) of juice daily. That is between 2-3quart/liter-sized mason jars of juice. You will find, as your juicefast progresses, you will be less and less hungry as your body is

receiving the nutrients it needs to be satiated. However, in thebeginning if you find yourself feeling hungry, it is okay to drinkMORE juice! Drinking more than the "recommended" amount is

just fine...remember that this is an individual journey and youshould constantly stay aware of your body's needs.

For busy people like myself, I recommend making your juice aheadof time, sealing it in an airtight Thermos or mason jar, and keepingit cold in the refrigerator. This way, you always have juice on hand.Making your juice all at one time also helps with cutting down your

cleanup time. Make sure that you are taking your juicer (orblender) apart and cleaning each of the pieces after each juicingsession. This will help to avoid bacteria and bad odors.

Tip #4: The ExtrasWATER! Water, water, waterand did I mention water? Actually, water should not be considered an extraits a NECESSITY! Inaddition to drinking your juice, you need to ensure you are flushingout the toxins being released by drinking plenty of water.

Why is this so important? Well, lets talk about toxins for a minute:

As our bodies store fat, the chemistry of the fat reflects the internalbody conditions at the time the fat was stored. Each year, theillnesses that you caught left a small residue of the virus or bacteria inyour fatty deposits. The toxins you ingested left their mark as well.Maybe it was that year in college when you drank too heavilybecause you were inexperiencedor trace amounts of antibiotics andgrowth hormones that were embedded in the abundance of meat you

ate during your high-protein diet phase. Deposits throughout yourbody have kept a sampling record of what you have been through.

    8

    9/51

As you cleanse and detoxify your body, you will be releasing thetoxins, bacteria, and viruses that were built up in your fatty deposits. As they are released, you may experience symptoms that youexperienced when you initially dealt with that particular malady orevent albeit in a milder form. You may get a runny nose, you mayfeel tired, you may develop body aches or you may even develop afever, as your body works its way through years of toxins anddisease. In fact, the symptoms you experience will likely be in thereverse order of when you first experienced them. Toxins that yourbody was exposed to in recent years will show their effect first, thenwill be followed by things that occurred earlier in your life.

    Excerpt from www.the-natural-path.com.

This is why water is so crucial during a fast. It is imperative to

flush out as much of the toxic waste that is being released in yoursystem as possible! Try to drink at least 2-3 liters of water eachday.

Also, you may want to add additional superfoods to the superyummy fruits and vegetables you will be juicing. For example, addflaxseed or hemp oil for added omega-3/6/9s, green superfoodpowders (such as wheatgrass, spirulina and blue green algae) forprotein and Vitamin B-12, or chia seeds for an extra nutrient boost.

These are not required during a fast, but may be a nice addition to

    your juices.

Tip #5: Length of FastTake the time to decide how long you are going to fast. If you are abeginner, you may want to shoot for a one to three-day fast to start.

This will allow you to get used to the flow of juicing. Remember, this is for YOUR health and longevity, not a comparison withsomeone else to beat how long they can go without solid food.Shoot for a time frame that is most realistic for you and your life.

HOWEVER! (... and here comes the big BUT!)

    9

  • 8/12/2019 101 Juice Fast Recipes

    10/51

Remember the most important rule of juicing LISTEN TO YOURBODY. If you find that you are feeling weak or extraordinarilyhungry, it may be a sign that your body is ready to break your fastand transition back to solid foods. Listen to your body andintuitively end your fast at a time that works for you. You may findthat time is before or after the initial day that you had planned oncompleting it.

Tip #6: TimingGive a lot of consideration to when you will begin your fast. Asuggestion for those of you who work outside the home; you manywant to consider beginning your fast on a Friday. Why a randomFriday? Because the first few days of your fast may be a bituncomfortable due to detox symptoms. You may want or need tospend Saturday and Sunday in the comfort of your own home.

Tip #7: Planning for DetoxWe covered toxin release in Tip #4, but its an important subjectand bears repeating! Detox is a natural part of the cleansingprocess. Many people do not look forward to the headaches, thenausea, the fatigue, the coated tongue, the body odor

Im not making this sound like fun, am I? I know, I know, but it isa necessary event. Poisons (or in this case, toxins) sting twice once on the way in and again on the way out. So, think of this as agood thing! The headaches are a sign that you are releasing thetoxins from your body!

Do I sound a bit too happy about detox? Well you may not share myenthusiasm, but you should plan for it, nonetheless. Understandthat you may feel less than perky the first few days, so make sure

you are getting plenty of rest and drinking lots of water. You mayalso want to schedule enemas and/or colon hydrotherapy sessions. Both enemas and colonics introduce quarts or gallons of water into

your system through the anus in order for you to flush the smalland large intestines, which is where a lot of toxins will be stored. Itmay not be pleasant to think about (or talk about!), but it is a greatway to help release the toxins from your system.

    11/51

Tip #8: Un-Sabotage YourselfA juice fast, while beneficial and cleansing, is not necessarily easy,so try not to make it harder by setting yourself up for failure. Afterdeciding how long you are going to fast, look ahead to see whatpossible pitfalls you can avoid. Do you have lunch with your co-

workers daily? Take your juice with you, or choose to drink yourjuice at your desk if you know their lunch choices are going to be atemptation for you. Do you cook dinner for your family? Thinkabout asking someone else to cook a couple of nights, or ask themto join you on your juice fast. Are you a fan of watching televisionevery night? The sheer amount of food commercials alone couldsend you over the edge! Think about switching to watching yourfavorite shows on DVD, Netflix or Hulu.com (which have far lesscommercials) to avoid temptation.

Tip #9: Set Up Your Support SystemPeople often ask me how I get through a long fast, and I alwaysrespond, I depend on my support system! Make sure that youhave a strong support system in place for the times you may befeeling a little weak. Here are just a few examples of the ways Imake it through my tough days. Notice, it's a FEW examples! Asupport system should have multiple parts!

Having a friend (who understands your juicing journey) thatyou can call during a craving.

Watching movies or documentaries that encourage health andwellness (Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead, Forks Over Knives andSuper Size Me are my personal favorites. They stay ready forviewing in my Netflix queue!).

Viewing and commenting in an online group or posting boardfull of like-minded people (the Fat, Sick & Nearly DeadFacebook page and Reboot community at JoinTheReboot.comare awesome!).

Watching YouTube videos of others who have done a juice fast(youd be surprised how encouraging it can be to watchsomeone elses journey. Heres my YouTube channel take alook at how I made it through my second fast).

    12/51

Tip #10: Track Your ProgressEven if you are doing a short fast, it is important to track theprogress you are experiencing. During this process, it is not justabout the numbers you see on the scale, but also about how yourbody is changing. I remember the day I realized I could finally,

FINALLY breathe out of both nostrils! That was a huge momentthat I achieved because of my fast (I had been plugged up foryears!). So, make sure you are taking note of all the changes inyour breathing, your thinking, your body movement, your clothing, your moods, and yes, even your weight.

Did I say Ten Tips? Oops! I misspoke I have to add the eleventh, and MOST IMPORTANT Tip for Juice Fasting!

EXTRA! Tip #11: Transitioning To and From Your Fast

Hopefully, I have accurately portrayed the need for planning yourfast in order to be the most successful. If you have read throughthe previous ten tips and decided to jump in to the juiciness, Imgoing to ask you to hold on just a bit longer and plan a fewtransition days before and after your juice fast. Speaking fromexperience, I can tell you that it is HARD to move from corn dogs tocarrot juice! However, if you plan to take a few days before your

juice fast to cut out processed foods, you will transition into the fasteasier.

My suggestion: take one full week before your fast to make theswitch. During this week, do NOT eat out. Plan to make your ownfood each and every day.

Beginning on Sunday, cut out processed foods and meats fromyour diet and increase your water intake by 2 quarts/liters aday.

On Wednesday, begin eliminating all dairy items (milk, butter, cheese) from your diet.

On Friday, cut out the cooked food and increase your waterintake another quart/liter.

    13/51

By Sunday, you are ready to begin your fast! Feel free to adjustthose times and days as you see fit (you can even extend thetimeframe to two weeks instead of one), but understand that thissample transition plan will help make your fast much easier.

Now that you have planned your entry into your fast, its time to

plan the exit. G.B. Shaw wrote, Every fool can fast, but only thewise man knows how to break a fast." Depending on the length of

your fast, you should plan taking four to six days to transition backto solid foods. The key to success is SOFT fruits (e.g., mango, grapefruit, soaked dates or prunes), broths, soups, juices, andsmoothies for a few days after your fast to get your insides used tosolid food again. For more information on the foods you should andshould not consume when breaking your fast, visit this website.

    101 JUICE RECIPES!

Thats right101 tantalizing treats to turn on your taste buds! 101glasses of bodacious bountiful beauty! 101 joyful journeys into

Juicelandia! 101...well, I could go on and on but you get the idea!

For me, juice fasting is all about experimenting with a variety offruits and vegetables, so I invite you try things you may have neverconsidered before. You may find they become your favorite flavors!

The recipes are broken down into three sections: vegetable-onlyjuices, fruit-only juices and fruit/vegetable combinations. A quicksuggestion before you dive straight into the goodness: because ofthe high sugar content, you may want to minimize the amount ofstraight fruit juice you have during the day. For example, you may

want to have a fruit juice in the morning, have a fruit/vegetablecombo in the afternoon and a mellow green veggie drink fordinner.

The ingredients for each juice are suggested for you. Meaning, ifyou try a juice and find that you prefer four apples instead of thethree I suggested in the recipe, change it! The objective is to have

your taste buds dancing for joy, not to follow the recipe step-by-step. Add or subtract ingredients at will!

Speaking of ingredients, I have to clarify three more things: knobs, bunches and heads!

First, I will often write 1 knob of ginger for the juice recipes on thefollowing pages, and I know some of you will ask, Carla, WHATDOES A KNOB MEAN? Ginger can be an acquired taste for some.Even a small amount of ginger can be very potent; if you are notused to the spice, it may be surprising! So, the size of a knob ofginger is totally up to you. I usually add a piece of ginger about an

inch long to my juices. Be it little or big, throw in as much as youchoose!

    15/51

Second, let's talk about the word "bunch", as in "bunch of grapes"or "bunch of spinach." A "bunch of grapes" equal between 30-50grapes - when you pick them up, the stems connect them all andequate to about 2-3 handfuls of fruit. A "bunch of spinach" can bedifferent - if you buy spinach at an outdoor or Asian market, it isusually bunched together with an elastic band at the stems, andthat whole bunch is what you will use for one juice. However, a lotof stores only sell spinach by the bagful. If that were the case in

your area, you would juice an entire bag for one recipe. Again, these are only my suggestions. If you feel that a half bag of spinachsuits your taste buds...use that instead!

Lastly, a "head of celery" is the whole kit and kaboodle! Celery isconnected at the bottom by a root, and all the stalks connectedmake one whole head of celery. If I refer to a "half head of celery" in

a recipe, you know to use only half of the whole thing.

Okay, enough preambles! Time to jump in and enjoy the juicerecipes!

    JUICING FAQS

How much juice should I expect to drink in one day?On your juice fast, it is typically suggested that you drink between64-96 ounces (2-3 liters) of juice daily. That is between 2-3

quart/liter-sized mason jars of juice. However, do not feel as if youare restricted to a certain quantity! If you feel like you want more

juiceDRINK MORE JUICE! You will also need to drink lots ofwater (2-4 liters or more) in addition to the juice you drink.

What about calories? Am I getting enough during a fast? Each persons caloric needs differ, however it is suggested thatpeople do not fall below 1200 calories per day (especially if you areexercising). You can use online tools, such aswww.nutritiondata.com, to assess how many calories you are

getting a day while fasting. The most important thing, in myopinion, is to listen to your body and pay attention to how you feel.Again, if you feel that you need more juice, drink more!

Can I juice the night before and take it to work the next day?YES! While drinking fresh juice ensures the ultimate freshness, itis perfectly fine to juice the night before, store the juice in therefrigerator and then take it to work. You will want to make surethat you seal the juice in an airtight bottle, jar or Thermos. Juices

can be stored up to 72 hours in the fridge and up to 10 days in thefreezer.

Can I drink store-bought juices instead of making my own?Store-bought juice has been pasteurized (heated) in order to extendits shelf life. This means you will not be getting as many nutrientsas you would if you were to drink freshly made fruits and vegetable

juices. If youre in a bind and need to drink store-bought juice, make sure you are choosing juices that have a low amount of sugar,all-natural ingredients, and no added preservatives. The brands

that are in your produce section not on the shelves in the interiorof the store are your best option (brands such as Naked, Odwalla,Bolthouse Farms, etc.). Make sure you read the labels carefullyand avoid any excess preservatives.

    48

    49/51

How much does it cost to juice? The average cost for produce for a juice fast is usually $60 - $120per week, depending on where you obtain your produce. If you arelooking for a way to juice on a budget, you may want to look aroundfor inexpensive options. For example, Wal-Mart has reasonablypriced organic fruits and vegetables, and I have found an abundantrange of produce at my local Asian market for much less than theneighborhood supermarket. You can also look into CommunitySupported Agriculture (CSA), which has become a popular way forconsumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer.

Can I juice the stems and peels?Absolutely! Stems have a lot of fluid in them and will yield more

juice for you. As for the peels of vegetables and fruit, its totally upto you. I would try a juice with and without the peel to see which

you like better. Whether you use the stems or peels, make sure youwash your produce thoroughly.

What do I do with the pulp after juicing? Many people feel that throwing away the pulp post-juice is a waste.Luckily, there are lots of options you have if you want to keep thepulp that juicing produces. You can freeze the pulp until after youhave finished juicing, and then can use it in soups, stews, smoothies, breads, and crackers. After a while, you will find that

you have a lot of frozen pulp! In that case, you can always ad it toyour compost pile.
