FUN FAMILY ACTIVITIES TAILOR-MADE FOR AUTUMN
Fall is a great time to enjoy the great outdoors. Beautiful fall foliage coupled with great weather compel many people to spend ample time out-doors before the arrival of harsh winter weather drives them back indoors. The following are a handful of actvities that are tailor-made for fall.
• Raking leaves: While raking leaves might not jump out at you as a great way to spend a nice fall afternoon, families often find raking leaves together soon turns into a fun day in the yard. Build leaf piles and let the kids jump in, and then do it again. When raking, encourage kids to collect some colorful leaves and set them aside. Once the raking is done, you can then enjoy making some
homemade crafts with the leaves you and your youngsters just collected.
• Apple picking: Perhaps no activity is more synonymous with fall than apple picking. Many apple orchards encourage customers to come by and pick their own apples in the fall. Once your family and you have scoured the orchard for the perfect apples, relax with a cup of warm apple cider before returning home to make some homemade apple sauce and, of course, a delicious apple pie.
• Hayride: Hayrides are another fall tradition, and many farms offer relax-ing hayrides throughout fall. Younger children who may tire if asked to patrol an apple orchard for apples might find a hayride is more their speed. Some farms may even allow customers to walk the grounds and visit the animals on the premises.
• Corn maze: Visiting a corn maze is another activity that many people instantly associate with fall. Some farmers transform their cornfields into corn mazes once the temperatures dip, and such mazes can be fun for adults and children alike. Though adolescents can often be trusted to find their way through corn mazes, younger kids should be accompanied by an adult.
• Pumpkin picking: Much like apple picking is best in fall, so is pumpkin picking. Rather than buying your Halloween pumpkin from the grocery store, where your options may be limited, go straight to the source and pick your future jack-o’-lantern from a nearby pumpkin patch, which will provide a much wider selection. Let your youngsters pick their own pumpkins and then spend the rest of the day carving them at home. And don’t forget to save those seeds, which can be roasted over an open flame to make a delicious snack.

Meet Ellen Garrison Jackson: 19th Century
Agent Of ChangeOn Columbus Day, Monday
October 12, at 1 PM and 3 PM, The Robbins House premieres its new interpretive program on the life of Ellen Garrison Jackson (1823-1880s). Using informa-tion from over 100 documents and letters only recently uncov-ered, Ellen will be portrayed by Maria Madison, Robbins House President. Ellen Garrison was the daughter of a Concord farm laborer who escaped from slav-ery in New Jersey and a free born mother who was a founding member of the Concord Female Antislavery Society. Ellen was also the granddaughter of Caesar Robbins, a previously enslaved Revolutionary War veteran.
It is from this legacy that Ellen was born in Concord, Massachusetts in 1823, the same year the Robbins House was deeded to the Robbins family. A “bright scholar,” she integrated Concord’s Bicentennial parade at
12, “beneath the gaze of curios-ity, surprise, ridicule, and admi-ration.” She went on to advocate for civil rights by signing anti-segregation and discrimination petitions and having a railroad stationmaster arrested for racial discrimination, 100 years before Rosa Parks ignited the 1960s civil rights movement. As an adult, deeply affected by her family’s struggles and the plight of freed slaves, Ellen traveled south to teach students of color in communities of freed people.
On October 12, learn more about Concord’s own Ellen Garrison Jackson. The program begins at the Thoreau Garden at the Old Manse, where Ellen’s brother John Garrison worked with Henry David Thoreau to plant a vegetable garden in 1842. The garden was a gift for author Nathaniel Hawthorne and his wife Sophia, when they moved to the Manse. We’ll then walk across Monument Street to encounter Ellen in the yard of her home, the Robbins House, where she will talk about her life in Concord and the South before taking us inside to see the house where she grew up.
This new program was made possible through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and is an important addition to the interpretation of Concord’s past. On awarding the grant, IMLS Acting Director Maura Marx stated, “The awards we are announcing today will fund a variety of projects to test creative solutions to museum challenges, to strengthen muse-um operations, and to support the stewardship of our nation’s cultural heritage.”

Sudoku
Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
Fun By The NumbersLike puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!

Unique Concert Video On Local Cable
During the months of September and October 2015 the communities of Berlin, Bolton, Boylston, Clinton, Holden, Hudson, Lancaster, Marlborough, Northborough, Shrewsbury, Southborough, Sterling, West Boylston, Westborough and Worcester will include in their local cable TVschedules show-ings of a professionally prepared video of “Annelies”, a dramatic oratorio based on the “Diary of Anne Frank.” Composer James Whitbourn and librettist Melanie Challenger collaborated in 2005 to create a sympathetic reflec-tion of Anne’s written words,
in which excerpts of her diary are woven together--- peaceful peeks of nature from her window contrasting with her sorrowful awareness of hungry children, Jews being arrested, and her fear of the family’s capture, in addi-tion to the sound of nearby church bells and folk songs remembered from her childhood. Particularly effective is the use of an exten-sive percussion section in the full orchestra accompanying the Assabet Valley Mastersingers with Artistic Director Robert P. Eaton.
Enjoyment of the concert may be enhanced by printing the words to be found online by searching ‘Annelies text’. Soprano Lynn
Eustis flawlessly voices Anne’s thoughts without benefit of a score at hand. Members of the Shir Joy Chorus of Westborough (Wendy Damoulakis, Director) sing portions of the concert with AVM. A brief introduction to the video by Dr. Joshua Jacobson of Northeastern University adds insight and includes a vir-tual tour of the Frank family’s hiding place for two years in Amsterdam. In the time between the 13th and 15th birthdays of Annelies Marie Frank she never allowed herself to lose hope in the basic goodness of people and could still find joy in the glimpse of a blue sky above.
Tom Morgan of Westborough WTV is videographer and pro-ducer in collaboration with Josef Reznicek of Bostonia Records for sound record-ing. Information about Assabet Valley Mastersingers may be found at www.AVMsingers.org or by calling (978) 562-9838.

Donate Blood With The Red Cross
During Liver Awareness Month this October, the American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to give blood and platelets to support liver trans-plant patients and others needing blood products.
Liver transplants are the sec-ond most common type of trans-plant with more than 6,000 per-formed in the U.S. each year, according to the American Liver Foundation. Liver transplant patients may require in excess of 30 pints of blood during surgery.
For blood donor Amy Slattery, the need for blood hits close to home. Her mother received a liver transplant and needed more than 70 blood products during the surgery.
“I donate to help others that needed blood like her,” said Slattery. “I donate in thanks to those who donate their blood products to help save lives.”
Volunteer donors like Slattery are the only source of blood for those in need of transfusions dur-ing transplants and other surger-ies. Donors with all blood types are needed, and especially those with types O negative, A nega-tive, B negative and AB blood.
To make an appointment to donate blood, eligible donors are encouraged to download the
new Red Cross Blood Donor App from app stores or text BLOODAPP to 90999 to receive a download link, visit redcross-blood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Marlborough Rotary Club Wants Your JUNK!The Marlborough Rotary Club invites one and all from all surround-
ing communities to clean out their attics or basements and get rid of their junk at the club’s Recycling event on Saturday, October 19, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the Whitcomb Middle School in Marlborough.
Since fall 2011, the members of the Marlborough Rotary Club have suggested that members of the greater Marlborough community could rid themselves of all that junk they were finding during fall and spring cleaning for a modest price per car or compact truckload. They created a one-day project to recycle all the unwanted computers, electronics, appliances, and more. The event, open to ALL communities, brought hundreds of carloads of household items to be recycled rather than added to landfills.
Almost everything that had been sitting around in attics, basements, or garages could be recycled at this Recycling Day event for just $30 per car load or truck load. Items include:
Electronics of all types – computers, CPUs, games, accessories, cell phones, VCRs laptops, cameras, cables, wires, keyboards, mice
All electrical equipment – small appliances, motors, shop equipment, heaters, fans, extension cords, lamps
Vehicle batteriesLarge appliances – washers, dryers, microwaves, AC units, freezers,
refrigerators with FreonYard and lawn equipment – mowers and snow blowers (no fluids)Metal and plastic – children’s toys, yard furnitureTelevisions – priced per screen sizeComputer Monitors - $15 each“We have been so excited about this event!” remarked Elaine
McDonald who started the event. “This project benefits everyone involved. People can rid themselves of all their metal and plastic junk; gain space in their homes for a very low cost; the environment is better for recycling all this junk; and the Marlborough Rotary Club Foundation will make a percentage of the fees to continue the club’s service to children and families of our community, literacy projects, clean water projects, and more.”
“The beauty of this project,” noted current Club President Michael Lashua, “is that it is both a service project and a fundraiser. Even when the funds raised were minimal, we knew that we had made a positive impact on the environment of our community.”
“The environmental impact keeps growing year after year. As of our spring recycling event, we have recycles 58, 291 pounds – or almost 30 tons! That’s huge,” McDonald concluded.
So, save the date! It’s Saturday, October 17, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the Marlborough’s Whitcomb Middle School.
Since 1922, the Rotary Club of Marlborough has supported the youth and charitable organizations of our community and the Rotary Foundation’s efforts to enhance our world.

Memorial Congregational
Church In Sudbury“No matter who you are or
where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here!” Join us for worship this Sunday at 10am. We will join together to sing songs, listen to the preachers’ reflections on the week’s scrip-ture and lean on one another and God in prayer.
Sunday worship service begins at 10 a.m.; youth from pre-K to 8th grade stay with their family in worship for the first 15 min-utes and are invited to leave wor-ship after the children’s moment to go to Discovery Kingdom where they use theater, art, cook-ing, games and more to further their understanding of the Bible. This fall we are studying the Ten Commandments. Childcare for infants and toddlers is provided every Sunday from 9:30 a.m. until the end of the service.
Many stories from our scrip-tures take place at a well. In addition to providing life-giving refreshment, communal wells are often the location of God-centered conversations that lead to deeper human relationships.
We gather on Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. seeking the same. Our time together is meant to build relationships and be refreshing. A variety of ideas are discussed including cur-rent events, theological ideas, and how we feel called to be “church.” We seek God through liturgy, communion, and other spiritual practices. Sometimes dialogue is inspired by sacred and secular music or video. We conclude with communion.
Everyone is invited to partici-pate as much or as little as com-fortable. Join us on Wednesdays at 7pm in the parlor of MCC located at the corner of Concord Rd and Church St in Sudbury. There is a seat at the table for you. For more information, please contact the church office at 978-443-3885 or [email protected]
MCC is located at 26 Concord Rd (across from Goodnow Library in Sudbury) and is open to and accepting of all persons regardless of race, ethnicity, gender expression and identity, sexual orientation, age, ability, marital status or financial situa-tion. All areas of the building are universally accessible including the Church School wing, which
is accessible by portable ramps present in the building. An accessible, gender-neutral, fam-ily restroom with changing table is available. For more informa-tion, please go to MCCsudbury.org or call 978-443-3885.
AVCC Presents: What Do Judges Look
For?On Wednesday, October 7,
the Assabet Valley Camera Club (AVCC) will host a presentation by Maureen and Todd Mathieson exploring what judges look for when they evaluate photographic images. All photographers will find this interesting.
Maureen, who is now the club’s historian, joined AVCC in 1994 and held the office of president for 4 years. She has obtained judges for the club and was liaison for international salon competitions and for the River’s Edge Arts Alliance. Todd joined the club in 2000, and he also served as president for 4 years. He coordinates the club’s annual Photo Ops day, with a specialty in black light or unusual, exciting set-ups. Together the couple has served as liaison to the Friends of
the Marlborough Public Library, which co-hosts an annual print exhibit.
The Mathiesons are both mem-bers of Photographic Association of America. For their service to the New England Camera Club Council and to local clubs where they serve as judges, last year they were awarded the MNEC (Master Member, New England Camera Club Council).
Their program is open to all, and admission is free. AVCC welcomes both new and pro-spective members. We meet at 7:30 PM the first and third Wednesdays of each month from now through June. Meetings are held at the Hudson Senior Center, 29 Church St., Hudson. For more information, contact Liz West (978) 263-2853.
