SECTION B: Transactional Writing Write 150 – 200 words on ONE of the following: 7. Imagine that a friend has written to you bragging of some rather irresponsible

or dishonest behaviour on his or her part. You are genuinely concerned about what your friend has done because you feel that his or her conduct is completely unacceptable. Write a sincere letter of reply to your friend in which you

• express your frank disapproval of his or her conduct; • explain why you feel such behaviour is unacceptable; and • suggest ways of making amends for what has been done, or avoiding such

behaviour in future. Try to indicate in your letter that you are not trying to harm your friendship, but that you are speaking out because of your genuine concern for your friend.

8. Write a formal letter to the Director-General, SABC-TV, Auckland Park,

Johannesburg, 2000, in which you give your frank opinion on the programmes that are currently being screened on the SABC's national television network. Give reasons for your opinion and make suggestions where necessary.

10. The following is an extract from a letter to your local newspaper:

In most cases, pornography portrays women as mindless objects who exist only to service a man's every sexual desire. It also spreads an insulting view of both women and men as being nothing more than animals interested in sex. J.H. Ferdinand Malmesbury

Write your own letter to the press, expressing your opinion on the topic of pornography.

SECTION C: Other Transactional Writing Write 50 – 100 words on ONE of the following: 11. The following is part of a report that appeared in a local newspaper:

GOVERNMENT MUST DO SOMETHING About 15 000 people were killed on South Africa's roads during last year – that's 42 a day. It's almost as big a scourge as Aids, but neither road users nor the government seem capable of doing anything about it. "Efforts to make South African roads safer during the recent year-end holiday season have failed," said Ian Auret, chairman of the Active Road Safety Committee. "It's a scenario that repeats itself year after year. What is needed is a change of attitude and approach to safer roads by government. Their efforts are ineffective and steps need to be taken urgently to combat this ongoing problem." Auret pointed out that much was made of the death toll during holiday periods, but that it was the same throughout the year. Here are his five suggestions for doing something about it – perhaps somebody in government might like to read them: …

Now provide the 5 suggestions that you think Ian Auret might have made to government. Write them out as they would have appeared at the end of the above newspaper report, i.e. in five short paragraphs. (Do not write out the portion of the report given above.)

12. Your young son has been ill for a number of days and, as you cannot get off

work, a kind neighbour has offered to drive or take your son to the doctor and home again.

Write a brief explanatory letter to the doctor telling him about when your son began to feel ill, the symptoms (signs of an illness) and the treatment you have provided so far.

13. The station commander of your local police station has become very

concerned about the growing number of people who have been mugged (attacked and robbed) in your area. He decides to draw up a pamphlet which is to be distributed to every household in your community and which gives advice on how to avoid being mugged.

Draft that pamphlet.
