Adjustable Operating Range — Totalspan within which the contacts can beadjusted to trip and reset.Trip Setting — Higher pressure setting atwhich value the contacts transfer fromtheir normal state to a changed state.Reset Setting — Lower pressure settingat which value the contacts return to theirnormal state.Adjustable Differential — Differencebetween the trip and reset values.Minimum Differential — When thedifferential is set to the lowest pressuredifference between trip and reset.Maximum Differential — When thedifferential is set to the widest pressuredifference between trip and reset.Maximum Occasional SurgePressure – Maximum surge pressurethatcan be applied to the actuator. Surgesor transientscan occurduringstart-upandshut-down of a machine or system.Expressed in milliseconds, complexelectronic instrumentation is required tomeasure the varying amplitude, frequency, and duration of this wave form.Extreme surges that occur approximately8 times in a 24-hour period are negligible.
Maximum Line Pressure — Maximumsustained pressure that can be applied tothe bellows without permanent damage. The control should not be cycled at thispressure.Positive Pressure — Any pressure morethan 0 psi. See Figure 2.• Trip Setting — Increasing pressure
setting when contacts change state.• ResetSetting —Decreasingpressure
setting when contacts return to theirnormal state.
Vacuum (Negative) Pressure — Anypressure less than 0 psi, inches ofmercury vacuum. See Figure 3.• Trip Setting — Increasing vacuum
setting when contacts change state.• Reset Setting — Decreasing vacuum
setting when contacts return to theirnormal state.
psi — Devices listed are in gaugepressure units which use atmosphericpressure as a reference. Atmosphericpressure at sea level is approximately14.7 psi or 30" Hg.OperatingRangeAdjustmentScrew —This screw is used to adjust the trip settingby varying the force of the main spring.
Differential Adjustment Screw — Thisscrew is used to adjust reset setting byvarying the force of the differential bladespring.PressureMedia —There aremany typesof pressure media that are controlled.Examples include air, water, hydraulicfluids andother types of gases and liquids. The type of media and maximum systempressure will determine the type ofactuator used for the pressure controlapplication. See page 15-6.PressureConnection — Common typesof pressure connections used in controlsystems are 1/4" and 3/8" female pipethreads, and 7/16" — 20 SAE coppertubing.Contact Configuration — There aremany types of contact configurationsavailable. Bulletin 836 Style A and Cpressure controls offer a wide variety ofcontact configurations for both automaticoperation and manual reset. Seepage 15-11.

Theory of Operation
Applications for ControlPressure controls can be used to either control or monitor a machine or process. Figure 5 shows a typical control application. Here, pressure is controlled within predetermined high and low values. Figure 6 shows a typical monitoring application. Here, pressure ismonitored between a high and low value, signaling when a preset limit has been exceeded.
Bulletin 836 Pressure Controls aredesigned to open or close electricalcircuits in response to changes inpneumatic (air or gas) or hydraulic (wateror oil) pressure. Figure 4 is a simplifieddrawing of a pressure control. Thesystem pressure is connected to thecontrol at the pressure connection. Thesystem pressure is applied directly intothe bellows. As pressure rises, thebellows exerts force on the main spring. When the threshold force of the mainspring is overcome, it transfers themotion to the contact block causing thecontacts to actuate — this is referred toas the Trip Setting. As pressuredecreases, the main spring will retract, causing the secondary differential bladespring to activate and return the contactsto their normal state - this is referred toas Reset Setting. Varying the force of themain spring (by turning the operatingrange adjustment screw) determineswhere the contacts will trip. Varying theforce of the secondary differential bladespring (by turning the differentialadjustment screw) determines where thecontacts will reset.

Repeat Accuracy and Mechanical Life
Figure 1Repeat Accuracy Versus Mechanical Life Graph
Allen-Bradley controls are designed forease of setting to help minimizeinstallation time. Standard controlsshipped from the factory are set at themaximum operating range andminimumdifferential. By following this simple two-step process, the control can be set tothe specific requirements for eachapplication. See Figure 7.
Step 1 — Adjust Trip SettingThe trip setting is set by turning theoperating range adjustment screw. Turnscrew counterclockwise to lower the tripsetting, or clockwise to raise the tripsetting. The approximate trip setting isshown on the indicating scale.Note: Turning the operating rangeadjustment screw will change both thetrip and reset settings in equalincrements.
Step 2 — Adjust Reset SettingThe reset setting is set by turning thedifferential adjustment screwcounterclockwise to increase thedifferential, or clockwise to decrease thedifferential.Note: Adjusting the differential does notaffect the trip setting.

The design and construction ofBulletin 836 Styles A and C controlsprovide a typical repeat accuracy of+ 0.5% or better. Repeat accuracy isbased on percent of maximum range, evaluated from test data and calculatedusing the formula per ICS 2-225standards.
Repeat accuracy and mechanical life ofbellows type controls is graphicallyillustrated in Figure 8. For generalapplications, controls selected where thecontacts operatebetween30…80%of theoperating range and where the maximumline and surge pressures do not exceedthe specified values will provide excellent
life and repeat accuracy. For morespecific applications, it is important tonotethat the controls are designed to operatebelow or above these values. However, there may be a small trade-off betweenthe factors of repeat accuracy andmechanical life.

ModificationsContact Blocks ➊ — Trip pressure-indicating scales are supplied on controls with standard contact block.
➊ Contact blocks not available for field conversion or replacement.➋ Minimum specified differential value approximately doubles.➌ Manual reset devices cannot be supplied with an adjustable differential. Inherent differential is approximately three times the differential
of the corresponding adjustable differential control.➍ Available only for replacement of complete open type control in an existing Type 1 or 4 & 13 enclosure. Replacement in a Type 7 & 9 enclosure
is not available because it would void UL and CSA.➎ Type 7 & 9 enclosures for manual reset devices are not also rated Type 4 & 13.
Note: NEMA does not rate contacts to switch low voltage and current. Bulletin 836 Styles A and C Pressure Controls are suppliedwith silver contacts. The devices are designed to deliver high force snap action to the contacts. This provides exceptional contactfidelity at 24V DC I/O card current level entry when the control is protected in a suitable enclosure for the surrounding environment.

Quality analog “Test” ➋ gauges are usedwhen applying requested factory settingsto these rugged industrial grade pressurecontrols. (Gauges are calibrated and theaccuracy is traceable to National Bureauof Standards.) The actual requestedsetting is applied to the control by readingthe set point directly from the test gaugebeing used. However, traceable gaugetolerance variance between source anduser, and possible severe shock duringshipping and installation, may contributeto the factory settings deviating slightlyfrom the specified values. Slightrecalibration can easily be accomplishedupon final installation to meet specificrequirements for the more demandingapplications. Bulletin 836 Refrigeration Controls aresimilar to Bulletin 836 Style A PressureControls. However, refrigeration controlsare constructed with additional pulsationdampening to filter out the severepulsations generated by reciprocatingrefrigeration compressors. Pressurecontrols not supplied with the addedsnubber function may result in reducedbellows life. The reduced life results frompulsations severe enough to cause thebellows to squeal at the pump frequencyor at the harmonic wave generated at
specific pump loading demands.Refrigeration controls are supplied asstandard with the pulsation snubber builtinto the stem of the bellows.Allen-Bradley heavy duty refrigerationcontrols have copper alloy bellows for usewith non-corrosive refrigerants. Thedevices can be supplied as single OpenType devices or mounted in a Type 1enclosure. Standard controls have7/16" – 20 SAE male threads for a45 degree flare fuel and lubricant fitting.Optionally, the refrigeration controls can
be supplied with capillary tubing. Thecapillary terminates with 1/4" N.P.T.F.tubing which is flared and supplied with afemale nut. To modify the standardpressure connection, add suffix “-36”(denotes 36") to the catalog number. There is no price addition for changing toa capillary type pressure connection.Example: Cat. No. 836-H11-XHC,modified for a 36" capillary connection, isCat. No. 836-H11-XHC-36.

Factory Options for Refrigeration Controls
Two Controls In One EnclosureIt is common in the industry to supply a low pressure Style L and a high pressure Style H mounted in a common, dual Type 1enclosure. This factory option can be supplied with the low pressure control on the left and the high pressure control on the right. To order, combine the two desired Type 1 catalog numbers into a single number. Example: Low pressure control 836-AL11-NKC-36, plus high pressure control 836-H11-BLC-36, becomes an 836-AL11-NKC-36/836-H11-BLC-36.
