In 2013, Barkerville’s Theatre Royal celebrates its 145th anniversary.

Every summer sea-son since Barkerville was first declared a provincial heritage site more than 50 years ago, a passionate troupe of actors, singers, dancers and musicians assemble in the historic town to re-create the joy and creativity of the original Theatre Royal, which was built in 1868. It provided much-needed

respite to generations of Cariboo miners, businesspeople, and families throughout the late-19th and early-20th centuries.

“This season, which marks 145 years since the original Theatre Royal building opened its doors, Barkerville plays host to a gala event acknowledg-ing the achievements of the theatre and the admiration and support of its audience,” says

James Douglas, Visitor Experiences manager.

“On June 15, friends, colleagues and the community will come together for a full day of celebrating Newman and Wright Theatre Company, the Theatre Royal and, of course, the original Cariboo Dramatic Association, whose traditions are lovingly carried on today.”

Newman and Wright Theatre Company will begin its gala perfor-mances at 1 p.m. with an expanded version of Danette Boucher’s acclaimed one-wom-an show Catherine Schubert: Lady Overlander, a stirring true story about one

woman’s treacherous journey to Barkerville.

The day will con-tinue with the musical Pathway to Gold at 4 p.m., and The LaFont and Ward Musical Revue, a variety show sure to enchant theatre goers of any age at 7.

Immediately follow-ing the 7 p.m. show, an entertaining auction of costumes, props, and performances for the benefit of the Theatre Royal will take place, and beginning at 8:30 p.m., more music, mer-riment, and mercantile opportunities will com-mence at Barkerville’s Theatre Royal, House Hotel, and Mason and Daly General Merchants.

During the day, and between shows, gala ticket holders can enjoy Barkerville’s award-winning his-torical interpretation programs, town tours, and a variety of dem-onstrations and shows throughout the site.

Gala tickets are avail-able for $40 (plus GST) and include admission to Barkerville, all three Theatre Royal shows, the evening festivities, and an optional seat at the Barkerville Heritage Trust’s annual general meeting.

For more information about Barkerville’s 2013 Theatre Royal Gala, or to reserve tickets, visit www.theatreroyal.ca, or phone 250-994-3340.

Robert Unger, who, was fined more than $860,000 for lighting a campfire on his property, which escaped and caused a wildfire, is currently appealing the penalty.

The forest fire occurred in 2009 near Kelly Lake, west of Clinton.

In May 2011, the Cariboo Fire Centre manager served Unger with a decision ordering him to pay the Cariboo Fire Centre’s costs for fighting the fire.

On April 9, 2013, Unger applied to the Forest Appeals Commission for an order requiring the government to produce certain documents.

He seeks production of the documents before the hearing of his appeal against a review deci-sion that confirmed a determination and cost recovery order issued against him under the Wildfire Act.

The hearing of his appeal is scheduled to begin on June 25.

A sunny and warm Ladies’ Day at 108 Golf Resort on June 4, saw 33 women come out to play a round of golf.

Cathy Waite was the first-flight low-gross win-ner, with Heather Matsuda in second place and Linda Hames in third. Matsuda had a good game, as she had the least putts and split the $75 birdie pot with Waite.

Second-flight low-gross results had Leslie Bell on top. Ann Pinkney settled for second (a repeat of last week’s results) and Lorraine McCaffrey hung onto

third place for the second week in a row.Third-flight low-gross bragging rights went to

Sharlene Anderson for a second consecutive week, while Carol Plautz and Kelly Bucknell claimed sec-ond and third respectively.

Low-net winner in the first flight was Carol Ohlund, followed by Maureen Menzies and Patsy Wilkinson.

Second-flight leader was Eileen King, with Carol Lidstone and Corinne French behind her.

Millie Halcro was the third-flight winner, trailed by Lorraine Scott and Wendy Foster.

Lidstone and Scott were also flight winners in the contest for least putts.

The 100 Mile House Men’s Fastball League is struggling to get sched-uled games completed so far this season.

Rainouts and lack of players has resulted in having to either forfeit or reschedule games. The make-up games will be played at the end of the regular season before the playoffs start.

June 3Exeter Sporting

Goods slipped by Jakes Pub 8-7 in an excit-ing game that saw both teams have some big offensive innings. Paul Carey pitched a complete game and recorded six strikeouts for the victory.

Greg Parent also chucked six innings and struck out five batters in a losing effort. However, he helped his cause with a triple and 1 run batted in (RBI).

Jakes jumped out to

a 5-0 lead in the first inning and added one more in the second.

Exeter got on the scoreboard in the third inning thanks to a dou-ble by Chad Paterson who scored on Bryan Moorman single.

Exeter closed the gap to 6-5 in the top of the fifth inning with a four-run outburst, but Jakes took a 7-5 lead in the bottom of the inning.

Exeter brought three more runs across in the top of the sixth for their first lead of the contest at 8-7.

As the home team, Jakes, had last bats in the sixth but were retired in order.

Exeter’s Moorman had two doubles and a single for three RBIs and Cliff McNabb added a double and RBI in the sixth. Jay James made two stellar catches in centre field to snuff out rallies for Exeter.

June 4The Shuswap

Defenders got a c o m e - f r o m - b e h i n d 10-8 victory over the Sanford Dillman Hornets in another exciting game.

Jerome Boyce pitch four strong innings for the Defenders with three strikeouts, and he helped his own cause with a double and two RBIs. Kevin Neufeld took over the mound for the last two innings with one strikeout.

Hornets’ Bob Collens went the distance, pitched a strong game and recorded a strike-out but ended up taking the loss.

Shuswap took a 2-0 lead in the first, but the Hornets knotted the score in the second and grabbed a 5-4 lead after three innings.

The Hornets jumped out to an 8-6 lead in the fourth, but the Defenders came back in the fifth for a 10-8 lead and won when the Hornets failed to score in the top of the sixth.

Roy Christopher hit a double for two RBIs in his first game back with Shuswap, and Mark Boyce used his lightning speed to score four runs and recorded a single.

For Exeter, Rob Sanford had a home run and double for three RBIs; Brayden Sanford had a double and a single for two RBIs; Eric Sanford had a double; and Morgan Thomas had a double and a single.

June 6Exeter slipped by the

Hornets with a 13-12 victory with their last bats in the sixth inning.

The Hornets jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the third inning with a nine-run rally, and increased to 12-3 in the fourth.

However, Exeter closed the gap to 12-5 in the fifth and then scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth for the victory.

100 Mile House Tim Hortons owner Steve MacPhail says the June 5 Camp Day fundraiser was once again a suc-cess.

The cash from every coffee sold that day, as well as funds raised in several games, hot-dog sales outside, and customer, staff and volunteer donations all added up to surpass last year’s Camp Day fund-raiser.

He says the local res-taurant raised $5,307 to send two local children, who would otherwise not have that opportunity, on a once-in-a-lifetime camping adventure.

“This community is awesome. The sup-port we receive here never ceases to amaze us.”

Folks who donated cash were also invited to print their name on paper tents and cabins that were then posted in the store.

“Rent-a-Tent and Rent-a-Cabin dona-tions were up big time.”

MacPhail notes the

Canada-wide event raised $11.8 million this year, breaking last year’s Camp Day record of $11 million, which sent 15,000 deserving youth from economically dis-advantaged homes to a special Tim Hortons camp.

He adds the staff and the volunteers all had a lot of fun, and the res-taurant was packed with customers all day.

“A big thank-you goes to all our volunteers who helped out.”

Several local special guests served coffee alongside the staff to further promote the event.

“Their support also helps to make this hap-pen; much thanks to them as well.”

MacPhail notes he works with the prin-cipals at all the local elementary schools to spread the free camp-

ing trips around to disadvantaged stu-dents across the South Cariboo, and has done so for many years.

Running the games table was a fun way to help out for Colton Searls, left, Alexis Forman and Marly Anthony during Tim Hortons Camp Day on June 5. Popping balloons for prizes and counting the jelly beans were among the several fundraising activities.

Return your empty beverage containers to a participating Return-It Depot from now to Sept. 2, 2013, and in addition to receiving your deposit refund and recycling, you can enter to win a new set of wheels.

The grand prize: the 2013 Smart Car fortwo coupe, boasts low fuel consumption and low emissions, but offers impressive tech-nical features, such as enhanced agility and performance.

Last year, Gary Ger vais , f rom Kamloops won the grand prize. Gary recy-cled his empty beverage containers and filled out the winning bal-lot at General Grant’s Depot in Kamloops.

The second prize is two Vespa Scooters. The third prize is a pair of mountain bikes and a gift card to Canadian

Tire to purchase hel-mets.

“Just by recycling beverage containers last year, B.C. residents saved enough energy to power 42,000 homes, took the equivalent of 26,000 cars off B.C. roads, and reduced 94,000 tonnes of car-bon dioxide equivalent from being released into our atmosphere,”

said Sandy Sigmund VP Development & CMO of Encorp Pacific.

“Return-It to Win-It is a great opportunity for Return-It Depots to thank customers by offering them a chance to win great prizes.”

For more informa-tion and a list of all participating depots, visit www.return-it.ca/winit.

Gold Trail Recycling, at 694 Sollows Cresc., in 100 Mile House is one of the participating businesses.

Call 250-395-1041 for more information.

The company’s hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 9:30-4 p.m.; and closed on Sunday.

It was a whirlwind three days of per-formances for 100 Mile House Junior Secondary’s cast of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Jr., which ran June 6-8 at the school, but they got through it.

Thirty-six students were involved in the musical, which had two performances each day.

Interest in the play was so high teacher Lisa Dugaro, who directed the musical, formed two separate casts, so there were roles for the great talent.

She even went so far as to cast four differ-ent actresses for the lead role of Belle.

“The students had a great time doing the

play, although I think that six shows in three days may have worn

them out a bit.”A number of the

props may have looked

familiar to anyone who saw Beauty and the Beast performed at the

school in 2007. Dugaro says they retooled and improved a couple of

the old props, including Lumiere’s candlesticks, which were hollowed out and made to light up, and the book- case, which was spruced up and given casters to make moving it easier.

Dugaro says tick-et sales for each performance were

generally good, except for the Saturday mati-nee.

She couldn’t com-ment on the future of the school’s musical theatre program follow-ing the amalgamation in September of the Junior Secondary and Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School.

Stagecoach & Wagon Event took place May 25-26 in Clinton, as part of the Village of Clinton’s Heritage Week and 150/50 celebra-tions.

The streets bustled with visitors and resi-dents as an array of colourful floats, gaily decorated vehicles, entertainers and horses and riders wound their way down Highway 97 in the Clinton Parade. The weather, which had been threatening to dampen the spirits of the participants,

improved and blue sky and sun carried through May Ball Rodeo week-end.

After the parade, the last of the wagons rolled into the Palace Hotel grounds to join the stagecoaches and wag-ons that had assembled from all over the South Cariboo.

A newly restored heavy freight wagon from the Historic Hat Creek Ranch accompa-nied the Ranch’s original B.C. Express stagecoach #20 on the exhibition

grounds. The

coach was a regular visitor to the Clinton and the Palace hotels in the early days of the Cariboo Road, travel-ling from Ashcroft to Barkerville and back.

The Clinton Emporium attended with a chuckwagon rigged out with all the necessities for a success-ful roundup.

The Stella family from the Stella Ranch Bale Bed & Breakfast on Pavilion Clinton Road exhibited their 1903 doctor’s buggy,

which was in excellent condition. The Huber family of 70 Mile House brought a pony-sized covered wagon, and Gravel Creek Hay Rides of Horsefly displayed a big green canvas top hay wagon.

Buggies and wagons of all styles and condi-tion were in attendance.

A 35-foot flagpole was erected and a Village of Clinton flag unfurled to honour the occasion. Guitars and song around a campfire brought the fine day to

a close.Organizer

In 2013, the Village of Clinton is celebrating the 150th anniversary of its naming (after Lord Henry Pelham Clinton) and the 50th anniversary of its incor-poration. Events are taking place through-out the whole year, with existing annual events being enhanced and new ones introduced.

For more information on the year’s events, please view the Village’s website at www.village.clinton.bc.ca, or check out its Facebook and Twitter sites.

Stagecoach & Wagon event a success

Virginia Carnegie and her dog, Cheska, enjoyed the view from her dad’s stagecoach during the First Cariboo Stagecoach & Wagon Event that took place in Clinton on May 25-26. It was part of the Village’s Heritage Week and 150/50 celebrations.

Are you thinking of Selling or Buying?

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20It’s a good time to overhaul your approach to tness, Aries. If you have been thinking about scheduling a physical or getting a gym membership, do so this week.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21Taurus, you may have a dif cult time tak-ing sides when friends ask for your help in settling a dispute. Let your friends know you prefer to stay out of the squabble.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21Gemini, you are in need of some down time, so plan a weekend jaunt or a brief vacation to relax and recharge your bat-teries this week.

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22It’s normally hard to pull the wool over your eyes, Cancer. However, in the next few days you will be so distracted with other things that fooling you is possible.

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23Leo, take a few days to act foolish, throw caution to the wind and have a good time. If you don’t, there may not be another such opportunity anytime soon.

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22Virgo, the only way to get through a bumpy week is to keep your head down and fo-cus. Concentrate on the tasks at hand, and the week will be over before you know it.

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23Libra, sometimes practicality gets in the way of your imagination. Though this can sometimes be sti ing, you have to nd a balance between whimsy and reality.

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22No one can put your plan into action better than you, Scorpio. Stop making excuses and really get started this week. Don’t ex-pect immediate results.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21Sagittarius, you may not feel that some-thing you did is funny, but others are bowled over with laughter. Play along so you don’t come across as a spoil sport.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20Expect your schedule to become quite hectic in the next few days, Capricorn. You may want to tie up any loose ends now and use any free time to rest.

AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18Aquarius, a burst of energy has you ying through all of those little projects that you have been putting off. Once you are done, you may have to create a new list.

PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20Pisces, though you feel like you have just been going through the motions, others are actually far more impressed than you think.

For many British Columbians, June 1 marks the start of the summer recreation sea-son – a time to clean out tents and RVs or open

up cottages and cabins. Before heading out to

your favourite campsite or retreat, take some time to make sure your natural gas or propane

appliances are in safe working order.

Portable fuel burn-ing appliances should only be used outside where they are prop-

erly ventilated. Read and understand the manufacturer’s certified instructions regarding the safe operation and maintenance of your appliances.

The BC Safety Authority (BCSA) recommends people carefully inspect all gas equipment prior to use and install car-bon monoxide (CO) alarms in your RV or recreational dwelling. When purchasing a CO alarm, look for one that is certified to the lat-est Canadian Standards Association (CSA) requirements, and fol-low the manufacturer’s instructions regarding installation and main-tenance.

I n B . C . , portable propane appli-ances are required to bear Canadian approv-al, typically to a CSA standard. Look for this approval whenever you are purchasing propane appliances.

CO is a colourless, odourless, tasteless gas

that is produced by the incomplete combustion of carbon fuels, such as propane, natural gas, wood, charcoal, alcohol, kerosene or gasoline. When portable fuel-burning appliances are used outdoors, they are fine, but in an enclosed space, such as a tent, RV, cottage or cabin, CO can become trapped, creating a hazardous and potentially lethal environment for anyone inside.

Inhalation of CO interferes with the body’s ability to absorb oxygen, which can result

in serious illness or even death. Symptoms of CO poisoning can include light-headedness, head-aches, nausea, fatigue, chest pains, vomiting, convulsions, confusion and dizziness.

If you suspect you have been exposed to CO, turn all appliances off, leave the dwelling immediately and seek the nearest available medical attention.

To keep your recre-ational space safe, be sure to obtain all nec-essary permits before undertaking home improvements to

your cottage or cabin. Permits help ensure gas and electrical installa-tions are done safely and according to code. If you aren’t sure whether work requires a permit, contact BCSA for more information.

For more informa-tion about how to prevent carbon mon-oxide poisoning, visit the BC Safety Authority website at: www.safe-t y a u t h o r i t y. c a / c a r bon-monoxide.

Additional permit information for home-owners is also available at: www.thinkpermit.ca.

District of 100 Mile House council covered several business items during its May 21 meet-ing.

Gold Rush Grannies paradeCouncillors approved

the Gold Rush Grannies request to hold its annu-al parade on municipal sidewalks on June 15.

The parade is part of a national campaign by Canadian grandmoth-er groups who raise money for orphaned children in Africa and the grandmothers who have the responsibil-ity for supporting them

without the help of a social safety net.

The walk kicks off at Cariboo Mall, starting at 10 a.m., to the Coach House Square Mall. Later, a small group will walk in the Exeter Valley, with permission from the ranch owners.

Battery collectionC o u n c i l

endorsed Gold Trail Recycling of 100 Mile House as an approved depot for the collection of household batteries and cell phones, as per the requirements of Call2Recycle’s bulk col-lection service funding program.

The District received an e-mail from Call2Recycle, a pro-

vincial stewardship organization that pro-vides oversight of the provincial battery and cell phone recycling ini-tiative.

While Gold Trail Recycling is the primary recycling agent in 100

Mile House, it isn’t receiving funding from Call2Recycle.

However, if District council recognized the local company as the receiv-ing facility for this purpose, it

could receive funding. There are other busi-

nesses in 100 Mile House that accept bat-teries for recycling. However, it isn’t their primary source of income and, therefore, they don’t receive fund-ing from Call2Recycle.

Cobb endorsedCouncil endorsed

the nomination of Walt Cobb as the 100 Mile House – Williams Lake appointee to the Barkerville Heritage Trust for a three-year period, commencing July 1.

Red Friday ParadeCouncil approved

The Royal Canada Legion Branch #260-100 Mile House application to hold a Red Friday Parade from the Safeway parking lot to the Cenotaph on June 7, starting at 3:30 p.m.

Council noted the Legion must work in conjunction the District community services department to ensure the safety of partici-pants and the general public.
