To the Parents and Students of St. Patrick School:
As a class project, the 7th grade is teaming with the Tazewell County Right to Life to collect baby food, juice, and formula for families in need in our area. The food will be presented to Catholic Charities, Neighborhood House, Women’s Pregnancy Center, and other charitable organizations.
We would be very appreciative if your child could bring baby food, juice, or formula to school by Thursday, January 18. There will be a contest between classes, and the class who brings in the most food items will receive a special treat.
We truly appreciate your prayers and support in our efforts to provide for the nutritional needs of infants.
God bless,

Protocols and Procedures 2018 – 2019 Deadline Date: April 15, 2018
PROTOCOLS:
• A family applying for Spalding Scholarship assistance must be an active member in good standing of a parish in the Catholic Diocese of Peoria.
• The student[s] for whom the aid is being sought must be enrolled in good standing [or seeking to be enrolled] in grades K through 12 in a Catholic school located in the Diocese of Peoria.
• All scholarship assistance will be based on a family’s financial need objectively assessed. The diocese will use FACTS Grant & Aid Assessment Services to determine financial need.
• All scholarship assistance will also be dependent upon the recommendation of the pastor that the family is an active member of the parish in good standing
• If a student changes schools during a school year, tuition assistance grants will follow the student as long as the student is enrolled in and in good standing in a Catholic school in the Diocese of Peoria and the family is a member in good standing of a parish in the Diocese of Peoria.
• All awards are for one school year only. A family must apply for Spalding Scholarship assistance each school year.
• The number of grants and the amount of each grant for the school year will be dependent upon the funds available and the size and need of the applicant pool.
• Payment of Spalding Scholarship Grants will be made twice a year directly to the Catholic school a student attends. These grants will be applied to the family’s tuition obligation. Tuition assistance grants will be announced by the end of May 2018.
• If the student receives an Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship for full or partial tuition for 2018-19, (qualifications and application information can be found at www.empowerillinois.org), they are ineligible to receive a Spalding Scholarship, and any Spalding award previously granted for 2018-19 will be rescinded.
PROCEDURES:
• Families interested in applying for tuition assistance from the Spalding Scholarship Fund must complete a FACTS Grant & Aid Application. Filing online at online.factsmgt.com/aid is the fastest and most direct method of submitting the application and required supporting tax documents. A family may also obtain a printed copy of the FACTS Grant & Aid Application from the school that their child attends or will attend, and complete it according to directions. The application and supporting tax documents must be received by FACTS by April 15, 2018.
• The completed FACTS application, the $30 fee, and any required supporting documents are to be filed with FACTS according to their directions.
• Families must also request the pastor submit a recommendation to the Office of Catholic Schools verifying good standing in the parish.
• The application process is complete only when the pastor’s recommendation has been submitted to the Office of Catholic Schools and when a completed parent financial aid application, and required supporting documents and the fee, have been submitted to FACTS. Submit your application and supporting documents as soon as possible. Only completed applications which include supporting documents submitted on or before April 15, 2018 will be considered when Spalding assistance awards are determined.

Student Applications Begin January 31, 2018
Empower Illinois will begin accepting student applications for tax credit scholarships on January 24,

can be reserved January 2, 2018 only if donors have already activated their account.
• Details of the process can be found in the donor section of EmpowerIllinois.org.
• Additional information about the program from IDOR is available here.
State of Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship
Attention: St. Patrick Families: If you are a business owner or individual looking for a great opportunity to make a donation that gives back in so many ways, or a parent that would love to provide your child/children with a Catholic Education but do not have the resources to do so, please read on! Did you know that a very beneficial piece of legislation was just passed by the State of Illinois? The recently enacted legislation establishing a Tax Credit Scholarship is great news for donors who wish to contribute to St. Patrick School and St. Patrick families who qualify for scholarship funds! The Tax Credit Scholarship allows both individuals and corporations to contribute dollars to a scholarship granting organizations (SGO). The Illinois bishops hired the Empower Illinois group to serve as the SGO for all six Illinois dioceses. This SGO will serve as a clearinghouse that will receive the donation from individuals and corporations in order to receive a 75 percent credit on their state taxes. For example, a person making a $,1,000 donation would receive a state tax credit of $750. In turn, the SGO will use this money to provide private school scholarships for qualifying students. While corporations cannot designate where their contributions will be used, individuals will be able to direct donations to the school or group of schools of their choice. Qualifying families will also be able to apply for 2018-2019 full-tuition scholarships beginning in January, with priority given to families whose annual income does not exceed 185 percent of the federal poverty level. Scholarships will be awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis until scholarship funds are exhausted. More information to come, but key information about the program and application process is available on the diocesan website (cdop.org) under CATHOLIC EDUCATION category. We encourage you to prayerfully consider a donation or to check out the scholarship funds available-this is a wonderful way to promote and support Catholic education and St. Patrick School

Why do Catholics celebrate Sacraments?
© Copyright 2018 Success Publishing & Media, LLC
Helping our children grow in their Catholic faith. January 2018
Sacraments are “efcacious signs, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church” to give grace (Catechism of the Catholic Church). Grace is a share in God’s divine life. As food, rest, and medicine maintain our bodies, so the Sacraments
maintain our souls. Our life of grace in Baptism is deepened by
Conrmation. The Eucharist nourishes us and Confession heals us. Holy Orders and Matrimony sustain the Church. Finally, our souls are prepared for eternity by the Anointing of the Sick.
St. Angela Merici Born in Italy, St. Angela and her sister were raised by an uncle after the death of their parents. When her sister died without the Sacraments, Angela became a Third Order Franciscan to pray for her. She was inspired by a vision to found a teaching order. Initially, she was met with opposition; the pope wanted her to remain in Rome with a nursing order, but she refused and went on to found the Ursulines in Brescia.
Mary points to her Son Contrary to its title, the Hail Mary is actually a Scriptural prayer to God about Jesus. In it, we profess our rm belief that God became man and was born of Mary: “Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.” As a family, pray a Hail Mary and ask for the grace to know Jesus better.
“Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and reject not your mother’s teaching;” (Proverbs 1:8).
The Bible doesn’t tell us much about the parenting styles of Mary and Joseph, but we can guess by what we know of the adult Jesus. Learn from the Holy Family how to raise one, too. Nurture virtue. While interacting with people during his public ministry, Jesus demonstrated the virtues of patience, persistence, hard work, self control, and compassion. Encouraging these virtues in children will help prepare them for their own unique vocations. Nudge when necessary. At the wedding feast in Cana, Jesus was reluctant to perform his rst public miracle, but his mother knew that he was ready and capable. After a gentle push from her,
he created something amazing. Sometimes children need a
nudge to demonstrate their God-given talents. Trust God’s plan. When the angel revealed the plan God had for her life, Mary gave God her whole self to his purposes. Following her example, Jesus did the same. Teach children, through modelling, prayer and sacrice, to let God control the direction of their lives. Tend to your own faith. When Jesus was young, how his parents lived, how they practiced their faith, and how they answered his questions helped to form Jesus’ early understanding of God. Be sure your own
knowledge and practice of your faith is strong so you can properly inuence that of your children.

Mark 1:21-28, More than just a teacher
Jan. 7 – Epiphany of Our Lord (1st Century). Epiphany is Greek for manifestation. When they honored the infant Jesus with gold, frankincense and myrrh, the three wise men bore witness to the fulllment of God’s promise of a savior. Jan. 8 – Baptism of the Lord (1st Century). Jesus began his public ministry by getting baptized by St. John the Baptist. Jesus was free of sin, but he allowed himself to be baptized in order to “fulll all righteousness”
(Matthew 3:15). By his baptism, Jesus declared his willingness to fulll God’s saving plan. It is also at this time when God revealed Jesus as his “beloved Son” (Matthew 3:17). Jan. 17 – St. Anthony of Egypt (356). Born to a rich family around 250 A.D. in Egypt, St. Anthony gave up his riches to live a life of simplicity in the desert. Eventually, other monks seeking the same lifestyle followed him into the desert and he founded a community of hermits. He is the founder of monasticism.
Jesus was clear that he wants us to be kind to everyone. In the famous parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus told of a man who was robbed and left for dead. The man was passed by a priest and a Levite before a Samaritan man helped him. The Samaritan – supposedly an enemy – demonstrated true kindness. Jesus told us to do the same (Luke 10:37). Teach children to value people rst. When Ashley tripped playing basketball and missed the
game-winning basket, her teammates gave her dirty looks and passed as she lay on the oor holding her ankle. It was a member of the other team who was kind enough to help
her up. Encourage acts of kindness. Gerry noticed
that the new boy at school seemed sad. It turned out that Sammy’s dad lost his job and money was tight. Gerry began packing an extra
sandwich in his lunch for Sammy, sat next to him in the cafeteria, and played together at recess.
Both boys made a good friend.
I was mad! I emailed Kara’s teacher asking that he move her away from Joey, a boy who was distracting her. A week with no response and I was sure he was ignoring my request.
I wanted to re off an angry email, but instead waited for a reply.
When Mr. Heinz nally
phoned, I explained my concern. He explained that he has educational reasons for assigning seats and, while he tries to accommodate parent requests, his goals must take priority. Still, he had taken a few days to observe Kara and Joey and found they worked well together. He paired them for a geography activity and they did A-quality work. More importantly, he asked Kara if she wanted to move and she didn’t. She liked working with Joey. Clearly this was a thoughtful teacher. I hung up the phone and decided I would trust him to run his own classroom.
In this Gospel reading, we read that Jesus entered the synagogue at Capernaum with his apostles to teach. Most teachers would draw from the writings of other scholars for authority, and would begin, “Thus says the Lord…” but Jesus said, “I tell you…” As God, he already knew what the Scriptures meant without leaning on someone else’s teaching. Jesus taught as one who had the authority of God and that astonished his listeners. Even the unclean spirits who were torturing a man at the
Simple acts of kindness
synagogue recognized Jesus as “the Holy One of Israel.” Clearly, this was no ordinary teacher! Jesus showed his authority again when he performed an exorcism on the man. The unclean spirits had no choice but to obey him
when he commanded them to depart,
despite their reluctance.
What can a parent do? Jesus shows us that God’s
power and love are greater than any evil. Teach children that they can talk to Jesus about anything that happens, good or bad. At the same time, stress that Jesus is God and deserves to be worshipped and obeyed.
