    RABBI’S MESSAGE

NEW EVENING PRAYERBOOKS SOUGHTThe Ritual Committee has determined that we need new prayer books designed for the observance of Shivah. (The condition of our long-time books has deteriorated over the years.) These are paperback

books, which contain the appropriate weekday service for a Minyan in a house of mourning. For now, 25 books are desired; and their actual cost is only Six Dollars each. (At this price, we cannot offer a

dedication opportunity for each book.) To contribute, please send your gift of $6.00 or some multiple of $6.00, payable to CBJ-Rabbi's Mitzvah Fund. Please write "Minyan Books" on the envelope and send to

    P. O. Box 3284, Plymouth 02361. Thank you!

With the approaching holidays of Purim (March 9/10) and Passover (April 8-16), the Jewishpeople celebrate victories over enemies who would have destroyed us. How would it be if some pseudo-historian asserted that there could have been no victories because there had been no real threats in the first place? If there had been no Haman, then what of the heroism of Esther? If there had been no Pharaoh, then what of the Exodus? Such imagined denial, unfortunately, becomes very real in our own day and age when we turn our attention to the Holocaust. In late January, the Vatican announced in the name of Pope Benedict XVI that the excommunication of Bishop Richard Williamson (U. K.) was to be lifted and the bishop reinstated. (His excommunication originally had nothing to do with Bishop Williamson's recent denials of the Holocaust.) The Chief Rabbinate of Israel immediately cut all official ties to the Vatican. While the Chief Rabbis' protest may have been heard, a more effective criticism of the reinstatement, in my opinion, came from another place. In early February, German Chancellor Angela Merkel called on Pope Benedict XVI to make a "very clear" rejection of Holocaust denial, by not permitting Richard Williamson to return to his post as a fully qualified Bishop of the Church. Chancellor Merkel's rare and public demand came amid increasing outrage among Germany's Roman Catholic leaders over the German-born pope's decision. In an apparent reversal, a spokesman for Pope Benedict then declared that the Pope had not been fully informed when he made his decision regarding Bishop Williamson. Pope Benedict subsequently expressed "full and indisputable solidarity" with the Jews and warned against any denial of the horror of the Holocaust. In the meantime, several leading German bishops decried the reinstatement of Richard Williamson and called for it to be revoked. The issue is particularly sensitive in Germany, where denial of theHolocaust is a crime and Roman Catholic leaders have worked hard to restore relations with the Jewish community. "I do not believe that sufficient clarification has been made," Chancellor Merkel said. The Vatican moved quickly to counter her suggestion. By the end of the first week in February, Pope Benedict had declared that the excommunicated bishop would be eligible for "full reinstatement" only if he first recanted, that is, publicly and convincingly repudiated his denials about the Holocaust. While it is unusual -- even amazing -- for a head of government to become involved in a religious matter such as this one, I found the involvement of Chancellor Merkel to be powerful in its own right, as well as effective, in terms of calling upon the Vatican to "clarify its position." The vital issue here was not Jewish-relations-with-Christians and/or Christian-relations-with-Jews. Underlying these potential issues was what I call the "vital" one; and that is: the Truth. Holocaust-denial is not simply "another opinion" about the Holocaust. It is patently wrong, in error, a falsehood; and in the name of Truth, it is to be challenged and corrected whenever and wherever it is put forward as if it had any claim at all on the word "History."

MORE INFORMATION ON OUR 100TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATON

It has taken a committee of just a few to plan our big 100th anniversary weekend, but it will take the participation of our members past and present to make it a big success.

In response to our mailings, I have received letters and emails from members of founding families living far and wide who are all excited to be joining us as we reminisce as well as look toward the future of Congregation Beth Jacob.

Among the other festivities, the historic trolley tour scheduled for Sunday, May 3rd has been designed by Dr. Karin Goldstein, our historian, to give us a look back to when Jews arrived in Plymouth and eventually established homes, businesses and a house of worship. Their insight, hopes and dreams made us what we are today.

It is an honor for me to be your president at this auspicious time and lead CBJ into its second

century. We can all add our names and dreams into CBJ's history for generations to come.

Please join us for some or all of the celebrations planned. Invitations with details will be in the mail shortly. I encourage you to send me addresses of people we may have missed in hopes to include as many of our supporters as possible. Call me at (508) 224-1942 or email me at [email protected] with the information.

    Sisterhood

Brotherhood needs a president – please contact Arnold Gladstein if you are interested.

We are enthusiastic, spirited and excited. We plan to become an important part of Congregation Beth Jacob. It is the goal of the Brotherhood to take an active part of our community. We plan to raise money to provide scholarship support for our religious school students in need of financial help.

We will be having 3 or 4 more breakfast or dinner meetings in the next 8 or 9 months. We plan to continue to go bowling on the first Tuesday of the month. We hope to schedule one or two fundraising events to help achieve our goal.

    Brotherhood

Please join us and help support our needy students. We have 3 levels of membership:

    Supporting Member - $18

    Torah Member - $36

    Mitzvah Member - $54

    Make your check payable to:

    CBJ Brotherhood

    PO Box 3284

    Plymouth, MA 02361

    WE NEED YOU!!!

Our Sisterhood provides financial support and labor for many of CBJ’s activities and causes and needs your help. Even if you’re unable to attend meetings, your membership gives us the funding needed to subsidize these events. If your children are grown, you can remember the enjoyable holiday parties, which still continue to this day for our younger generation. What would Chanukah be without dreidels and candy? What would Simchat Torah be without our pizza party after decorating the Sukkah? What would a Purim carnival be without hamantashen? We also sponsor a Purim Carnival game. These are just a few of the many events Sisterhood supports. We also stock the kitchen in both buildings with all of the supplies needed. This year Sisterhood is even underwriting some of our 100th Anniversary celebrations. If it happens at CBJ, Sisterhood is there!

Please take a moment and fill out the membership form and allow Sisterhood to continue its mission. Dues are only $25 annually, and help support the CBJ community.

We need volunteers to provide an Oneg Shabbat. Contact Barbara Aharoni: [email protected] or phone 508-747-0805 for open dates. It makes Shabbat more joyful to be able to socialize afterward, and helps us to give a warm welcome to visitors.

Our KIVA loans have been almost completely repaid at this time, so we will soon be choosing another group of women to whom we will make micro-loans.

There will be NO Donor Dinner this year, so as not to conflict with the 100th Anniversary Gala Weekend. We hope that you will instead choose to participate in those events. Sisterhood will be sponsoring the Oneg after the Friday night service featuring Reverend Dr. Peter Gomes on May 1st. If you can help with that in any way, please contact Cindy Teles ([email protected]) at 508-746-5607.

The next Sisterhood meeting will be Tuesday, March 3rd at 7PM at the synagogue.

There will be NO meeting in April, so that all may prepare for their Seders.
