Modesty Is A Branch Of Faith

"When there is no haya left, then do as you

please. (Hadith from Prophet)

walking shyly. she said: "Verily,My father calls You thatHe may reward You for having watered (Our flocks) for

us." so when He came to Him and narrated the story, He

said:"Fear You not. You have escaped from the peoplewho are Zlimn (polytheists, disbelievers, and wrong-

doers)."

Zaid bin Talha reported that the ProphetMuhammad Sallallahu `Alayhi-wasallam saidmodesty and faith are companions if one goesthe other follows it - they go parallel hand inhand with each other.

The ProphetMuhammad Sallallahu `Alayhi-wasallam despite his great handsomeness wasthe most modest among all mankind. He wasthe most bashful- he was described as beingmore bashful than a virgin in her seclusion.

their private parts (from illegal sexual acts, etc.).

Imran bin Hussain narrates that the

Prophet(Sallahu AlyheeWa Salaam) said,

Modesty brings nothing but good.Modestyis part of Faith and Faith is in Paradise. But

obscenity is part of hardness of the heart andhardness of the heart is in hell. [al-Bukhari,

Muslim, Abu Dawood, and Ahmad]

The modesty of Adam

When he committed the sin he was trying to

hide from Allah because he recognized hehad sinned agains Him

The angels Enormous in size and number The carriers of the throne of Allah Between their ear and their shoulder is the

distance between the heavens and the earth.Allah these angel, who never disobey Him andcontinuously glorify His praises. These angelsasked Allah the purpose behind such a creationwhen they merely would transgress whereas theangels glorified Allahs praises:

30. and (remember) when Your Lord said to the angels: "Verily, I am

going to place (mankind) generations after generations on earth."they said: "Will You place therein those who will make mischief thereinand shed blood, - while we glorify You with praises and thanks (Exaltedbe You above All that they associate with You as partners) and sanctify

You." He (Allh) said: "I know that which You do not know."

)(31. and He taught Adam All the names (of everything) , Then Heshowed them to the angels and said, "Tell Me the names of These if

You are truthful."

When Allah proved the superiority of Adam

over them, due to the knowledge he

bestowed on Adam, the angels immediatelyglorified Allah and belittled their status and

realised their shortcomings. They knownothing except what Allah taught them:

32. They (angels) said: "Glory be to you, we haveno knowledge except what You have taught us.

Verily, it is you, the All-Knower, the All-Wise."

When the ProphetMuhammad Sallallahu

`Alayhi-wasallam would be sitting with a

gathering in his own home and when he grewtired he would get up kindly and leave, and

not tell his guests to leave.

'Ali so modest that when he had a wet dream

- he did not ask the ProphetMuhammad

Sallallahu `Alayhi-wasallam directly as he wasmarried to his daughter but had to go ask

someone else (alMiqdam ibn al aswad) to askthe Prophet (in Bukhari andMuslim).

Doing more than the soul deserves -

surprising myself that I could possibly do so

much good. I.e. giving $100 in charity to themasjid instead of usual $5

Committing actions which downgrades oneself in front of Allahand

people to below the level they are. I.e. Umar telling himself he had a lowly status before Islam before

entireMuslim congregation (in order to prevent any kibr). IbnMasood (Radiyallahu An Hum narrates that the Prophet

(Sallahu AlyheeWa Salaam) said, Be bashful before Allahaccording to His right to modesty before Him. They said, OMessenger of Allah, verily we are shy, praise be to Allah. He said,That is not it.Modesty before Allah according to His right to

modesty is that you perfect your mind in what it learns, yourstomach in what it ingests. And remember death and thetribulations attached to it. And whoever wishes for the Hereafter,leaves the adornment of this life. So whoever does all that is trulybashful before Allah according to His right to modesty. [at-Tirmidhi, al-Haakim, al-Bayhaqi, at-Tabarani]

1. Ar-Raqabah (vigilance) -Modesty that stems

from belief that Allah is watching me. And

Allah is watching you.2. Stemming from Allah's specific togetherness3. Resorting to Allah alone - Ibn Qayyim says

about this that this can only be reached by

some profound spirituality
