• Be realistic about the time you can commit

• Write down which hours are possible. Do they fit in with nursery commitments? Are they the same hours each day?



• Do you have the answers to the key questions?

• Does your product or service have a unique appeal and at the right price?

• How will you overcome any competition?

• Set out your aims and objectives

• Get advice from your local Enterprise Agency or Business Link

• Look out for free start-up courses in your area



• Consider an integrated PR, advertising, social media and events strategy

• Record promotional activities on a timetable wall planner

• A small daily effort goes a long way

5. Decide your marketing and promotional tactics




• Get a good website designed

• Setup a Twitter account in your business name.

• Create a blog and comment on other people’s blogs

• Is a Facebook Fan page relevant to your business?

6. Promote your business online




• You have 3 months to let HMRC know you have set up as a sole trader.

• Don’t get fined!• If you decide to form a

company, complete the necessary forms with Companies House

7. Get registered




• It is easier to note down every financial expenditure from the start

• Many expenses are tax deductable and allowances are available too

• Seek advice from an accountant or HMRC

8. Keep good financial records




• Delight your customers with your products and services to keep them coming back

• Communicate well and keep them informed

• Resolve any issues or complaints swiftly

9. Make the most of every customer




• Before you start up, assess your skills and remedy any that are lacking

• Providing your business can afford it, pay someone else to do your marketing, accounting, deliveries etc.

• Free up your time effectively
