10 Tips For Taking Better Baby Photos

Tip 1

It's always a good idea to be prepared for every eventuality when photographing babies. Make sure to have baby wipes, towels, rattles, drinks and food, etc to hand incase your baby needs pacified or has a little accident.

Tip 2

When your baby starts to get active and is crawling or toddling about, use burst mode on your camera to take a series of shots. Chances are one of them will be the money shot. This is also useful if you are trying to shoot a couple of babies together at the same time. Neither will sit still for too long.

Tip 3

Try something different when taking pictures of your baby. You can set your camera to black and white mode or even sepia. You photos will have an old fashioned classic appearance to them. If you have already taken a shot you think might benefit from this creativity, use a post processing tool such as Adobe Photoshop or Gimp (free) to change the appearance afterwards.

Tip 4

Use natural lighting for best results when photographing your baby. Setting them near a window will give you a nice effect. If you want to achieve a more balanced, evenly lit photo, you can use a piece of kitchen foil to reflect the light coming through the window back onto the other side of your baby.

If you have to use flash lighting when photographing your baby, then I recommend keeping a safe distance of about 6-8 feet. You don't want to upset your baby when you are trying to shoot a prize winning picture.

Tip 5

Newborn babies are best photographed in their diaper or with a towel wrapped around them. If they have a slightly conical shaped head just after they are born, you could use a little soft hat to cover their tiny newborn heads. This also looks cute in your family album.

Tip 6

Babies usually look really cute when they are photographed with another subject in the picture. Pets and older siblings work best and usually turn out being family favorites. You could also try photographing them in a basket, flower pot or other unusual object where you wouldn't normally expect to find them.

Tip 7

Never photograph your baby when they are tired, hungry, need their diaper changed, are just awake or cranky. You won't get the results you require and both of you will end up frustrated. Instead take photos of them after they have had their bottle and had their diaper changed. You will get more smiles when they are comforable and warm. Don't forget to make sure their little faces are clean.

Tip 8

If your baby is just beginning to sit up unaided or they can't sit up by themselves at all, you can still get a good shot of them posing while sitting up. Drape a white sheet over the back of two chairs. Set your baby on the sheet, while mom or dad sits behind with their hands holding the baby from behind through the sheet. If you get the white balance right, you shouldn't see them holding the baby upright in the photo.

Tip 9

Always have your camera to hand and create a whole album with your baby's “firsts”. You could include your baby's first toothy grin, crawling session, steps, Christmas present, birthday cake, Halloween outfit, Easter egg, etc. You could even capture their first haircut.

Tip 10

Use your camera's zoom lens to get close up shots of babies when they are sleeping. If you get in too close, you may disturb them and you know what that means. Set your camera to the highest quality picture settings and if you need to afterwards you can crop your shots nice and tight to achieve the best composition.
