How we teach children to read Is reading just about decoding? Hearing reading in school How you can help Common concerns Any questions? Opening of classrooms to look at the

Aims for this session.
Some definitions- A phoneme – This is the smallest unit of a
sound in a word. How many phonemes can you hear in the
word cat? A grapheme – These are the letters that
represent the phoneme. The grapheme could be 1letter, 2 letters or more. We call these Sound Buttons.
Phonics
Phonics CVC words are made up of single letter
sounds. c-a-t d-o-g m-a-t b-e-d
Blending and segmenting – splitting the words into their sounds and blending to read the unfamiliar word.

Tricky words

Making up your own mnemonic for tricky words, can help children to remember the spellings.
