Rule #1: Don’t do it

Text messages are:• easily misinterpreted because what is LOL to

one person may be WTF to another• too easy to blast off a snarky reply to the

misinterpreted message




Rule #2: Don’t send mad

Cool down before replying. • Take a quick reading of your Anger-O-meter. If

it’s reading high, best wait before pressing send.




Rule #3: Review the exact meaning of your message

• Could your message be interpreted in different ways?

• Does it sound like you’re being sarcastic or sincere?

• Does your phone’s autocorrect feature change “XOXO” to “JERK”?




Rule #4: Stay on topic

• Stick to one and only one topic• Avoid going down ratholes. You will not

accomplish anything if you are arguing about everything at once.




Rule #5: Don’t send before getting a response to your previous message

• It gets really confusing when you can’t match a response to a particular message

• Receiver tends to respond to the most recent message and ignore previous messages




Rule #6: Actually respond to messages

• Don’t just blast your own messages and ignore messages you receive. This is supposed to be a dialogue, not a monologue.

• Don’t reply angry but don’t wait forever either.




Rule #7: Avoid low blows

• Text messages can linger around for a long time and serve as reminders of how mean or thoughtless you were

• Plus it’s not nice. We’re trying to make things better, not worse.




Rule #8: Don’t rant

• This is text messaging, after all. It’s daunting to respond to huge rants with multiple points in one text message.

• Keep it simple with as few words as possible.




Rule #9: Make sure you’re texting the right person

• Your co-worker probably doesn’t need to know about your issues with your spouse in such dramatic detail.
