The dictionary definition of a
word
What is denotation?
The feelings and ideas associated with a
word; for example, silly has a more
positive association that stupid
What is connotation?
The word choices that a writer
makes; it can also mean how
carefully a speaker enunciates his
words
What is diction?
When writers choose words that all begin with the same sound, they are using this,
for example,“buckets of big blueberries”
What is alliteration?
Words that imitate the sound they name, such
as,Snakes hiss or bees buzz
What is onomatopoeia?
The point in the plot of greatest excitement, suspense, interest,
intensity, etc.
What is climax?
The part of the plot where problems occur and
challenges are faced as the story builds to the peak
What is rising action?
This part of the plot serves as the
introduction, where characters and
setting are introduced
What is the exposition?
All good story plots need this, and there are two kinds: internal and
external
What conflict?
This is the final portion of the plot where conflicts and problems are hopefully dealt with
