is on his property, but he’s had it checked out and it isn’t. “Either way I don’t really care, I just want my phone to work.”He says he’s given up complaining because each time it takes more than half an hour to get through to an operator and the problem isn’t fixed. “We had a friend who used to work for Telecom, and he said that the box up here is known as a piece of crap and it needs to be started again, but they just keep putting

Band-Aids on it.”Chorus says the faults could be for various reasons, including the box being too far away from a main transmitter, but that the problems are “clearly unacceptable”.Steve Pettigrew, of Chorus, says the transmission box in the val-ley is well-known to the company and they are working hard to find a solution. “We’re well aware of the issues and have tried to fix it in the past, but clearly there are still issues with it. We’ll find out what’s going on, it won’t be tolerated.”

January was the busiest month on record for the Nelson Mar-lborough Rescue Helicopter, with the crew attending 64 call outs.Last year was also a record year with 460 total missions throughout the region, a 28 per cent increase from the previous year at 357 emergencies. General manager, Paula Mud-dle, says the good summer weather, along with foreign tourists visiting earlier this year and Cantabrians returning in larger numbers to our region, could be contributed towards the increase in January mis-sions. Call outs included general

medical emergencies such as motor vehicle and mountain biking accidents, search and rescue operations and fires.

Most of the emergencies were in the three National Parks within the Nelson, Tasman, Marlborough and Buller areas.

We did it three and a half years ago for our favourite winter sport – now Nelson is prepar-ing to embrace another world cup, this time for our top sum-mer codeThis Saturday, the Cricket World Cup will officially start in Christchurch and Nelson is getting right behind the action with the Nelson 111 Cricket Street Party taking over upper Trafaglar St.In 2011, the same space was the venue for hundreds of Nel-sonians as they watched the All Blacks win the Rugby World Cup and many will be hoping to watch the Blackcaps get off to the best possible start to the Cricket World Cup in the same place. The street party will include food and drink stalls, activities for kids and a giant bigscreen for people to watch the game, and will run from 10am until 6pm.Just down the road the annual Market Day will mean most of Trafalgar St will be in party mode for most of Saturday.

On Sunday the city will at-tempt to set a new world record for the most number of people “doing the Nelson,” at Trafalgar Park from 11.30am.The “Nelson” is a cricket-ing superstition, referring to team or individual scores of 111, thought to refer to Lord Nelson’s lost eye, arm and un-known third appendage at the battle of Trafalgar. Tradition states that 111 is an unlucky score, so to mitigate that stand-ing on one leg or, if you are sitting taking both feet off the ground, is supposed to prevent disaster until the score moves on. The current record is held in England, where 2276 people

stood on one leg simultane-ously.On Monday, the action switch-es to Saxton Oval where the West Indies will play Ireland from 10am. It will be the first of three Cricket World Cup games to be played in Nelson.Cricket World Cup venues project manager, Markus Erd-mann, says the game is sold out and the ground is looking a picture. “It will look even bet-ter than the recent [Blackcap] game because so much more effort has gone into it, being a world cup game.”Deputy mayor Paul Matheson says the games will provide great exposure for the region.

Cleaning up Bridge St and gaining the confidence and trust of the Nelson pub-lic stand out as highlights for Nelson Bays Police Area Commander, Inspec-tor Steve Greally, who is heading to Wel-lington next month to take up a job as national manager of road policing. When Steve arrived in Nelson three years ago, he promised to target the drunken disorder that reigned on Nel-son’s Bridge St on Saturday nights, and he delivered on that promise. And while he takes a lot of satisfaction out of that “result” he says one of the biggest ac-colades for his 137 staff at Nelson Bays police is that “our public trust and con-fidence is among the highest in New Zealand”. “Bridge St has been a major focus and I think we have really changed the cul-ture there on Saturday night and Sunday morning. There are far fewer serious as-saults, whether they be physical or sexu-al, which is great.“But the police have served Nelson Bays very well in all areas and that’s reflected in the public trust in us. I am immensely proud of my staff. “I know they work extremely hard and I’ve seen them put in a lot of sleepless nights. They have just got on and done the job they believe in so they can make it a safer place for everyone.”Steve also identifies the downward trend in crime statistics, “a couple” of success-ful homicide investigations and “good

results with the Red Devils”, as other highlights. “The downward trend in the crime stats is pleasing and we have had really good traction over the last three years. But that will hit a lower limit and so we need to keep looking at ways to continually keep improving the way we do things and make gains - that will be one of the biggest challenges for the new area commander.” Steve says one of the keys to the police’s success over the last three years has been engaging the community and that’s something he learned quickly as an area commander. “It’s been a steep learning curve and I have learned so much about people. It’s not just about managing staff, it’s also about interacting with the people out-

side the police and in the community groups - they are the ones who under-stand the issues.”Steve says it was a “really tough deci-sion” to leave Nelson after three years but the new job represents a significant opportunity. “It’s going to be a huge change. As an area commander road policing is part of what I do anyway, but to have a sole focus on road policing is a challenge I’m looking forward to.“But it was still a really tough decision. My wife, Erin, and I love Nelson - the weather is fantastic, the people are great.“What’s not to love about Nelson. It’s go-ing to be very hard to leave.” Steve starts his new role on March 16 and says an new area commander for Nelson has yet to be appointed.

A perfect storm will hit Nelson res-taurants hard this Saturday night and many are bracing for what is shaping to be their busiest night of the year. This year Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday, in the mid-dle of the peak tour-ist season. It is also on the same day the Cricket World Cup festival and the an-nual Market Day take over Trafalgar St, creating even more demand for space at some Nelson restau-rants.Garry Ford, owner of Ford’s restau-rant and Panama, says both his res-taurants will be slammed.“We’ll be chocka. February is al-ways our busiest month of the year with a lot of American, British and German tourists around, and with the Cricket World Cup opening there will be even more pressure on us.”He has one simple message for men: “Book now because your girl-friend will not be happy if you don’t get a table on Valentine’s Day.”But that advice is too late for those hoping to get into some restaurants. Kevin Hopgood, owner of Hop-

goods restaurant, says they’ve been booked out for Valentine’s Day for several weeks.“Valentine’s is always really busy, we’re normally booked out a month in advance, but this year the climate has been busier and we’ve noticed it throughout the summer.”

He says, with the Cricket World Cup opening celebrations on Saturday it will be a “huge” weekend. “We’re really looking forward to it.”It’s not just the res-taurants in the city centre that are gear-ing up for a big night though. Suburban

eateries are also seeing good book-ings.Honest Lawyer manager India Curtis says they have two weddings booked in for Valentine’s Day and she expects the other tables to be snapped up quickly. “Generally, Valentine’s Day will be one of the first [weddings] booked up.”Styx Manager Katie Funnell says they will be full for Valentine’s, but still have some bookings available for those who haven’t booked yet. “We’ll be full, there’s no doubt about it. It’s one of the busiest days of the year.”

Nelsonians are being urged to give their old bras and linen a new lease of life in the Is-lands.A donation drive has been started by Be-linda Roselli, who runs her business Lav Kokonas to encour-age people to donate Bras and Linen to Ni-Vanuatu fruit workers, who will then organise to take them back to Vanuatu at the end of the season. She says, due to the sustainable way in which many Ni-Va-nuatu people live they do not have a source of income to access bras

and linen. She says, although not everyone on the islands wants to wear a bra there are many woman who have taken up the op-tion.“I’m not going in say-ing ‘you must wear a

bra’, that’s not my ap-proach. My approach is to listen to what the Ni-Vanuatu want, that’s why I always say to them ‘What would you like me to collect this year and you can take it back with you?’”

After a shipping con-tainer is hired it is the responsibility of the workers to all pitch in to pay for the shipping. To donate, contact Be-linda Roselli on 027 443 4128 or [email protected]

MUSIC FESTIVAL: The Adam Chamber Music Festival is over for another two years and festi-val manager Bob Bickerton said the thirteenth festival was the ‘best ever’ from many points of view. Numbers are still to be confirmed but it’s estimated that over 6000 people attended the concerts, free master class-

es and meet the artist sessions, with 50 per cent of the festival passes to attend all sessions pre-sold to overseas visitors.

CHINESE NEW YEAR: New Year is the biggest celebration on the Chinese calendar and Nelsonians are welcome to join in festivities on Sunday, Feb-ruary 15. The New Zealand Chinese Association Nelson branch is organising the event which will be held at the Vic-

tory Community Centre. The celebration will include a ca-tered buffet and an hour of performances from 4:30pm. Tickets can be bought from the NMIT office, the Nelson Multi-Cultural Council and the Vic-tory Community Centre.

BIKEWISE: Go By Bike Day is this Wednesday, February 11. Go By Bike Day pit stops in Nelson include 1903 square on Trafalgar St at 7am.

There’s a new player in the audio streaming game and it’s available at Beggs in Nelson.Bluesound is a new media product and takes streaming audio from your mobile device or hard drive and plays it in high definition quality through one of four pretty funky looking sys-tems.Beggs Musicworks owner Tim Babbage says the range is simple but so-phisticated and is of sur-prisingly good quality.“Most streaming devices are MP3, so lowest of the low, it’s like buying a meat pie from the diary. But this plays high definition audio, 24 bit 192k, so it’s like buying a gourmet pie from a chef.”You can run your Spotify or internet radio through the systems as well and you can even have mul-tiple devices in the house meaning different music from the same hard drive can be playing in two different rooms at the same time. “Or, have them all playing the same music if you’re having a big party,” says Tim. The four products are the node, power node,

pulse and a vault. The power node plays through a pair of external speakers and the pulse and vault have an internal speaker. There’s a free iOS and Android app to control each product in the range. As long as your mobile device is on the same network as your

Bluesound players, the app will automatically show them as available for streaming music and allow you to group them together.“These products are great for people for people who just love music. You can play any of your music in any room. You can have different things playing in different rooms and across different sources, radio, CDs or digital.”He says people are listen-ing to lower quality music because it’s convenient. “Here’s high quality music

that’s still convenient.”Prices for the products range from $800 to $1299. For more information or a demonstra-tion, visit Tim and his team at Beggs Music-works on Hardy St in Nelson.

World Record Attempt

COME DOWN AND BE PART OF THE FUN!

Join us for a Guinness World Record attempt to “do the Nelson”. This is a cricketing superstition which has people lifting one foot off the ground to avoid bad luck whenever the score reaches 111.

Let’s see if we can beat the current world record of 2276 people “doing the Nelson” at once. We’re also setting the world record for someone standing on one leg for the longest time.

There will be local music, food and festivities so don’t miss out!

Record attempts start at 12.30pm

The smell of hangi wafted through the air as visitors were treated to an array of international foods at the Whakatu Marae for the 2015 International Kai Festival on Friday. The Waitangi Day event drew large crowds which crammed in around both the marae and Founders Heritage Park.Visitors had the chance to taste a variety of Maori and New Zealand kai including hangi, boil-up pies, whitebait patties, fried bread and raw fish. A number of international stalls were also serving up traditional food such as oliebol, churros, curries and breads.

A long queue of people formed around the hangi pit as the baskets of food were lifted from the hot irons and dished up into paper bowls.Event organiser Carol Hippolite says she was overwhelmed with the reaction from visitors.“Most people who I talked to said it was pretty awesome and we didn’t need to change anything. They loved all the performances.”She says the event attracts a lot of tourists who like to learn about Maori culture. This year she had worked in with the Nelson Provincial Museum to develop display placards and pamphlets to hand out.She estimates the turnout was close to last year’s number of around 10,000 people.

Nelson beekeepers are enjoying one of the best seasons in 40 years with warm temperatures, timely rainfalls and pro-lific flowering resulting in bumper yields of high quality honey."It's a really excellent season with yields well above average," Moutere Beekeep-ing's Hector Urquhart says. "We are get-ting around 50 to 70 kilograms of honey from each hive, which is very good."I've been beekeeping here for 12 years and this year's right up there with the very good season we had in 2009-2010. But I think the quality is better this year - we have had pollen counts done on the manuka honey and it's very good."Hector says the heat, timely rainfalls and good flowering by key plants have com-bined to produce the perfect season."We have the nice hot days and it hasn't been windy. The manuka and kanuka and kamahi have also been flowering re-ally well and then we've had just enough rain to release the nectar," he says. Managing director of Nelson Honey, Philip Cropp, who is a third-generation beekeeper and started commercial bee-keeping in 1972, says "it's one of the best seasons we have ever seen". Although Philip says it is "too early" to put a figure on yields, it will "be well above average."

"The manuka has been flowing very well and it's our premium-priced product compared to other honey. There's lots of different grades of manuka honey but we'd usually get around $20 a kilogram."President of the Nelson branch of the National Beekeepers Association and Mountain Valley Honey co-owner, Mur-ray Elwood, agrees the "perfect weather" has resulted in "a very good season". "This season is pretty darn good and I've been beekeeping for 25 years and this

season would be in the top four or five."Hector says beekeepers are also benefit-ting from strong domestic and export markets. Demand and price have been high especially for manuka honey, which is the most expensive in the world.New Zealand's 4279 registered beekeep-ers, 27,106 apiaries and 452,018 beehives produce around 9000 to 12,000 tonnes of honey annually, with almost one third to half exported. Exports of honey are valued at around $81 million.

The newly-named Kohatu Park is gaining plenty of support from motorsport enthusiasts and businesses, as fund-raising and planning for the motorsport and adventure park near Tapawera, south of Nelson, changes up a gear.Plans for a motorsport venue on a 203 hectare property owned by Nelson businessman and motorsport enthusiast, Garry Adcock, have been in the pipeline for a number of years. But the project gained traction last year after a resource consent was granted for initial earthworks and infrastructure at the site and a board of directors was elected to steer the project. And now the board has launched a new website to publicise the project and started a membership drive to show that it has enough support from the community. Board member Dave McLeod says they already have about 300 members and are aiming to get 1000 by March.Dave says the support is critical to show the Nelson and Tasman councils that the Kohatu Motorsport Park should be included their 2015-2025 Long Term Plans, to be finalised in June this year. Associate membership costs $20, with new members eligible for $55 of discounts through a voucher system backed by Nelson busi-nesses. "That funding isn't going to build the park but it is important because it will show the level of support," Dave says. He says the serious funding for the project would need to come from major sponsors.Dave says the board has also received the first concept plans for some of the facilities at the park and he expects work to start soon on some of the "non-seal" tracks for motocross, supercross, rallying and off-road racing. Kohatu Park will be having on open day on-site on February 22. For more information about Kohatu Park and becoming a member, see kohatupark.co.nz

This year's Survivor Scooter charity ride may be a lot shorter in terms of distance than the origi-nal edition from Bluff to Nelson, but organiser Jason Monopoli is promising that it will be a lot more challenging.Survivor Scooter 5 will start at Hanmer Springs on February 18 when 25 riders on their 50cc scooters will set out on a four-day 350 kilome-tre journey. Although Jason will not disclose the route before the ride starts, he says it will "end somewhere on the north-west of the West Coast" and have an extremely interesting finish."It's going to start off relatively easy and then get more challenging towards the end. It's going to be fewer kilometres than the earlier rides, but a lot more fun.'Jason says riders, will cover some of the tough-est off-road tracks in the top of the South Island. If that wasn't enough, they also have to compete in challenges each day against the other riders with the winner raising cash for charity. "The challenges are going to be interesting this year. We have one called the Bear Grylls Chal-lenge, so that gives you an idea of what the rid-ers are in for."Jason says the ride is a fundraiser for the Nel-son Ark with all proceeds going to the charity. It is supported by the Nelson Four Wheel Drive Club which provides logistic support for the riders. Many of the riders in this year's Survivor Scoot-er are "repeat offenders", which Jason says is a testament to the popularity of the event. Two of those repeat offenders are Nelson couple Chris-tine and Andrew Clark who have also talked their friends, Rod Sharp and Janine Pomeroy, into joining them."It will be the third time we've done it and we're really looking forward to it," Christine says. "You get to see some incredible countryside and have so much fun."It's like four-wheel-driving except you aren't sitting in a cab. You get right into the country-side - sometimes with your face in the mud."You also get to go places you would never have access to and you are raising money for the Ark. The people who do it are great company too - they are all adventurous and have a good sense of humour."Although Rod and Janine will be Survivor Scooter rookies, Christine is confident they will be up to the challenge. "They both do adventure racing and Rod was in the army, so they'll cope really well. They'll probably handle it better than us." The event has already raised $1040 for the Ark after major sponsor Total Oil donated a new Peugeot scooter, which was sold on TradeMe along with a free entry into the ride. The scooter will be auctioned-off after the ride with the pro-ceeds also going to the Ark.

Monster Slide:After reading the comments on your "Your Voice" page this

week, I decided to add my two cents worth. I thought the monster slide was

a bit of a samozell. The organising was pretty hopeless and simple things like the gradient wasn't investigated proper-ly. However, my kids loved it. My mate's kids loved it and at the end of the day that's all that mattered to me. Do they have things to work on? Yes. But I for one hope they'll be back again next year and I'd happily pay to go again.Dylan (via email).

For those with glasses or contact lenses, a chance to get rid of them would probably be a welcome prospect and thanks to Dr Reece Hall, it’s now a possibility. Dr Hall has been travelling to Nelson for three years now, providing check-ups on his post-surgery patients and offering assessments for those interested in the operation. Recently, he has opened his own day surgery and is now offering the same services from a new, modern facility, at-tached to Bowen Hos-pital in Wellington. From the Bowen Eye Clinic, Dr Hall will still be making his trips to Nelson, offer-ing people who wear glasses the chance to see perfectly without them. Locals can head along for a free assessment where Dr Hall will run several tests to see if the surgery will help their eyes. Whether his patients are young people in their 20s wanting to throw away their glasses or peo-ple in their 50s tired of their glasses, the surgery can help those who are either short sighted or

long sighted, although it does work best for a particular group which is what the tests deter-mine. For people that want the surgery, all the assessments and post operation check-ups are done here in Nelson with just one flight needed to Wellington for the surgery itself. The surgery is virtually pain free and total-

ly blade free as the Bowen Eye Clinic is equipped with the latest FDA approved lasers. During the surgery patients are given local anaesthet-ic meaning they are awake but don’t feel any pain in their eyes. Dr Hall has received feedback from many satisfied patients over the three years he’s been coming to Nel-son, who have gained

more freedom now that their eyesight is perfect without the need for glasses or contact lenses. To contact the clinic phone 0800 69 20 20 or visit the website at www.boweneye.co.nz for more information.

Public meeting called for Victory liquor storeA public meeting on Thursday, February 12 will update the Victory com-munity on the issue of the Victory Liquor Centre. The store ceased trading after it was found to be operating without a current licence, but the store owner is still able to apply for a new li-cence. The meeting, organ-ized by the Keep Victory Safe group and councillor Matt Lawrey, will begin at 5:30pm at the Victory Community Centre, and will cover what has hap-pened to date and how people can make effec-tive objections to the store owner applying for a new licence.

Proposing less stressful thanks to new ringGetting down on one knee and asking your loved one to marry you is a stressful enough task, never mind trying to find the “perfect” engagement ring that they can wear for the rest of their lives. So, jewellers Yvon Smits and Allison Judge, of Jewel Beetle, have come up with a novel way to help people find the perfect engagement ring. They’ve created a “proposal ring”, in sterling silver with the option of gold plating, shaped to look like a diamond solitaire, with the words “will you marry me” engraved on the band. “Before a guy pops the question he can buy this ring, then if all goes to plan the couple come back here and work with us on the design for their ultimate engagement ring,” says Yvon.Allison says an engagement ring is a lifelong investment, so it is important to get it right. “For the proposal ring we wanted something that looked like an engagement ring but cost a lot less,” she says. “It’s a sort of ‘stunt double’ for the real thing and takes the pressure off the guy making the choice by himself.”In their ten-year business partnership, Yvon and Allison say they have seen plenty of nervous men in the workshop trying to decide what kind of ring to buy, and they’ve also had girls coming in asking for alterations on engagement rings that weren’t quite what they wanted. They hope the new proposal ring will solve those problems. They can be bought from Jewel Beetle, upstairs in Trafalgar St, or online at jewelbeetle.co.nz

Organisers of the Pre-49 Hot Rod Show last Saturday were thrilled with the turn out of cars and spectators. It’s the first time the show has been held in Nelson, and Founders Heritage Park made the perfect backdrop for the more than 2000-strong crowd that came to view the impressive hot-rod display. Organiser Sue Jones said the highlight of the day was seeing everybody happy and enjoying the display of vehicles that had come from around the country. Ian Lind, of New Plymouth, won both number one hot rod and top hot rod in the “Rodders Choice” with his 1932 High Boy, while Grant Hilton, of Hamilton, won people’s choice with his 1932 Ford Cabriolet.

Liquid Laundromat opened in Stoke in October 2014. The New Zealand-owned Liquid Self Service Laundromat has 26 stores throughout the country and is the only Laundromat chain to offer the latest smart key payment technology! Using smart keys is simple and fuss free, no more fumbling in your wallet for coins or having to get money out - simply purchase a reloadable key next door at The Stoke Discounter Dairy for $3, load it with whatever value you choose and clip it on your key ring, ready to use whenever you like. All services at Liquid Self Service Laundromat are very affordable - with washing from just $4 and a special deal on dryers from $3 for 20 minutes which will dry up to 4 loads of washing. The eco-friendly washing machines come in 8kg and 22kg sizes - with the large washers ideal for bulky, heavy duty items like feather duvets, mink blankets, sports gear and curtains. Why pay up to $40 for your duvet to be dry-cleaned when you can pay only $10 and wash 2 Duvets, Mink Blankets, etc, in our bigger 22kg washers. As the washing machines lock during use it is safe to load your machine, then go shopping or have coffee across the road while you wait. What’s more, your smart key can be used at any Liquid Self Service Laundromat nationwide.www.liquidlaundromats.co.nz

It’s been just over 2 months since Peter and Julie Loftus took over the Verdict and already you can see good things starting to happen. There is the new signage, new menu on the way and also changes to wine and beer lists. While it’s been an challenge so far, coming from a non-hospitality background, Julie says they wouldn’t have been able to keep going without their wonderful staff. Peter and Julie may have come to Nelson to be near family, but The Verdict Staff have become an extended family of sorts, with Bar Manager Debbie Watson and Chefs Andy Gregory and Michael Johnston rounding out the loyal team. As well as the bar and dining room, The Verdict also features a beautiful outdoor eating area and gaming room with 15 new machines through the Southern Trust (come and try your luck), and will be available for functions, weddings and catering on and off-site. Come and check out The Verdict’s transformation or give them a call on 548 4499 to arrange your own private function. They’re open from 8am onwards - Monday to Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10am onwards, perfect for a late night meal, or platter to share with wine or beer.

Antonia and Andy Dale are the faces of Nelson’s newest bed store. The husband and wife team will be managing the store for owner Steve Whitley, and with several years in furniture sales under their belts, plus Antonia’s experience in interior design, they are looking forward to helping locals find the perfect beds, furniture and accessories for their home. The couple are also excited to be back in Nelson after time away working in Dunedin. Being a specialist bed store means Antonia and Andy take everything into account when they are trying to find their customers the right bed, and with a variety of sizes and budgets available there is definitely something for everyone. The majority of their beds are New Zealand-made with most including a ten year warranty and 30 night comfort guarantee. Sweet Dreams Nelson opened officially in December so if you need or want a new bed, now is the time to find it with great deals off beds throughout the store. Come and visit Antonia and Andy at Sweet Dreams at 46-48 Rutherford St and meet your new bed specialists.

Nelson Forests Ltdare proud to support the Brightwater Wine

and Food Festival

It’s a celebration of everything local and this Sunday is your chance to enjoy the splendours of the Brightwater Wine and Food Festival. Their success last year can be attributed to a fan-tastic turn out of stallholders and patrons, and the hard work of organisers, the Rotary Club of Richmond. The event is also hugely important to the community because of the funds it provides for local charitable organisations. Last year the festival managed to raise over $28,000 for these groups and this year will be no different. Pro-ceeds will be going towards the Nelson Marl-borough Rescue Helicopter, Wanderers Sports Club, Brightwater Rural Fire Force, Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade, St John, Brightwater School, Hype, Great Taste Cycle Trail Trust and the Nelson Volunteer Coast Guard.

With a ‘back to basics’ motto that successfully showcases the important elements of the Bright-water Wine and Food Festival, you do not want to miss out on enjoying a day of delicious food, fantastic local wine and beer and a display of boats from the NZ Antique and Classic Boat Show, set up to welcome the public into the event. Located amongst the vines of the beau-tiful Middle-Earth Winery, the atmosphere of the festival just can’t be beaten and is the per-fect venue for enjoying some of the area’s most talented musicians. If you have the moves, then don’t be afraid to show them off as you listen to acts such as Paul Madsen, Kramit, Urban, An-toni Neale, along with the Neale brothers and a set from the winner of this year’s More FM com-petition, Sound Stage.

Brightwater Wine and Food Festival-goers en-joy the local music and refreshments on offer at this popular event.

After a successful 2014 festival, organisers are keen to keep on improving the experience for the public, and this year will see an even bet-ter children’s entertainment area. Organised by Brightwater School and featuring plenty of fun activities from Blast Entertainment, parents can enjoy the fact their children will have a great time too. Make sure you are pre-pared to enjoy a full day of fun in the sun. Once again sunscreen and water will be pro-vided free of charge and people are encour-aged to bring along their own seating. Whether it’s a picnic blanket, deck chair, sun lounger, or a good old country hay bale, make yourself comfortable, then sit back and relax. Don’t forget your hat and if you want a bit more protection from the heat, a sun umbrella wouldn’t go a miss either. The Great Taste Cycle Trail is also a key feature of this year’s Brightwater Wine and Food Fes-tival, with those attending encouraged to use pedal powered transport if they can. Mid-dle-Earth is not only close to Richmond, but the cycle trail offers the perfect start to what will be a great day. The pleasant scen-ery and the fact you don’t have to find a park when you get there are all part of the joys of cycling, plus, there will be a secure bike storage area at the festival, available overnight should you wish to take alterna-tive transport home. Even if you don’t want to bike, you can still avoid the hassle of parking your car by making the most of the bus service to and from the festival. Buses will be stop-ping at all pickup points between Nelson, Stoke, Tahuna and Richmond; depart-ing for Brightwater at 10:30am via Ha-ven Road, Rocks Road, Main Road Stoke, Saxtons Field and Hope, while the second pickup will be at 10:50am from Songer St corner in Stoke and travelling via Main Road Stoke, Salisbury Rd, Gladstone Rd and Main Road Hope. At the end of the festival, buses will be making the journey

home at 4:30pm, 5pm and 5:30pm. With a great cause at the heart of this event, and a fantastic selection of food, wine and beer, you will kick yourself if you miss the Brightwa-

ter Wine and Food Festival this Sunday. To win free tickets to the event, simply email your details to [email protected], or you can buy them from any of the listed businesses prior to the event, or purchase them at the gate on Sunday for $20 per person. Tickets are available from Colourplus Richmond, Haven Realty offices in Nel-

son and Richmond, Wakefield Supermarket, Brightwater Motors, Reliance Beta Electrical, Specsavers, Village Cycles, Paper Plus Nelson, Brightwater Sprig & Fern and Hangar 58 for just $15. The Brightwater Wine and Food Festival will begin at 11am and runs until 5pm. For full de-tails visit the website at www.bwff.co.nz.

NelsonLocally Owned and Operated WeeklyTUESDAY 10 February 2015

It’s Nelsons biggest car/motor show and it’s back for 2015, offering families three days out to entertain the youngest to the oldest car enthusiasts. The Nelson Motor Show will see 400 cars from around the country converge on Tahuna Holiday Park, alongside a number of other displays and activities. There is so much planned for the three days that make up the Nelson Motor Show, thanks to the hard work of Steve Steele and his team of organisers, so get ready to make the most of getting up close and personal with mo-tor vehicles of all shapes and sizes, and a great range of entertainment. This motor show is not only an interac-tive and thrilling event for everyone; it has a pretty unique

way of doing things. For example, a truck load of fantastic prizes are up for grabs for anyone. From car trailers, a bed made out of a car, car batteries, model cars, oil packs and vouchers, to the mother-load of all prizes, three convertible cars that will be given away over the three days. The show will unofficially start on Thursday at Smugglers Pub and Cafe with a registration evening. Come along between 6pm and 8pm to reg-ister for the Bay Hop, Black Friday

Cruz, motor show or the Saturday night event, or come for a catch up if you’ve previously signed up, and those registered will automatically go into the draw to win a sound system sponsored by Smugglers. Friday ac-tivities kick off at 9:30am at the Stables Restaurant and Bar for the Bay Hop. Steve will be leading a cruise out to Kaiteriteri and then home via Mapua,

with registration and attendance to the activity earning one entry into the draw for the vehicle giveaway that night. At 6:30pm, the Black Friday Cruz will start. Eve-ryone is welcome to take part whether you’re regis-tered in the motor show or not, and those who com-plete the cruz and fill out a form will also go in the draw to win Friday's con-vertible. The cruz will fol-low a map that is available off the website at www.nel-sonmotorshow.com, start-ing at Speights Ale House

in Tahuna then travelling via Richmond, Stoke, Nelson and out to Atawhai, before returning to the ale house. At 9pm, the lucky winner of the Ford Capri Convertible will be announced by Steve’s good friend and major sponsor, Gareth Caldwell, owner of Speights Ale House.Saturday marks the start of the public show, so come along and view the pride and joy of owners from Gore to Auck-land. Kids will love the chance to play pilot as they explore

the plane and helicopter display, while the army, navy and air force offer an educational side for young people think-ing about a career in one of the defence forces. Last year, 16 recruit applica-tions were successful through the Nel-son Motor Show. There will be some impressive trucks, an engine destruc-tion and an exhibition by the fire bri-gade using the Jaws of Life. The show will also feature a car sale yard and a trunk and treasure swap meet. Come along and have a look at what’s on of-fer. If something takes your fancy, a bit of haggling might get it for a tidy price. Those registered in the motor show will also be looking forward to win-ning one of the 40 available trophies. Top award being Show Champion, followed by People’s Choice, however, they have the whole spectrum covered with trophies for 'work in progress', 'shit that’s different', 'unique modifications' and so much more. Things don’t end there though. Saturday night is jam packed with a selection of entertainment including live music from Kick, performances by Sun City Burlesque, Dynamite Pole Studio and special guest this year, Urzila Carlson. Taking the

place of Ewen Gilmour after his death last year, Urzila will be doing a tribute show in memory of Ewen, featuring the

auctioning off of an air brush portrait of him. Those who buy tickets will also go into the draw for a BMW M3 Con-vertible, a Red Bull fridge and products, a model of an AC Cobra or Interislander travel vouchers. Ewen’s limo, which he used to attend the Vari-ety Bash, will also be there on the day. Steve has brought it down from up north so peo-ple can take a look, remember one of New Zealand’s comedy icons and even go for a ride. Sunday is another chance for

the public see the beauty of American Muscle all the way through to modern day vehicle technology, but as the final

day, it will also conclude the Nelson Motor Show with the judging of the vehicles and prize giving, and the raffle draw of the Ford Mustang Con-vertible. A variety of refreshments will be available for sale too, with hot and cold drinks, food and the Speights Ale House stand. The Nelson Motor Show is held over the days of Friday 13, Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 February. The show is open to everyone, with entrance just $5 on the day. Tickets to Urzila Carlson’s show are $25 and can be booked at www.nelson-motorshow.com while raffle tickets are also just $5. The Nelson Motor Show wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of so many sponsors, and the support of so many local businesses is much appreciated by Steve and the or-ganising team. Entrance to the show is off Parkers Rd, with traffic management by Asphalt and General and free park-ing to all public cars inside the Tahuna Holiday Park. Nel-son Motor Show asks all to please support their sponsors as they make the show a reality. For more details visit the motor show website.

After 40 years of trying, Pat finally wins his mum's trophyMonique Bergman

For more than 40 years Pat Bailey has had just one bowls trophy on his mind, the one that was dedicat-ed to his mother – and on Sunday, close to tears, he finally won it.The Bailey Trophy was donated to the Stoke Bowling Club by his late father, Denny Bailey, 41 years ago, in memory of Pat’s mother, Lila. Pat has played for the trophy al-most every year since, only missing when it was either cancelled due to poor weather, or a lack of teams forced it to be cancelled. But on Sunday, he finally won it.“I have been trying to win the tro-phy since 1974 and I have been in some really good teams, includ-ing one with my late sister, Kath-leen Tomlinson, who won a New Zealand Championship, but I was a bridesmaid many times, so I am thrilled to bits that we won,” says Pat. Pat has been playing bowls for 52 years and during that time he has won many championships, but he

ranks Sunday’s win the most spe-cial of his career.Pat and his team mates, Colin Dela-ney and Monica Kennedy, won the prized trophy over 15 other mixed teams at the Stoke Bowling Club.At nearly 82, he says that he can’t play like he used to as his body won’t do what his mind is telling it to do, so needs to play with a me-chanic arm. He credited his team mates with the win.“Colin skipped, Monica played two and I led, both of my team mates played excellent,” says Pat.The first bowls Pat ever played was in a father and son tournament at Mapua Bowling Club, which they won, and from that time on he was hooked on bowls. He won over 30 club championships there before moving to the Richmond Bowling Club 14 years ago. “My father was a real male chau-vinist but his second wife made him change his mind when it came to women playing bowls, so he do-nated the trophy for a mixed team, in memory of my mother,” says Pat.

One of New Zealand distance running's most durable performers, Phil Costley, is chasing another milestone in this Satur-day's Buller Marathon. The Nelson College teacher, who has a staggering 32 national titles to his name, already holds the Buller open half and full marathon and veteran half marathon records, in the popular run through the Buller Gorge to Westport. On Saturday, he will be aiming to com-plete the set by attempting to break Da-vid Askin’s veteran’s marathon record of 2 hours 29 minutes 16 seconds, set in 1997. "It's in the back of my mind but I'm pretty relaxed about the whole thing," Phil says. "It also depends on the day - when you are running 42 kilometres

there are so many variables that anything can happen."I haven't done any races for a while so it's hard to know what sort of shape I'm in as well. I'll just take in one kilometre at a time and see how we are going.'Phil's last race was the Sun Run Mara-thon in Blenheim in November, which he won in 2hr 32min 41sec. Although he hasn't raced since then he says the experience he has gained run-ning "close to 20 marathons" and count-less half marathons "counts for a lot at

the tough end of the race". Although runners usually dread the final stages of a marathon, Phil says the last 10km of the Buller are unique because catching up with the half marathoners "takes your mind off how tired you are feeling"."It seems a silly thing to say but you get to 30km and it can get easier." Phil is one of 149 runners in the full marathon. Hope runner Paula Canning will be de-fending her half marathon title she won last year in 1hr 22min 36. There will be 868 runners in the half marathon run, 239 in the half marathon walk and 83 relay teams, taking the num-ber of entries to 1825.

and building Richard (Dick) Jones. Donated by the Day Family, Marsden House Trust. Dedicated on 25th August 2007.

Nelson’s rich history of characters, conflicts and celebrations is detailed

in this third volume of stories featuring discovery and survival,

heartbreak and triumph. These stories are about real people in real

situations and in some cases the truth really is stranger than fiction.

Whether you are picking this up for just a quick read, or are reading

from cover to cover, enjoy Snippets of History as a small glimpse

The SymonS memorial lampThe Symons Memorial Lamp is more famous for folly than its namesake. The gas lamp at the top of Trafalgar Street was erected in 1880 to honour local businessman

John Symons. But it was the workman in 1906 that smelt gas and lit a match that the lamp is most known for. The resulting explosion killed a fellow workman and destroyed the lamp. It was resurrected 90 years later.
