contractions Contractions are a very common way in which fluent English speakers, when they speak or write, are able to reduce two words into one. These new words are written like this:

• I am = I’m • I am a doctor. = I’m a doctor.

How to form contractionsTo form contractions, you have to replace letters with an apostro-phe (’). For example, the contraction of “I” + “have” replaces the first two letters of “have” (ha) with an apostrophe (I have = I’ve).

Contractions using “not”One of the most common structures of contractions is formed with the word “not” and either a “to be” verb, a modal verb (can, should, would, etc.) or an auxiliary verb. To form contractions using the word “not”, replace the “o” with an apostrophe (’).

• I do not see it. = I don’t see it.• She is not here. = She isn’t here.• We can not (cannot) go. = We can’t go.
