    10 Famous Active Volcanos

The volcanoes below are considered especially dangerous due to latest eruptions or due to beingincluded in the Decade Volcanoes list. The Decade Volcanoes list is a list of 16 volcanoes worldwideidentified by the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earths Interior (IAVCEI)as being worthy of particular study in light of their history of large, destructive eruptions and proximityto populated areas.

    1. Eyjafjallajkull, Iceland Icelandic for Island mountain glacier, this volcano is one of thesmaller ice caps of Iceland . The ice cap covers the caldera of a volcano with a summit elevation of1,666 meters (5,466 ft). The 2010 eruption caused enormous disruption to air travel across westernand northern Europe. About 20 countries closed their airspace to commercial jet traffic and itaffected more than 100,000 travelers

    2. Mount Vesuvius, Italy Located just 9 km (5.6 mi) east of Naples, making it the most densely

populated volcanic region in the entire world. Mount Vesuvius has a history of activity that makes it oneof the worlds most dangerous volcanoes. It last erupted was in 1944, but the most memorable eruptionwas the massive eruption of 79 AD, when it buried the cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii

    3. Sakurajima, Japan An active volcano and a former island . The lava flows of the 1914eruption caused the former island to be connected with the Osumi Peninsula. Thevolcanic activity still continues, dropping large amounts of volcanic ash on the surroundings. Earliereruptions built the white sands highlands in the region

The lava connected the island to the mainland Sakurajima

    4. Mount Merapi, Indonesi Fire Mountain is an active volcano located on the borderbetween Central Java and Indonesia. It is the most active volcano in Indonesia and has erupted regularlysince 1548. Thousands of people live on the flanks of the volcano

    5. Mount Nyiragongo, D.R of Congo An active volcano located inside Virunga National Park, inthe Democratic Republic of the Congo. The main crater is about two km wide and usually contains a lavalake. Nyiragongos lava lake has at times been the most voluminous known lava lake in recent history.Nyiragongo and nearby Nyamuragira are together responsible for 40% of Africas historical volcaniceruptions

    6. Ulawun, Papua New Guinea Situated on the island of New Britainit, it is the highest mountainin the Bismarck Archipelago at 2,334 meters (7,657 ft), and one of the most active volcanoes inPapua New Guinea. Several thousand people live near the volcano. There have been 22 recordederuptions since the 18th century

    7. Taal Volcano, Philippines The second most active volcano in the Philippines with 33 historicaleruptions. All of these eruptions are concentrated on Volcano Island, an island near the middle of TaalLake. Taal Volcano and Lake presents one of the most picturesque and attractive views in the Philippines

    8. Mauna Loa, Hawaii One of five volcanoes that form the Island of Hawaii and the largest

on Earth in terms of volume and area covered. The Hawaiian name Mauna Loa means Long

Mountain. Lava eruptions from Mauna Loa are very fluid; eruptions tend to be non-explosive and

the volcano has relatively shallow slopes

    9. Galeras, Colombia It summit rises 4,276 meters (14,029 ft) above sea level. It has eruptedfrequently since the Spanish conquest, with its first historical eruption being recorded on December 7,1580. A 1993 eruption killed nine people, including six scientists who had descen ded into the volcanoscrater to sample gases. It is currently the most active volcano in Colombia

    10. Santa Mara, Guatemala Its eruption in 1902 was one of the four largest eruptions of the 20th

century and one of the five biggest eruptions of the past 200 years

    10 Famous Inactive Volcanos

    1. Mauna Kea - Hawaiian for White Mountain, its the tallest of the five volcanoes located on theBig Island of Hawaii. Mauna Kea last erupted around 2460 BC, but that doesnt mean it wont

happen again in the future, especially if multiple earthquakes happen in the area.

    2. Sete Cidades - With an elevation of 2,808 feet and a depth of 1,500 feet, this stratovolcano

the term for tall volcanoes with multiple layers of ash and solidified lava is found on SoMiguel Island in Portugal. Its erupted twenty -two times since its inception date, estimated tohave been about twenty-two thousand years ago; its last known eruption was in 1880.

    3. Mount Teide - The highest point of elevation in Spain belongs to the Canar y Islands Mount

Teide, also the third- biggest volcano in the world. Its been fairly stable since 1909, thoughthere were reports of some seismic activity in 2003. The International Association ofVolcanology and Chemistry of the Earths Interior deemed i t one of sixteen Decade Volcanoes, which are monitored extra-closely because of their eruption history and proximity to areaswith large populations.

    4. Mount Ararat - The last eruption of this snowy, two-peaked volcano (the highest in Turkey)occurred in 1840, when a huge earthquake also caused a landslide. In the Bible, Ararat iswhere Noahs Ark landed.

    5. Solfatara - In the south of Italy, near Naples, lies Campi Flegrei, a volcanic area thats hometo Solfatara, a volcano that last erupted in 1158. Though considered dormant, the volcanodoes regularly release sulfurous gases through the many fumaroles on its floor.

    6. Mount Hood - In 2006, a volcanologist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) named MountHood the fourth-most-dangerous volcano in the country. Some in the industry believe its themost likely of Oregons volcanoes to erupt; its last period of eruptive activity was 170 to 220years ago.

    7. Agua de Pau - This volcano is also located on So Paulo Island and has been relativelydormant sinc e 1564. Like Sete Cidades, its a stratovolcano, but its origins are older(somewhere between thirty thousand and forty-five thousand years ago).

    8. Mount Rainier - One of the most beautiful backdrops in Washington is also one of the mostdangerous. USGS calls it a dormant volcano because its last eruption was back in 1894, buttwo of its characteristics are worrisome: many people live near it, and i t contains more glacierice than any other mountain in the forty- eight states. Thats why, like Mount Teide, its aDecade Volcano.

    9. Mount Shasta - Also known as the fifth-highest peak in California, this volcano actually hasfour cones thatve been created over almost six hundred thousand years. During the past4,500 years, Mount Shasta has erupted an average of once every six hundred years; the mostrecent eruption was about 224 years ago.

    10. Mount Kilimanjaro - Three volcanic cones make up the highest mountain in Africa: Mawenziand Shira, which are both extinct (meaning its unlikely theyll ever erupt again), and Kibo, which is dormant and has the tallest peak of the three. The most recent significant eruptiontook place 360,000 years ago, so theres not much concern about future eruptions, but somein the industry are worried about its collapsing over time.
