THE COACHES CLEVELAND BROWNS - ERIC MANGINIEric Mangini is entering his fi rst year as head coach for the Browns. For Mangini, it marked a return to his NFL roots, having kicked off his tenure in the league as a ball boy and an intern in the Browns’ public relations department in 1994. His tireless work ethic was just as evident in that fi rst year as it is today, a quality that led then-head coach Bill Belichick to add Mangini to the team’s coaching staff in 1995. In his 14 years of NFL

coaching experience, Mangini has been a part of six teams that qualifi ed for the playoffs, including fi ve that captured division crowns and three that came away with the Lombardi Trophy as Super Bowl champions. Prior to being hired by the Browns, Mangini was the head coach of the New York Jets (2006-08). In 2006, Mangini took over a team that had gone 4-12 the previous year and guided them to a record of 10-6 and a Wild Card playoff berth. The Jets started with a 5-5 mark before compiling victories in fi ve of their last six contests, including their fi nal three. Prior to joining the Jets, Mangini spent six seasons with the New England Patriots (2000-05). His fi rst fi ve seasons were spent as defensive backs coach (2000-04) before being promoted to defensive coordinator in 2005. In Mangini’s fi ve seasons in charge of the team’s secondary, the unit earned fi ve Pro Bowl selections and evolved into one of the NFL’s most successful defen-sive backfi elds. Mangini’s fi rst coaching opportunity came in 1995 as an assistant on the Browns’ staff. Ted Marchibroda retained Mangini when the team moved to Baltimore in 1996 and became the Ravens. Mangini was an assistant coach with the Jets under head coach Bill Parcells from 1997-99.

CINCINNATI BENGALS - MARVIN LEWISMarvin Lewis was named the ninth head coach in Bengals history on January 14, 2003. Lewis is in his seventh season as Bengals head coach, one year from tying Paul Brown and Sam Wyche for the franchise’s longest tenure of eight seasons. In Bengals head coaching victories, he also ranks third (behind Wyche and Brown). Lewis’ record over his six previous campaigns is 46-49-1 in the regular season, 0-1 in postseason and 46-50-1

overall. Lewis’ Bengals log includes an AFC North Division champion-ship in 2005, and he coached his fi rst fi ve years (2003-07) without expe-riencing a losing season, the club’s longest such streak since a six-year span from 1972-77. The club slipped to a 7-9 mark in 2007, and last year to 4-11-1. In 2002, the season before he joined the Bengals, Lewis led the Washington Redskins to a number fi ve defensive ranking, serving as assistant head coach as well as defensive coordinator. He came to the Redskins after six seasons (1996-2001) as defensive coordinator with the Baltimore Ravens, a tenure that included a Super Bowl victory in the 2000 season. Lewis had his fi rst NFL assignment from 1992-95, as line-backers coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Lewis spent 11 years coaching in college, beginning as linebackers coach at his alma mater, Idaho State, from 1981-84.

Cleveland Browns vs. Cincinnati Bengals Game No. 4 -10-

ERIC MANGINI SAID...

(On the Baltimore game) - “I talked to the team, I talked about the things we identifi ed going into the game, and defensively this was a very good running team. We were going to have to do very spe-cifi c things to stop the running game, and we didn’t do very well. We knew that they were going to use that to create opportunities for big plays. And they had multiple big plays, which wasn’t very good. They had separation between the coverage and the lineback-ers, and you’ve got to be able to fi nd ways to disrupt (Joe) Flacco. That’s what you’ve got to do, otherwise, he’s as effi cient as he was today. Then you look at it offensively, you have four turnovers, and they create a lot of points off of turnovers. You can’t do that. You can’t do that against anybody. You can’t do that against a team like the Ravens in Baltimore, as good as they are and as effective as they are. What we need to do is identify the things that we can do well, work at them, and continue to improve on them. That’s what we have to do collectively. It’s going to come from inside. It’s go-ing to come from the group that’s in the locker room. We’ve got to keep working to eliminate mistakes in order to move forward. In terms of the decision to change quarterbacks at halftime, I thought that at that point, D.A. (Derek Anderson) might be able to give us a spark. That’s what I was hoping to accomplish coming out of halftime.”

(On if he has the players needed to win) - “Yes, there are plenty of players in there that we can win with. The way that we need to do it is by addressing the problems that we have. It’s not some big mystery. It’s things that are correctable, controllable. We just didn’t control them.”

(On how he prevents players from having a discouraged at-titude because of last year) - “One thing is, a lot of guys weren’t here last year. A lot of the coaches weren’t here last year. A lot of the veteran players understand that it isn’t about what happened last year, it’s about what you do in that given season. Every single year you see radical shifts in what a team was the year before ver-sus what they are the next year. I‘ve been a part of those both ways. In a good way and I’ve been a part of it in a not as good way. If you look at the Dolphins last year, they were coming off a 1-15 season, they were 0-2 at this point. They go to New England, who had won however many games straight, but they consistently worked at what they were doing. They corrected the mistakes that they had and things changed. We were 0-2 in New England in ’01, I think we were 0-2. We were 1-3 after four games, I forget exactly what it was, but you work at it. You’re consistent with it. You cor-rect the mistakes. You’re diligent. Things change, but you have to do those things. You have to be able to correct those mistakes, otherwise the outcome’s not going to be different.”

(On Jamal Lewis) - “Jamal is a guy that you know over the years from watching him play, but you don’t know the guy until you actually work with him. He’s that term that I use to describe guys that take their job very seriously and approach it the same way every day, that are consistent. He’s a pro. What I’ve liked about him, too, is, and this is another characteristic of guys that are pros, is they work with the young guys. He’s always open to answer-

ing questions, whether it’s for Jerome (Harrison), or James Da-vis, or Vick (Lawrence Vickers) or anybody else. Sometimes the questions aren’t just running back based. It could be, what’s your recovery routine? How do you watch tape? The older guys, the guys with experience, can really help a team by sharing the things they’ve learned, hopefully preventing some of the mistakes they made as young guys. You’re always looking for that as a coach.”

(On how capable the Browns are of being a passing team when needed) - “That’s always the driving force, is to be whichever you need to be that week, against that opponent. The goal is fl exibility. Every single time you play a game, the problems that you face, the challenges that you face, they’re dramatically different, team to team. Sometimes it’s all man-to-man, sometimes it’s heavy blitz, sometimes it’s more zone, sometimes it’s dropping eight. You have to fi ght the battle based on the terrain, based on the opponent.”

(On what Shaun Rogers means to the team) - “He’s an outstand-ing player. He has very good strength against the run. He has very good awareness of blocking schemes. He has a high motor when he plays. That’s sometimes tough to do when you’re a bigger guy, to go play in and play out at a high level. You’re carrying a little bit more luggage than some of the little guys. I think he’s also a very effective pass rusher. He has a lot of great traits.”

(On if he prepares differently for divisional games) - “I don’t think the fundamental approach changes. The division games have, obviously, a different signifi cance from the fact that you have to win your division, or usually that’s the quickest way to get to where you want to go. Ideally, we’re preparing for each game in a very consistent fashion. I would look for the guys to have the same intensity, regardless of the opponent, but also appreciate the signifi cance of a division game.”

(On if he has made any personnel changes to shake up the team) - “To me, it’s not about shaking it up. The most important thing that everybody needs to understand is we’re going to play guys that play hard through four quarters. We’re going to play guys that play smart football. We’re going to play guys that do their assignments. It’s not about who’s the most talented. It’s who’s the best person to play in that situation, in that game. How you defi ne who the best person is, is by getting the most consistent, reliable, hardest working guys out there that really understand what it means to fi nish. That’s important to me. It’s something that I’ve stressed. It’s something that everybody understands. I went back and looked at our ’07 game against the Ravens, it was down in Baltimore. We were down 20-3 with 14 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Then it was like 20-6 with fi ve minutes left in the fourth quarter and we end up having the ball at the fi ve yard line with a minute left with a chance to tie. You keep plugging away. You keep going and things can change dramatically at any point in the game. You have to play each one of those plays the same way.”

BROWNS PLAYER QUOTES

DB Mike Adams(On the Browns’ special teams play) - “We take pride in our special teams play, and we feel we have one of the best spe-cial teams groups in the NFL. We can win some games on spe-cial teams. It’s a long season, but we have time to turn things around.”

QB Derek Anderson(On staying positive) - “I keep preparing and keep trying to be positive with them. I know in my mind that we have players in this room that can play and make plays. We’re 0-3, but we still have good players in here, otherwise we wouldn’t all be here.”

WR Josh Cribbs(On the offense) - “We have to start capitalizing, that’s a known. It’s evident. We have to start capitalizing. We have to start putting points up. I hate to say it. I hate to say that we’ll do better next week. I’m a little embarrassed about the way we played out there, the way I played out there. We just have to go back at it.”

(On Brady Quinn) - “I think Brady, he is handling himself as a professional. He is doing really good at taking cues, taking correc-tions, taking constructive criticism. He’ll progress.”

WR Braylon Edwards(On is he fi ts in a methodical offense) - “If I need to. We’ve had plays and we’ve seen things. In just talking to offensive coordinator, coach Brian Daboll, he’s showed me where I fi t. He’s showed me what I need to do to make this offense work. I don’t have a problem and doing that. That’s why we’re going out there, to get better at it.”

DB Abe Elam(On the defense) – “As a defensive group, we have to tighten up some of the things that are hurting us the last couple weeks and continue to try to improve on them.”

(On if it will be a challenge for the coaches to keep the team’s attitude at a level to win with) - “No, I think it’s just us, ev-erybody in the locker room having to stay together. We’re a family. We win or lose together. We’re going to take it to work on Monday, tomorrow, watch the fi lm and see what we need to do to improve.”

RB Jerome Harrison(On if it is diffi cult to keep a positive attitude) - “Not really. Of course it’s always better to win, but we’re grown men, so we

just have to watch fi lm and make corrections and not get caught up in the losses. We just have to play each week-by-week, each game-by-game and not get caught up in the record.”

LB D’Qwell Jackson(On whether the team is responding to Eric Mangini) - “Coach Mangini is one of the smartest people I’ve ever known in terms of football knowledge. Being 0-3 isn’t because of him. This is just a very tough time. But I know Coach Mangini will fi gure things out, and he will work as hard as he can to make us better. It seems like we practice well but then we have a hard time in the games. We’re just going to keep working at it.”

(On the Browns’ defensive play) - “It’s very frustrating to me because I am one of the team leaders here. It’s my job to keep people positive and make sure they keep playing. I know we have the talent here to win and to play better. We just need to execute. In the NFL, the most talented teams don’t always win the Super Bowl. It’s the teams that execute the best and make the most plays that win the Super Bowl.”

(On taking positives out of the game at Baltimore) - “You take the positive and you take the negatives out of this game. And you see the things you have to work on, and fi x them and take them into next week and continue to build on the good.”

(On the quarterback change at halftime in Baltimore) - “We’re pretty comfortable with Derek (Anderson) or Brady (Quinn). Coach (Mangini) makes the decision, and players play. You live with it and support what coach says. You just have to take one game at a time and fi nd the things that we need to work on and do it.”

QB Brady Quinn(On being taken out of game at halftime) - “It’s frustrating to not be able to fi nish what I started. I knew I didn’t have a good fi rst half, and I was hoping to make some plays in the second half. I always want a chance to make some plays.”

LB Kamerion Wimbley(On the rest of the season) - “All we have to do is go back in and keep working. Go back and see what we need to correct on fi lm. That’s all we can do as professionals. Keep our mind on our task and keep focusing and try to win games.”
