10-30-2015 pg87DO:I will be able to recognize the different types of waves, identify and define the parts of waves, as well as and explain their unique characteristics. EQ:What is the difference in wave types?Explain the similarities and differences between waves.

LWhat I learned about waves
Read pages 509 to 514 in the textbook
as an introduction to waves.
Question:With your table hypothesize what we are going to learn about during our unit on Waves.

WAVES!!!
WavesA wave is any disturbance that transfers
energy through matter or space
If a pebble is thrown into water, you would see waves moving outward from the place where the pebble entered the water. The energy travels through the wave.
5
All waves are disturbances that transmit energy. Energy from the pebble moves in a right
angle from the up and down motion of the water as the wave passes This interruption of the quiet, calm water is called a disturbance.
6
MediumThe material through which waves can travel is called a medium
Energy is also carried from the source by vibrationsA vibrating particle transfers its energy to a nearby particle and so on.*
7
MECHANICAL WavesA medium can be gas, a liquid, or a solid
A wave that needs a medium to travel is called a mechanical wave.
Water is the medium for ocean
waves
8
ELECTROMAGNETIC WavesNot all waves need a medium to transfer energyVisible light, microwaves, ultraviolet light, X-rays, infrared waves, and
gamma rays can all travel through empty space
9
Mechanical Wave ClassificationWaves are classified according to the way they move and the medium they use.
A wave that transfers energy in a direction that is perpendicular (at a right angle) to its medium is called a
transverse wave

CLOSURE:What stuck with you?-On a post-it note please write what stuck with you from our lesson on waves. -Hypothesize what we are going to learn next.
