Fire destroys Tempest homePolk, N.C. officials investigating causeby Leah Justice

A fire that broke out Monday afternoon completely destroyed a Golden Road home.

Firefighters were called to the home of Jeff Tempest, lo-cated at 1054 Golden Road in Columbus Township at 12:37 p.m. Monday.

Tryon Fire Chief Joey Davis says the house was a total loss. The fire also spread to some nearby woods.

Investigators were at the scene yesterday; firefighters were also checking the area to

ensure that the woods did not rekindle.

Columbus, Tryon, Saluda, Mill Spring, Green Creek, Sunny View, Polk County Emergency Services, the Polk County Chapter of the Ameri-can Red Cross and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office all responded to the fire.

The fire is currently un-der investigation by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the N.C. State Bureau of Investiga-tion (SBI). Officials from the Columbus fire department, the lead firefighters on the case, were at the scene with investi-gators yesterday.

When LLCA opened its doors Aug. 18, it gave the Lake Lure area its first school in a half cen-tury, cutting down long commutes for some who would otherwise attend schools in Rutherford, Hen-derson and Polk counties.

LLCA will also receive from the state an estimated $5,038 for each of the 34 former Polk County Schools, a total of $171,297 that would have otherwise been di-rected to Polk County Schools.

Miller and Chief Financial Officer Charlotte Sullivan said the dollar figures are estimates because of the state’s account-ing system, which quantifies the student costs through other avenues and then calculates a dollar amount.

The 34 former Polk County students who enrolled in LLCA this year is far below the initial estimates of 118. Using that estimate, the state reduced fund-ing to Polk County Schools by $594,501.

Miller said he expects the difference to be returned to the school system by the state.

“We now know that 34 (stu-dents) are really attending, so the

state will adjust us the difference in mid-October,” he said.

Polk County Schools’ funding for LLCA comes on the heels of several legal battles over the alleged under-funding of charter schools by other school districts in North Carolina.

On Wednesday, three char-ter schools filed suit against Asheville City Schools, alleging that the school system under-funded the charter schools by more than $870,000 over a three-year period beginning in 2006-07. The charter schools rejected a $500,000 settlement offer after settling with Buncombe County Schools for $345,000 earlier this year. Buncombe County Schools did not admit to under-funding the charter schools.

School districts and charter schools in Charlotte and other areas around the state have also been em-broiled in similar legal battles.

A handful of students living in Polk County will also be attend-ing charter schools in Rutherford and Henderson counties.

This year’s funding estimates for charter schools will be part of a $24 million budget the Polk County Board of Education will be asked to approve at its regular meeting Monday night.

Let’s send a NEW voice to Raleigh.

As a husband and father who works in the private sector, I know the importance of good jobs and schools for working families. I’ll help local businesses and civic leaders grow new jobs. Byrd joins CooperRiisJeff Byrd, former owner and

publisher of the Tryon Daily Bulletin, will be joining Coop-erRiis Healing Community as development director on De-cember 1, CooperRiis execu-tive director Virgil Stucker has announced.

Byrd, who was the chairman of the e-Polk Inc. PANGAEA non-profit fiber optic company for 10 years, the president of the Polk County chamber of commerce, the chairman of the first Blue Ridge BBQ & Music Festival, and president-elect of the N.C. Press Association, will now focus his efforts on the mental health recovery mission of CooperRiis.

“In this new position, Jeff will be responsible for philan-thropic relationships, attracting and deepening connections to donors and volunteers as well as being responsible for public relations with local, regional and national media,” Stucker said. “We are excited that Jeff is joining our leadership team. His optimism, sense of mis-sion and drive to develop and sustain meaningful relation-ships will make him an ideal first development director for

CooperRiis! ”“I am excited to have this

opportunity to help others,” Byrd said. “CooperRiis is one of fewer than a dozen facilities in the United States offering holistic, long term care and recovery for those with mental illness.

“I am glad to join the vision of replicating the CooperRiis model in many more commu-nities throughout the country to help solve the mental health care crisis with an evidence-based, cost effective treatment that shows recovery is pos-sible.”

The philanthropic inspira-tion for CooperRiis comes from Don and Lisbeth Cooper, who have raised $25 million in donations to build and endow CooperRiis. Given CooperRiis’ commitment to provide schol-arships to families in need and given the organization’s striv-ing to be a learning and growing organization, CooperRiis’ need for annual fundraising contin-ues to grow in magnitude. Byrd will be the lead staff person for CooperRiis’ annual fundraising

Democratic candidates support thoughtful implementation of our county’s Comprehensive Plan. Our 20/20 Vision Plan has been selected for

the “Outstanding Planning Award for Small Counties” by the NC Chapter of the American Planning Association. Credit belongs to the committee volunteers who

used input from thousands of our citizens to develop the plan. The Democratic Commissioners were very involved in the committee

meetings and deliberations.

… on the other hand, Republican candidates believe the plan recommends too much green space. It’s important to remember we currently have

6000 undeveloped subdivision lots.

Democratic candidates know what’s in the Comprehensive Plan and are already working on the next steps to put it to work

for Polk County.

… sadly, one Republican candidate admits that he has not even read the plan.

Keep us on the path to a bright Polk County future!

“A return to ethical and fiscal responsibility”Elect

david Moore, ted owens and tom Pack as County Commissioners

The current County Commissioners set a record high for the amount of property taxes collected fromthe citizens of Polk County last year! Do they plan

to spending all of this and more on the new DSSbuilding that is too big and extravagant?

We promise to be responsible with the citizen’smoney and build only what the county needs andcan afford. Not what we dream of and can only

afford by overtaxing the citizens!

Twice-told Tales of the Dark Corner

by Dean Campbell

Each September, tall, stately stalks and showy, purple-flow-ered tassels of Joe Pye Weeds line the sides of secondary roads throughout the Dark Corner. They are welcome harbingers of impending cooler days and nights of an Appalachian fall.

Beauty and season forecast-ing have not always been the major purposes for these omni-present plants, h o w e v e r . Their unique configuration m a d e t h e m essential to the testing of white lightnin’ as it aged and mellowed for months in buried charred barrels and kegs to be “chartered.”

Joe Pye Weeds grow ab-solutely hollow all the way through their long stalks (they are sometimes referred to as “nature’s straws”).

Nature disguises this fact by causing all leaves on the plants to grow only at designated inter-vals, much like the “joints” of bamboo. To a casual observer, the leaf clusters appear to be “joints” in the Joe Pye Weeds as well.

Moonshiners who “char-tered” their whiskey—particu-larly for medicinal purposes—would cut sections of Joe Pye Weeds to use as “quills” to lower into buried barrels and kegs to test the mellowness of the ag-ing elixir.

After burying the barrels, a section about 12 inches in di-ameter would be left open over the bung area. Moss, leaves and loose brush, which could be eas-ily removed later, would be used to fill this area.

When ready for testing, the loose items would be removed and any small debris would be brushed away. Then the bung would be removed so that the “quill” could be lowered into the barrel.

A sip could easily be si-

phoned into the mouth for proper testing. Then the bung would be replaced and loose items again returned to the open area.

On occasion, the tester would have to take several sips to be sure of proper aging and mel-lowness. This usually occurred on a particularly warm, humid day.

If more than one person was available for testing, the volume in the buried barrel was consider-ably less once the proper aging

had been reached and the barrel removed from the ground.

**************Be sure to drop by the Lan-

drum Library gallery this month to view the Dark Corner Folk-lore Exhibit. It features vintage photographs from “The Dark Corner: Documenting the Oral Tradition,” a 1983 project to preserve the rich folklore of the mountainous region, conducted by Dr. Bernard Zaidman and sponsored by Limestone College and the South Carolina Commit-tee for the Humanities. The pho-torgraphs depict 39 documenta-tion participants and scenes from the project. The free exhibit will run through Oct. 30.

TrusT? At the debate on 10/7/2010 of the Commissioner wanna-bes, Margaret and Benny said that if they got elected they would put away the Democrat Party hat and work for the people. Well, let me tell you from experience, they lied to me and I would just as soon put a snake in my pocket. Now I know what the "Inner Circle" does, and it is deadly.

Judge selected as one of North Carolina’s Fabulous 50 winners

Autumn Care of Salu-da announces that Teresa Judge, CNA, has been selected as one of North Carolina’s Fabulous 50 winners.

The Fabulous 50 awards program, spon-sored by the North Car-olina Health Care Fa-cilities Association, is an important part of the long term care community’s effort to recognize the extraordinary contribu-tions of all front-line staff to the quality of care and quality of life of indi-viduals residing in skilled nursing facilities. The Fabulous 50 are nominated by their co-workers for this award. Each person selected will be hon-ored at a dinner celebration, and receive a certificate from N.C. Governor Beverly Purdue.

Judge has been a CNA since 1992, providing special care to the geriatric population at Au-tumn Care. She began her work as a nursing assistant at Autumn Care long before certification was required. When new regu-lations took effect, she took all the classes required to become a CNA I.

Judge’s positive attitude is contagious among staff, resi-dents and families. She laughs, loves and cries with one and all as a close family member would. Numerous family members brag on her by name. One family member stated, “I know Teresa had Momma today. Momma had on rouge and lipstick, but more importantly, she had that special look that I know only Teresa can bring.” It’s another one of those examples that indicates Judge’s desire to go above and beyond her basic duties.

“Cheerleader” is a word often used in conjunction with Judge’s name. She participates in virtu-

ally all facility activities. She will dress up, clog, dance, sing and do anything else needed to enlist resident participation and provide for their entertainment. Those cheerleading efforts also extend beyond Autumn’s resident population. She has become the primary recruiter for the facility’s biannual Red Cross Blood Drive. At Autumn’s July 2010 event she recruited 11 first time donors.

Judge’s major outside support of the facility is her involvement in one of Saluda’s biggest sum-mer events. Teresa is the “self-appointed” head of Autumn’s “Coon Dog Day Float Commit-tee” for the event’s big parade. Each year she helps develop a theme for the facility’s parade float, helps with the decorating and recruits staff members to participate.

For 2010 she sponsored a facility contest to suggest this year’s theme, drawing everyone into the event. Along with our float, there is a facility King and Queen for the event. These residents ride in the parade and Judge makes sure they look their finest before riding off to the

cheering crowds. Through her ef-forts, 10 to 15,000 people see the lighter side of the industry and learn that skilled nursing facili-ties can be positive and homelike living arrangements.

When her co-workers were asked for descriptive words about Judge, nearly all had trou-ble limiting it to just one word. “Bubbly,” “passionate,” “outgo-ing,’’ “caring,” and “never meets a stranger” were just some of the terms used.

Editor’s note: The follow-ing is Judge’s essay that was required as a contestant in the Fab 50 Contest.

Hello, my name is Teresa Judge. I am a Certified Nursing Assistant and for most of my life I have known I was destined to help others. It makes my heart feel good to know I make a difference in the lives of our residents.

To say this job is easy would be an understatement. By the end of each day’s hard work, though, there are always great rewards. Sometimes it’s the smile on a res-ident’s face as they say “Thank you for helping me.” Other times it’s simply looking at the picture of the latest great-grandchild. Having family members pat you on the back and say “thank you for all you do,” is one of the best rewards of the job.

Holding the hand of one who’s taking their last breath, and knowing they didn’t leave this world alone, is very special to me. While the loss of a resi-dent saddens me, I take special pride in knowing that I made their last moments comfortable and that they went in the pres-ence of friends.

This job is not just for anyone. It requires taking care of those who can’t take care of them-selves and doing it in a loving way, allowing them to keep their pride and dignity. I didn’t just “choose” this profession; I was blessed to be chosen to do it!

They arrive hungry, sometimes sick. They are lost or orphaned. We feed them, heal them, bathe and brush them. Our donors provide the money to shelter and care for them. Our volunteers walk them, train them and help to rehabilitate them. Kind people bring food, cat litter, towels and toys.

We do all this to meet the ultimate goal....…Adoption!

We hope, pray and plea for loving, respon-sible adopters for every animal so that none must die. We breathe a sigh of relief each month that passes that we don’t have to euthanize a single healthy, adoptable animal.

Thank you to all of the wonderful people that make this possible! Thank you donors, volunteers, fosters and vets!

Now here is our plea…………….....We need AdOPTErs.

We need YOU to come to the shelter and AdOPT. We need loving, responsible

AdOPTErs NOW. We will be happy to be match-makers. We can

help you introduce your pet to a new friend. We can even provide follow-up training and advice.

Letter to the EditorShields will get my voteTo the Editor:

A nice service of the Sheriff’s office is checking houses while the owner is out of town. One time, we had just returned when an officer knocked on our door to check on us. We had not even had time to cancel the check. Since the Abril administration has been in power, we no longer felt comfortable using this service.

When Donald Hill’s name comes up in conversation, you usually hear the phrase, “nice guy”. To quote Leo Durocher, “nice guys finish last”. From what I have seen in the paper and on the news, we need someone tougher for our Sheriff.

Ballet Spartanburg offers ongoing lyrical dance classes

So you think you can dance? Or you at least want to learn? Ballet Spartanburg offers ongoing classes in lyrical dance: one for children eight to 12; another for teenagers and adults.

Lyrical dance is a free-form style that borrows movements from ballet, modern and jazz, and is choreographed to well-known music that has lyrics. Very often, the dance will tell the story associ-ated with the song.

These one-hour classes are designed for beginners with no experience and non-dancers of all

ages. The children’s class meets on Mondays at 3:30 p.m. and are taught by Susan Woodham, a dance teacher with Ballet Spartanburg for nearly 20 years.

The teenager/adult class is on Thursdays at 7 p.m. and taught by Carlos Agudelo, Ballet Spartan-burg’s artistic director. Classes are held at the Chapman Cultural Center in downtown Spartanburg.

To sign up or for more infor-mation, call Ballet Spartanburg at 864-583-0339 or visit www.BalletSpartanburg.com.

Landrum cruised to a 36-0 homecoming victory over st. Joseph’s Friday night.

the Cardinals (5-2 overall, 2-0 region II-a) won their fourth-straight game behind ju-nior quarterback Brandon Can-non, who ran for a game-high 121 yards, including touchdown scampers of 37 and 4 yards, and threw for 235 yards and a touchdown to tyler Logan.

It was a rude reception for the Knights (1-6, 0-2), who are in their first year of varsity competition in region II-a. st. Joseph’s was held to 93 yards of total offense – 25 rushing and 68 passing – as the Landrum defense recorded its second straight shutout.

“I think you get a lot of momentum from (a shutout), pushing through it, getting it done,” said Landrum defensive

captain antonio Barron.the Cardinals have now

outscored their last four op-ponents 188-35 and share the region lead with Christ Church, a 55-26 winner over Blacksburg Friday night.

Landrum got first-quarter touchdown runs of 7 and 11 yards, respectively from peyton McCarter and Cole McDowell to take a 14-0 lead at the end of the opening period.

McDowell and McCarter, Landrum’s two-headed mon-ster at running back, combined for 163 rushing yards on 14 carries.

Cannon found Logan from 12 yards out to cap an eight-play, 89-yard drive that was set up by austin Brown’s intercep-tion of st. Joseph’s quarterback tucker genal at the Landrum 11.

Perfect storm ends perfect season for Polk football Team loses a close one 24-23

“perfect storm” is an expres-sion that describes a rare com-bination of circumstances that aggravates a situation drastically. this term could easily be used for the polk Co. versus Mitchell game this Friday.

polk had just come off a huge win over what was generally considered to be its toughest op-ponent, the team was playing a supposedly inferior team, the polk players had no school that day, it was an away game with an unfavorable field, it was against a team that had a close loss the week prior, and there was some controversial clock management by the game officials.

that combination led to the end

of polk County’s perfect season as the team lost to Mitchell 24-23 in a last-second disappointment.

Mitchell did a good job of lim-iting polk’s big play offense and special teams. they consistently kicked away from polk’s normally explosive return team of overholt, Booker and orick. they consis-tently “short kicked” on kickoffs and their punter did not allow polk any substantial returns.

The lackluster first half ended tied 10-10. the second half proved to be anything but dull. seldom-used quarterback troy self threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Corey greene with 10 seconds remaining to lift the Mountaineers to a 24-23 upset at home.

Mahaffey credited an offensive line that helped produce 23 first downs on the night.

“I’m real proud of every-

Cannon, who completed 13

of 20 pass attempts with the touchdown and an interception, added both of his touchdown runs in the third and fourth quarters as the Cardinals con-tinued to pull away.

a 26-yard touchdown pass from Hughes in the fourth quarter to make it 17-17, polk drove down the field and found the end zone, with overholt running it in from the 3. However, Mitchell’s ryan sparks blocked the extra point following polk County’s final touchdown, making the score 23-17. Meanwhile Mountaineers kicker Isaac edwards made the deciding extra point. (edwards had missed the critical extra point last week which led to the Moun-taineers’ 14-13 loss to owen.)

the clock controversy in-volved the officials repeated-ly stopping the clock between

downs, allowing Mitchell to set their offense during the final drive. Many who attended the game felt with normal clock procedures the Mountaineers would have never gotten off the final play scoring with 10 seconds left.

polk junior quarterback andre overholt went 9-for-15 for 156 yards and also had 21 carries for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

polk falls to 6-1 and 2-1 in the Western Highlands Conference, while the Mountaineers improve to 4-3 and 2-1. Five teams are now tied atop the WHC stand-ings with 2-1 records: Mitchell, polk, avery County, Mountain Heritage and owen.

polk County takes on avery this Friday. It is homecoming for the Wolverines.

‘European DISUnion’ class at ICC Polk campus beginning Oct. 13

Ron Cliff will teach a course titled “European DISUnion” starting Wednesday, October 13, at Isothermal Community College Polk Campus.

The sole Western “rival” to the United States, the European Union, is a third larger in population, and has some of the larger global economies, yet comes across as dysfunctional…as speaking in different tongues. Cliff describes the class as telling the story behind the story…of how histories have merged together. It’s the American Articles of Confederation with a twist, says Cliff.

This class examines not only the national and ethnic piece parts of this union but traces how the union came about and what it actually is. Who are they, where are they and what is their “experience?” What is a Briton, or an Italian or an Austrian? It’s

not really a continental peoples’ government. So what is it?

The class will meet each Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. for three weeks starting October 13.

Instructor Ron Cliff earned his B.A. from Notre Dame, an M.A. from Ohio University and worked on his doctorate at Cornell. He is a retired corporate intelligence director and intrepid traveler. His approach to teach-ing is to present opinionated facts that enhance thinking and demand discussion.

Cliff will teach another two session class November 10 and 17 titled “DISUnited States” examining the details behind the colors in America – the red and blue states, the blacks and whites and reds and yellows, and the males and females.

Polk County sheriff debate Oct. 14The 9.12 Project of Polk

County North Carolina, a non-partisan group, announces that a sheriff debate will be held on October 14 at 6:30 p.m., on the second floor of the Womack Building. 9.12 organizer Deb-bie Arceneaux has contacted incumbent Sheriff Donald Hill and candidate Nathan Shields. Both agreed to the debate saying they looked forward to informing the citizens of Polk County about their platforms.

“This debate is important, since the sheriffs’ office holds the safety and security of our citizens.” Arceneaux says, “Most people do not realize the power the sheriff has with county, state or federal law – this is a very important decision.”

Arceneaux also made it clear that the organization is “just host-ing the event. We have set the platform for the debate, we have asked the candidates to give us ideas on questions, and we have a moderator not associated with any political group. I believe we

have done everything possible to ensure this is non-partisan,” she said.

Arceneaux would not com-ment on the individual candi-dates, “because my political stance is not important here.” She went on to say, “I really like both candidates. The sheriff is ap-proachable as is Nathan Shields. I hope both have ideas in their platform that support the wants and needs of the citizens in Polk County.”

The elections for a mid-term seem charged, organizers say. Both parties are hitting hard to get voters out to events and hopefully the polls. The 9.12 Project organizers believe the framers of our country gave us very important rights, the right to free speech, the right to defend ourselves and the right to be free. They say they are hopeful that the citizens of Polk County will not be complacent and will attend fo-rums and meet and greets – most importantly, vote.

TCA presents the St. Lawrence String Quartet Saturday, October 16

Tryon Concert Association will open its 56th season with the St. Lawrence String Quartet, Saturday, October 16, at 8 p.m. at the Tryon Fine Arts Center.

This internationally acclaimed Canadian string quartet, founded in 1989, has received praise for its performances as well as its many activities to promote the education of young musicians and chamber ensembles.

Named for Canada’s mighty St. Lawrence River, the group has developed a reputation for its musical imagination and sen-sitivity as well as its “sensational physical abandon and complete lack of emotional inhibition.” (Boston Globe)

The group’s awards have been many, starting with receipt of first prize at the Banff Inter-national String Quartet Compe-tition and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 1992. They are educators as well as performers, serving as resident instructors at the Juil-liard School and the universities of Yale, Toronto, Hartford and Stanford.

The artists include violist Lesley Robertson and violinist Geoff Nuttall, who are found-

ing members of the group; cel-list Christopher Constanze, who joined the quartet in 2003 and violinist Scott St. John, who joined in 2006.

Recording on the EMI label, SLSQ CDs include works from the Romantic era as well as 20th century composers. The group re-ceived two Grammy nominations in 2003 for its CD of the music of Ozvaldo Golijov (Yiddishbuk) and in 2001 the Juno Award (the Canadian “Grammy”) for Schu-mann’s First and Third Quartets. SLSQ’s Tchaikovsky CD has been called the “benchmark” recording

of these works. Recently the group has begun new recordings through a partnership with ArtistShare.com, a musician-controlled group which communicates directly with fans.

This opening concert of the 2010-2011 season on October 16th will include the works of Mozart, Prokofiev and Ravel.
