This book is designed especially for beginners of chinese. lt can be usedas a textbook for chinese classes or self study, or as additional studymaterial outside of class. Using this textbook readers can experience thefun of learning Chinese while enjoying the Chinese culture.

The book has atotal of 18 lessons. Each lesson consists of four parts:Reading China, My China Story Reading for Fun and Everyday Chinese.Reading china aims to introduce the readers to chinese society andculture as well as the language, and give them a better understanding ofchina. My china story consists of honest and fun articles written byoverseas students about their feelings and experiences in china. Readingfor Fun is composed of cross-culturaljokes and funny cartoons. Everyday

TO THE STUDENT

Pieces of China - A Reading Textbook is designed especially for beginners of Chinese. It can actas either a reading textbook for Chinese classes, material for self-study or as an after school reader.

Each lesson consists of four parts: Reading China, My China Story Reading for Fun, and EverydayChinese. Reading China aims to mainly introduce Chinese society and culture. Through multiplestyles and methods, it demonstrates the charm of contemporary China with its traditions andfashions, aiming to attract the readers with its wide diversity. My China Story consists of articlesby overseas students written about their feelings and experiences in China. The stories are fresh andnatural. Reading for fun is composed of cross-cultural jokes and funny carloons. Everyday Chineseaims to give the students as much practice outside the classroom as possible.

The exercises are designed to give guided reading practice, and advice on how to carry out manyfunctions. Coming to the sections ä.-ii, and E -E , students can try to talk, and write, aboutwhat they feel and think about the reading text. Regarding to the section E -q , students maywrite first on a separate piece paper and then copy their work into the book after corrections.

After finishing the whole book students will find that their Chinese has greatly improved, andfurthermore, that they know more about China.

As a textbook, it has the following outstanding features: 1. It provides various ways to practiceChinese using fun content and lively information; 2. Being so user-friendly, it can easily satisfz theneeds of students; 3. Students can easily improve their reading skills, whilst enjoying the charm ofChina and experiencing the fun of the Chinese language; 4. With added cultural elements, it canbroaden the cross cultural perspectives ofstudents, and help decease the cultural misunderstandings.By following the lessons in this book, students will eventually be able to achieve a natural level ofcomfort with the language.

ln addition to the text, there is also an attached MP3, so students can listen and review lessons intheir spare time.
