Is Jesus “Wisdom”? Controversy of Prov. 8:22

ESV: “The LORD possessed me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of old.

NIV: “The LORD brought me forth as the first of his works, before his deeds of old;

NET: “The LORD created me as the beginning of his works, before his deeds of long ago.

Personification of Book’s Wisdom/Teaching4

Greater than Solomon Matthew 12:42 The queen of the South will rise

up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.

Jesus & Job

Ultimate Wisdom

66

Blameless but Suffered Choose to trust God even without rewards or rational

answers but solely because of WHO God is.

Job 1:1 There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil.

Jesus was perfectly innocent but suffered completely

Prov. 14:32 The wicked is overthrown through his evildoing, but the righteous finds refuge in his death.

7

Through Suffering Hebrews 5:7-10 7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus

offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. 8 Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. 9 And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, 10 being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

Forsaken Jesus forsaken by closest friends

And on the cross… Psalm 22:1–2 1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken

me? Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning? 2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer, and by night, but I find no rest.

22 I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you: 23 You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel! 24 For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him.

9

Steadfast Trust James 5:11 Behold, we consider those blessed who

remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.

1 Peter 2:21–24 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

10

Jesus as Advocate Job 16:19-21 “Even now, behold, my witness is in

heaven, and he who testifies for me is on high. My friends scorn me; my eye pours out tears to God, that he would argue the case of a man with God, as a son of man does with his neighbor.”

John 14:16–17 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

11

Jesus as Intercessor Job 42:8 Now therefore take seven bulls and seven

rams and go to my servant Job and offer up a burnt offering for yourselves. And my servant Job shall pray for you, for I will accept his prayer not to deal with you according to your folly….

Luke 23:34 “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

Romans 8:34b …Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.

12

Jesus as Redeemer Job 19:25-27 For I know that my Redeemer lives,

and at the last he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another. My heart faints within me!

Proverbs 23:10-11 Do not move an ancient landmark or enter the fields of the fatherless, for their Redeemer is strong; he will plead their cause against you.

Jesus & Ecclesiastes

Ultimate Wisdom

1414

Begin with End in mind Ecc. 12:13-14 13 The end of the matter; all has been

heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.

Jesus lived with our End in mind: Judgment

15

Fool didn’t read Ecclesiastes! Luke 12:16–21 16 And he told them a parable, saying,

“The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.” ’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ 21 So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

16

Wisdom & Folly 1 Cor. 3:18-19a 18 Let no one deceive himself.

If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. …

Solomon’s wisdom: Max wealth/health/ease,

Min pain/suffering/sacrifice…now.

God’s wisdom: Christ crucified!

17

1 Corinthians 1:20-31 20 Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. 22 For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. 26 For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, 29 so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. 30 And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, 31 so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
