Starting a project, choosing a material.<2011.3.23>

What did I do today? Today, I started to make a toy, which is our project. First, I had to choose a material for my toy. My toy will be a pulling and pushing toy, which is called pully the cat. I choose thick softwood and I looked for it’s handle part, but couldn't find out suitable material so I just started to mark on my material. I thought my toy would be much bigger so I choose more material, but I changed my mind when I thought of 2 year olds’ height. They are very short and hands are small so short little kids

can’t hold them so I changed my mind to use a small and think piece of wood. The picture above is the tools and materials that I have chosen today. I started to measure and mark out with tri-square and a ruler. Drawing a cat’s shape at the front was actually easy for me but then I had to draw all the lines and shapes all over 6 sides of material and that step was very hard. I tried very hard and to be accurate to draw a sketch at both side of hexahedron.

What will be the next step?The next step will be cutting a wood. I will chop the rectangular part first. EmotionsToday, I was very exited but in the other hand, I was a bit confused.

Because I was designing a bigger size of toy but I had to change my mind, suddenly. So I was a bit confused. However, today was a departure of new project. What did I do? Today, I started to cut my product, which was the first step of making a project. I had to be careful while I was cutting a wood because the shape was very rounded. I started to cut and I cut the cat’s back. It was hard to cut by using tenon saw to chop out all the round parts and I had to sand the round parts. My project called

What will be the next step?

The next step that I will have to do is to finish cutting a cat in two periods and I will have to file send or revise the shape.

Today was very thrilling. Because I had to cut a round shape with a tenon saw so it was very hard to make it round. But still the product is fun as usual. I couldn't really do lots of things because today was a single period.

Today, I continued cutting (chopping out) all the parts of my

product. I cut the head part today with a coping saw. I also cut a

back part again to make it smoother with the coping saw. I used

tenon saw to cut the straight part and used coping saw to cut it

roundly. I also used gent saw because tenon saw was very heavy

and hard to use. It made me tired quickly.

How did I feel like?

Today, I was very happy because I finally found out how to use saws

in easier way. However, I felt a bit tired at that time because all I did

was to shake my hands back and forth to cut it and couldn't take a

rest. Spending 2 whole period to cut something is quite long time.

But still, I liked it.


The next step will be cutting a mouse’s shape and measuring

marking out for nice mouse.

Today, I worked on filing the pully the cat, which is my product’s name. Today, I have done the entire filing step for cat’s body part. I used round file, flat file, and half rounded

cat, because the original cutting by saw was not good and neat. Therefore, I had to file it for a long time to get the shape to completely round. I think today’s work was quiet successful.

What would be the next step?

The next step will be finishing up the filing the cat’s body and starting to measure and mark out the mouse’s body.

How was the feeling of today?

Today was a bit boring and tired but still fun. It was hard and tired because using the file is very hard work for everyone and it was hard to make the hole in the middle of the cat’s body because there was a black spot in that part, and it felt very hard to file it. Also one of the reason why filing took long time was that file was a bit dirty. Now, I know how to clean the file. I am happy because it is always fun to make something by myself.

What did I do today? Today, I finally finished revising shape of the project’s body part that I am making. So the next step was cutting small piece of mouse that is going to sit on the pully the cat’s back. As I did when I cut the pully the cat, first I had to measure the size and mark it out. So the mouse is kind of handle when children are pulling the toy but when children are pushing it, then it has to be small enough to put it on the back of the cat. cut my project. I used tenon saw and coping saw to cut it correctly. Finally, I finished cutting my mouse.


Today was very delighting because I started to cut new piece of wood. I was very happy. But when I cut the wood in wrong way (I cut it on the line) I was kind of scared. But when I finished cutting it in

good way, I was very happy.


The next step will be filing and revising the shape of mouse. I will use half rounded file and flat file and also round file. I will have to revise all the edges of mouse therefore children won’t be able to hurt

themselves by grabbing it.

Today, I think I was a risk taker. It is because I didn't really care about design of a mouse because of its function and it’s size. I draw the design and measuring very fast and I just started to cut out.

Even it dangerous to finish it in right way. Therefore, I made one mistake but I finally could finish it.

Revising the shape of my mouse

What did I do today? Today, I revised a shape of my mouse that I finished cutting

yesterday. I used a half rounded file to file some edges and round parts. Also, I used a flat file to file the flat parts and I used round file to file all the round parts. For the bottom part of the mouse, I used disc- sander to make it round perfectly. I finished filing this mouse today and started to mark out the wheels. I used Tri- Square and a pencil to mark out. I

marked out small wheels.


I will have to cut out the wheels that I just marked out and I will have to mark out another set of wheels that are bigger that this wheel.


Today, I felt very boring because the only thing that I was doing was filing with files. I did same action for almost 2 periods and the action was just moving hand with files back and forth. But when I finished filing it, I felt very good and I felt like I did a fruitful job today. When I started to mark out the wheels, I was kind of confused because I haven’t done this job before. Therefore, I wasn't that sure about marking it out.


I think I was a reflective learner because I reflected the feedback from my friend, Julia. She suggested me to use the professional looking wheels to put in my toys. I had to do my work with the pedestal drill kind of looking to cut my wheels out. I think that was a great idea.

Today, I cut the handle part of my toy. First thing that I had to do was to measure and mark out. First, I used the longest ruler in the room to mark out because the handle will be longer than the body

part of my toy. So, I first did the same thing as I did when I was making a body part. And then I used the filing thing to make my handle softer.


I was very excited because this was the first time I have ever used that tool to soften the handle. It was fun at the beginning but when it became so soft that I couldn't cut more than that, I had to change

a side of the toy left to right.


The next step will be cutting out my wheels, only the smart part. I will also have to finish filing my handle part and sand my wheels that will be cut out later.

I think I was a risk taker. It is because this was the fist time I have ever tried this tool to file my work. Obviously, I also didn't

know how to use this tool but then I tried to figure out how this tool works so I finally found out. Therefore, I think I was the risk taker.

Today, I finished filing and cutting a handle part of my toy. Also I cut out some wheels that I already measured

and marked out. Those wheels, I used a pedestal drill, but using another kind of drills that is only for professional- looking wheels. I had to be careful while I was cutting out a wheel.


I felt very nervous today. It was because I had to take lots of care

when I cut out the wheels. Otherwise, It will break into pieces. Also today, I dropped the filing thing to floor and felt so nervous.

I think I will need to cut out the big wheels for my toy. Also, I will have to continue filing the big wheels that I will cut.


I think I was a caring learner. It is because cutting out the wheels is very hard and complicated work for me. Therefore, I had to take lots of care to cut out my wheels.

Today, I filed my handle part that I already finished cutting it out. Also, I made hole on wheel and I got 4 of them. Now, I have 2 small wheels and two big wheels. First, I used planning tool to cut out all the edges of it and I used garnet paper to round it. To cut out and make wheel, I used pedestal drill. I had to be really carful because it was the first time I have ever used this drill to cut out wheels.

I will have to make an axel for wheel and make a hole on the body to put wheel in it. And then I will have to cut out back (tail part) on my toy’s body part for tail to go in.


I felt so happy because all I had to do after this work is just nailing them together and painting it. While I was working on this stage, I was very excited about this fact. When I was working on this stage, I was kind of bored because lots of people were using pedestal drill. I had to make wheels, however, I had to wait so I decided to do another work. Such as filing my mouse one more

time.


I think I was a risk taker today because I haven’t use the wheel making drill before but I tried without any help at the beginning. Also, I am trying a new way to connect tail and body part so I

think I am the risk taker.

What did I do today? Today, I cut small piece at the back of my toy’s body part. After cutting that out, I could connect the handle part and the body part together by using drill and screw. I used tenon saw for cutting the body part out roughly. And then I used gent saw to file and cut out the corner part clearly. After I was done with cutting it out, I started to use drill. I used drill very carefully because if I don't,

then it is going to break up. After that, I had to use screw and

another tool to connect them. Before I connect them, I put little amount of glue so that it will be more stable.

How did I feel like today?

Today was very thrilling but still fun and stable. I was stable because I knew exactly what I needed to do and I was used to that. But, I felt very thrilling because when I was drilling, I didn't know it was straight or not. I had to be very careful and think of nice shape of toy. It was very fun today as usual, because I was creating something from

nothing.


The next step will be cutting out wheel’s out-center hole for my out center wheel. Also, after that, I will have to use glue and other material to fill in the original hole of the wheels. I will also have to file the connection

part of my toy, by using haft rounded and flat file. If there is time, I will be able to make a hole in toy for wheels to go in and roll properly.


I think I was a caring learner today, because I haven’t used the drilling tool before. I also needed to take care of the fact that it was straight or not, so it was very hard to do. Therefore, I think I was a caring learner.

Today, I filed the handle and body’s connection part. First, I used half rounded file and flat file to file it. When I was done with filing the edges, I started to use different tool to smooth it. I smoothed it with a garnet paper that made it so mush batter than just using the

files. I used it to smooth it also to file the handle part finally. After I was done with filing it, I used pedestal drill to drill another hole on the wheel for out center wheel. I did it on the big wheels

and I did one of them. I couldn't do another one because I was lacking of class time.


The next step will be finishing up making hole on wheel for out center wheels. Also, I will have to file and cover the original hole in the middle. Furthermore, I will be able to make a hole at toy for wheels to go in and roll

I felt very good because I was very close to finish up all the steps for making this toy except for painting stage. Therefore, I was so happy but I felt kind of scared because when I was making out center hole I knew that I was lacking of time.


I think I was a reflective learner because I reflected Mr. Anderson’s feedback. He asked me to use the garnet paper. So I used it because it seemed better and easier. Therefore, I was a reflective learner.

Today, I made new wheels because the small wheels that I made before were not working at all.

They didn’t roll and they just stuck. So the new idea that I have thought of was to put out center wheels to fron and put

normal wheels for back. I used pedestal drill to drill and make those wheels. After that, I filed my wheels with a garnet paper. And then I put the wheels ad axel together by using hammer and glue. But the axel was too lose and long, so I had to cut them out and file them again. The final thing I did was to make a hole for string to connect a mouse and a body of the toy.


The next step will be making one more hole on mouse’s body. I will have to make sure that wheels are stable before I start painting it. And then I will have to start painting it.


I was very happy today because I was about to finish cutting them out and connecting alll the wooden things together. I love to paint something, and I am almost there to paint it. Therfore, I was very hyper today.

PAINTING PULLY THE CAT<2011.5.12>


Today, I made another hole on the body of the pully the cat. After that, I started to pain my toy with bright orange color. I used a drill to make the hole on the body of the toy. I mixed yellow – orange color and bright – red color to make a color that I wanted. I used bright – red less than yellow – Orange.

The next step will be filing what I painted today. After that, I will start painting it again with a same color. I will file it because I want to make it a s smooth as it can be.


I felt so happy and fun. It is because I painted it today and I liked it. The feeling when I use brush to paint it was so smooth that I felt like I was putting jelly on the toy. Also, I waited for this stage very much.


I think I was a reflective learner. It is because I got a feedback from my friend (Ray) that I shouldn't use only one color. By this feedback, I decided to use two colors. Therefore I was a reflective learner.

Today, I painted, pully the cat one more time. I had to file it with a garnet paper before I start painting. I filed it to make it smoother. I had to think of the ratio that I used before to make that orange. So when I made this orange, I

started to color this again. After I was done with painting it, I started to pain my wheels. The shape of my wheels was like snail. I used paint to paint yellow part and used black marker to paint black part.


I felt very tired because I needed to paint it very carefully. I used big brush to paint the body part. When I painted the body part, it was easy and feeling was very nice. However, when I used small brush to paint the wheels, I was very nervous. That was because I was really not used to use that kind of small, thick, hard brush.


The next step will be finishing up painting my wheels with black mark. Also, I will need to repeat what I did today.

Today, I finished painting my wheels. I used black marker to paint it. I had to be careful to make all the wheels look the same. After that, I checked whether the toy is dried. I filed the toy because I was pretty sure it was dried. I used a garnet paper to file it. I had to make it smoother to feel better when children touch it. Additionally, if it is not, then it is going to hut children.

How did I feel like today?

I think I was just normal today. It is because I was kind of bored of painting my product. It was already third time.

The next step will be drawing some more shapes on the body part of the cat. I think if I have more time, I will be able to put strings into my mouse and cat to connect them together.

Today, I had to file my toy again to make it extremely smooth. I used garnet paper as usual. It took almost 20 minutes to finish smoothing it. After that, I used wood filer to fill all the rough part.

What would be the next step?

The next step will be filing the wood filled part with a garnet paper. It is because the wood filler didn't really work well. I will also have to color the new pattern on my cat to look nicer. And then I will need to file it. After that step, everything will be done.

Today, I felt really not good. I was very disappointed of lacking of time. The next class and next next class will be the last class time that will be given for us to finish our project. But, I am not done with it. There is still much more left. I had to rush so my mind was not really happy.


I think I was a knowledgeable learner. It was because I knew what to do. I didn't stop working and I kept on working.

The Final step of producing the toy<2011.5.23>


Today, I was done with making my toy. I first had to cover the part that has been covered with wood filler. And then I waited for 10 minutes for it to dry. After that, I draw the yellow pattern on the body part of the toy. I used paintbrush to paint it. But when I painted it wrong, I used the orange paint to cover the wrong yellow part with it. When I was done with the whole painting, I connected my toy’s body part and the

mouse’s body part with a string. I used a drill to make the string to go in easily. I put PVA glue on the knot part. While I was waiting for it to dry, I filed the axel part of my wheel to the wheel role better. When the glue dried, I put wheels in with PVA glue. After that, I am done with it.

very much. I had to do as mush as possible today because the given class time is not enough to finish it. But, when I was done with everything, I was really relieved. I felt very nice.
