Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of
rocks. Rocks are a mixture
of minerals usually cemented together.

3
Scientists group, or classify, rocks by the way
they form. Some rocks form from
melted minerals that cool and
harden. These are classified as igneous rocks.

4
Rocks that form when small pieces of minerals, or the remains of living things,
become cemented or compacted
together are classified as sedimentary rocks.

5
Metamorphic rocks form from existing
rocks which are slowly changed by
heat and pressure.

Large pools of molten rock inside Earth called magma
sometimes rises through cracks in rocks into the
upper part of Earth’s crust.

In the upper part of Earth’s crust, the
temperature is cooler than the temperature
inside the mantle.
![Page 10: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
10
As magma rises through cracks in the Earth’s
crust, it cools and crystallizes. As it
hardens, igneous rock is formed.
![Page 11: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
11
Igneous rock can take thousands of
years to form from magma.
![Page 12: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
12
Depending on where they form, igneous
rocks are classifies as intrusive
or extrusive.
![Page 13: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
13
One type of igneous rock is intrusive. This is rock that cools from magma
inside Earth. Granite is a common intrusive rock.
![Page 14: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
14
Another type of igneous rock is extrusive. That is
rock that cools quicklyfrom lava at Earth’s
surface. Obsidian is an example of
extrusive rock.
![Page 15: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
15
How are sedimentary rocks formed?
![Page 16: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
16
Most sedimentary rocks are formed in water. These
rocks form sediments which are rock particles carried and deposited
water, wind, or ice
![Page 17: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
17
The layers of sediment may be hundreds of meters thick. As more sediment is added,
the lower layers become tightly packed under the
pressure and weight of the new layers.
![Page 18: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
18
The older sediments become solid rock
when water and air are squeezed out from
between the sediment layers.
![Page 19: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
19
The sediments may also become solid rock
when dissolved minerals in the water cement the sediments
together.
![Page 20: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
20
Some types of sedimentary rocks
form from the remains
of living organisms.
![Page 21: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
21
The shells or skeletons of sea animals contain calcium carbonate.
When these organisms die, their remains are left on the bottom of
the ocean.
![Page 22: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
22
Over millions of years, the shells and skeletons build up on the
ocean floor.
![Page 23: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
23
Some of the calcium carbonate dissolves
and comes out of the solution to cement the minerals together. This
forms solid rock.
![Page 24: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
24
How are metamorphic rocks formed?
![Page 25: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
25
The inside of Earth is like an oven. Heat and pressure inside Earth
“bakes” rocks and changes the
minerals in them.
![Page 26: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
26
These chemically changed rocks are
called metamorphic rocks.
![Page 27: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
27
Existing rocks can be subjected to chemical changes like extreme
heat above 800º C and the minerals melt into
magma or molten rock.
![Page 28: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
28
Rocks are also affected by forces within Earth that cause pressure.
Extreme pressure can flatten minerals into
layers.
![Page 29: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
29
Metamorphic rocks are sometimes formed
when existing rocks come into contact with
or mix with magma.
![Page 30: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
30
Magma can move into cracks in deeply buried sedimentary rocks. It
may also flow between layers of sedimentary rocks.
![Page 31: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
31
The heat and chemical solutions in the magma cause the
minerals inside the sedimentary
rock to change.
![Page 32: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
32
The heat from magma can also change
minerals in igneous rocks and turn one kind
of metamorphic rock into a different kind of
metamorphic rock.
![Page 33: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
33
What is the rock cycle?
![Page 34: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
34
Rocks on Earth change over time.
Some of these changes take place
inside Earth.
![Page 35: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
35
Inside Earth, tremendous heat and pressure can slowly
change rocks from one kind to another.
![Page 36: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
36
Other changes in rocks like rain, ice, wind or
chemicals in the air or water take place
at the surface.
![Page 37: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
37
The series of natural processes by which
rocks are slowly changed from one kind to another is called the
rock cycle.
![Page 38: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
38
All three classes of rock eventually lead to
sedimentary rock.
![Page 39: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
39
The three classes of rocks
can also be changed into metamorphic rock or
back into magma.
![Page 40: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
40
Only igneous rocks, however, come directly from
magma.
![Page 41: 1 What are rocks?. 2 Earth’s crust is made up of many different kinds of rocks. Rocks are a mixture of minerals usually cemented together.](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062300/56649cbf5503460f949857d4/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)
41
High temperatures can change any rock
back into magma.
