President’s message:

Well winter seems to have

given us a brief greeting and

will hopefully stay away for a

little while longer. I must say I

am not ready to winterize the

Boxster and tuck it away quite

yet. Although I did see a fair

bit of salt on some of the back

roads so I may have to rethink

things. Ever since my motor-

cycling days I’ve lived by the rule that when the salt hits

the road, the car gets tucked away.

Hopefully we’ll get some rain or something to wash the

roads so I can enjoy a few more days in the sun. October

seems to have slipped by quite fast and now we’re star-

ing down November. If things keep going quickly

enough it will be spring again.

In case you haven’t heard, the Board has decided that for

the safety of all members, we will not be holding a holi-

day party this year. I know it’s a bummer for a lot of us

who look forward to everyone getting together for a fun

time but with the way things are looking now, it is best

to not push things and risk our health. Hopefully 2021

will bring better news and lots of fun activities.

One activity you can put on your calendar will be the

2021 Fall Treffen at the American Club in Kohler. You

will hear us talking a lot about this national event that

is being co-hosted by the Fox Valley and Milwaukee

Regions.

Both regions are working very hard on making this

event a top notch Treffen but we will need help when

the time comes. Events like this take a lot of volunteers

and there are many spots where you can help out.

More information on areas where help is needed and

the various time commitments will be coming out early

next year so if you have any desire to help out even for

a short time contact Todd Benz and he’ll be happy to

add your name to the volunteer list!

Until next month, stay safe and stay healthy!

Shaun Stamnes, President

Fox Valley Region Porsche Club of America

Editor’s note: Always thankful for reader input

This is the season where we focus on being thankful. As the editor of this monthly newsletter, I

am always thankful for the input, especially photos, that you send. This year it has been more

difficult to come up with material since we haven’t had many events to cover.

This issue reflects member input. Thanks to Keary Kautzer for the cover photo and Todd and

Justin Benz for the back cover photo. I sure could use your photos for the December issue. Re-

member to think vertical—turn that camera to take a portrait (vertically oriented image) and it

could be on the cover or featured as photo of the month.

Do read the statements of the region officer candidates. You will receive an email with a ballot for your votes. Even

though these members are running unopposed, your vote conveys your confidence in their leadership.

(APEAL) Study. It was the second year in a row that Por-

sche took the top position in the annual study of customer

experience with owning and driving a new vehicle.

Klaus Zellmer, president and CEO of Porsche Cars North

America, Inc., said: “Porsche believes in continuous im-

provement and winning the top spot again just encourages

us to find new ways to delight our drivers.”

The 2020 U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and

Layout Study measures owners’ emotional attachment and

level of excitement with their new vehicle across 37 attrib-

utes, ranging from the sense of comfort and luxury on

climbing into the driver’s seat to the power they feel

when they step on the gas. These attributes combine into

an overall APEAL index score measured on a 1,000-point

scale.

Porsche earned 881 points on the 1,000-point scale, com-

pared to the premium brand average of 861. The study is

based on responses gathered from February through

May of this year from more than 87,000 purchasers and

lessees of new 2020 model-year vehicles who were sur-

veyed after 90 days of ownership.

First positive quarter of 2020 reflects ongoing recovery from pandemic impact

Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA) announced Oct. 1 that third quarter U.S. retail deliveries rose 5.0 percent

from the same period a year ago, continuing a recovery trend from coronavirus lockdowns in the first half of 2020.

Retail deliveries by the 192 independently owned and operated U.S. dealers totaled 15,548 from July through Septem-

ber.

The year-over-year increase in the quarter means that for the first nine months of 2020, sales were 11.8 percent below

the same period in 2019, which was a record year for PCNA deliveries. This marks an improvement from the end of

Q2, when sales for the first six months were down 20.1 percent year-over-year.

“The third quarter remained challenging for many people, so I am grateful to our customers for their enthusiasm and

to our dealers and their employees for the energy they continue to bring to Porsche,” said Joe Lawrence, executive vice

president and chief operating officer of PCNA. “We’ve never had such an exciting lineup in U.S. showrooms – with

demand for the new all-electric Taycan growing to the point that it was our third best-selling model line this quarter,

just behind the Macan and Cayenne. Our thrilling cars and the legendary customer experience provided by Porsche

dealers are contributing to an ongoing recovery.”

Porsche Approved Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) sales in the U.S. totaled 7,661 vehicles from July through September,

up 26.4 percent year-over-year.

The region extends its special thanks to past president and

outgoing vice president Todd Benz who has served in a

leadership position with the board for the past seven years.

Todd is moving up to serve as the PCA national secretary.

Jim Janes, who has served as treasurer for many years is

also stepping down. We thank him for his service as well.

Region members will receive an email in November with a

ballot to elect region officers for 2021. The ballot will in-

clude these candidates.

Shaun Stamnes is running for the position of President. He

has been a PCA member since

2013 “after I realized my lifelong

dream of owning my own Por-

sche.

“I have been a passionate sup-

porter, (i.e. obsessed), with Por-

sche for as long as I can remem-

ber. When I learned about PCA

in the early 80’s I had hoped to

become a member someday if I

was ever lucky enough to own a

Porsche.

“At first I was planning on just being a ‘magazine member.’

However after attending our first region function Dee and I

were hooked. The friendships we have made not just in the

region but from other regions are amazing. On top of that

the technical knowledge and helpfulness of the members is

something that cannot be overstated.

Todd Whitenack is running

for vice president of the Fox

Valley region board. He has

been a PCA member since

January 2019

“There a number of reasons

for being a member: the ob-

vious one is of course is

sharing an interest in both

the old and new Porsches

with people of like mind. Another reason is the events; San-

dra and I like to drive our car a lot and the club provides

additional opportunities for us to do that.

“My interest in Porsches started in the early 1980s while I

was working at a car stereo store which was across the

street from the local Porsche dealer. While installing stereos

Meet the board candidates in Honda Accords and Toyota Corollas I would watch

911 SCs and Turbos going out for test drives. On one of

my more confident days I ventured over there in my

home improved 1979 VW Scirocco. After a few minutes

of self-assuring banter with the sales person, I expressed

my desire to test drive the more modest 911 base car. I

was after all certain that I was ready for two more cylin-

ders. To set the scene just bit more, I was around 18

years of age and in spite of wearing my best shirt, it

turned out that sales person was not as convinced as I

that I needed to drive that car; perhaps it was the obvi-

ous lack of money, we just can’t be sure. Let’s just say I

never I got the keys to that 911 or even that used 914

parked out front.

“But there is a bright side, I got a new VW Jetta just a

couple years later when Sandra and I got married and

over the 30+ years of marriage I never lost thought of

that ‘82 911 SC. I may even still have that sales person’s

card. More recently our youngest child graduated from

college, and it was at that time I said, it’s time for some-

one to get a Porsche. So we purchased a 2000 Boxster for

my wife; face it she earned it more than me. Side note:

she said I get a Porsche too. So if anyone knows where I

can find an early ‘80s SC, I have my best shirt ready and

my wife let me have the check book. I will find that sales

person to do a drive by. Who is with me?”

Mary Haen is running for secretary. Mary and her hus-

band Jim have been mem-

bers since 1996. “It all started

in the mid-1980s while work-

ing timing and scoring at

Road America. I wanted to

know what that ‘cute little

car with the bug eyes’ was.

I'd been bitten by the Por-

sche bug and didn't know it

yet. It only took another 10

years to get our first one.

And she's tucked in for the winter under a cover in the

garage.

“I value PCA because someone, somewhere in the club,

is willing to share advice, tips and ideas that have work

for them over time. And the sharing and support isn't

just limited to cars.”

Erik Scharinger is running for

treasurer. “The time in PCA is

complicated. I allowed my

membership to lapse a few times

but I've been involved with PCA

Fox Valley since 1992. My offi-

cial join date is August 2014.

“I grew up surrounded by

cars. My father was a founding

member of the Kettle Moraine Corvette Club and grow-

ing up in Kansas in the ‘80s I attended the first races at

Heartland Park in Topeka while also spending sum-

mers in Sheboygan going to Road America.

In this era of IMSA prototype racing it was impossible

to miss the awesome 962 Porsche and as an Indy Car

fan, Porsche re-entered that arena in 1987.

“Also, sometime in the ‘80s my father turned his atten-

tion away from Corvettes to German cars (started with

an Audi, then Mercedes), and as they say, the rest is

history. He picked up a 1981 928 in 1992 and I found a

1987 944S to purchase in 1996. I still have both of these

cars.

“My passion for the marque has always been threefold

for the whole family: Porsche / Audi /

Volkswagen. You may find me showing up for an

event in a Scirocco or my Turbo S Beetle.

“Having lifelong friends in the Corvette club, my par-

ents knew the value of car club membership and

promptly joined Fox Valley PCA back in 1992 and we

attended the Door County weekend with PCA (I was

navigator riding shotgun with FVPCA President Jim

Stephenson). I moved away from the Fox Valley a few

times over the years and allowed my membership to

lapse, but I never lost contact with many friends within

the club. Porsche owners come from all walks of life

and I often marvel at all the great people I've met

thanks to PCA. I don't know how I would have met

them otherwise. From dinner runs, tech sessions, cars

& coffee, picnics etc.., this club does a great job putting

together events not just car related but any excuse we

can think of just to get together. My wife Lorelei and I

have made many lifelong friends with this club and try

to give back as much as possible. “

Meet the board candidates

Tyler Hoffman took this photo of some of the Porsches that showed up for the last cars and coffee (a non-region event) in De Pere in the former Creamery, now called Toast & Co. Erik Scharinger also attended.

As you may know, the Milwaukee and Fox Valley PCA

regions will be hosting the 2021 PCA Fall Treffen at The

American Club in Kohler, Wis., from Oct. 13-17, 2021. This

is a tremendous honor and privilege to showcase what our

state has to offer to the rest of PCA.

We have formed a Treffen Planning team, made up of

members of both regions that will work with the PCA Na-

tional Treffen staff to help plan the event. Jim Janes, Fox

Valley Region Treasurer, is the Region Treffen Chair and I

am one of two volunteer recruiters. This event will require

many volunteers to create a five-star experience. A mini-

mum of approximately 50-60 volunteers will be needed

from our combined two regions. Many of you have already

contacted Shaun Stamnes or me with an offer to help and

we have documented those inquiries.

Treffen volunteers needed to achieve success Here are some of the areas where we will need volun-

teers. Time slots will be created based on the numbers of

volunteers.

• Registration (Wednesday)

• Information Desk (Wednesday-Saturday)

• Tour Departure Area (TBD)

• Tour Participation / Lead-Mid-Sweeps (Two days

TBD)

If you think you would like to volunteer in some capaci-

ty and have not contacted anyone, please reach out me

and I can provide additional information. I know Octo-

ber 2021 seems like a long way off, but it will go by fast

and we want you to be part of this exciting event.

In the November 1992 Whaletales, a story reported on a tour of Door County that also included a concours competition.

The winners of the concours were announced.

Jim Stephenson won the People’s choice award with his 356. Jeff Dreyfuss was the runner up with his white slantnose.

Fred Pesche took third place with a mint green slantnose. Fourth place went to editor Dave Hoern with his 1975 911S.

(Note: The editor at the time was not big on a lot of detail. No years given for the 356, the white slantnose and the mint

green slantnose.)

Of those noted above, Jim Stephenson has continued his membership throughout these 30 years. Thanks for staying

with us Jim.

Porsche owners are usually obsessive about the color

of their car. It’s not just “green,” but it is one of these

distinctive greens that were only available for one

Treffen Update

Jim Janes is the Treffen Planning Chair. We have currently established the Treffen Planning Team and are having Zoom meetings to discuss the different driving, NDO and individual tours. Jim can provide more detail. As one of the volunteer leads I am working with Tony from the Milwaukee Region to recruit people. I will be sending out a email blast to our region members to see if they are interested in volunteering. We have about half of the total volunteers needed so far. Would be great if we had some events to recruit as well. This will be my last year serving on the Fox Valley Region PCA Board. It has been an amazing past 7 years serving on this board in many positions. I have met so many new people and created many friendships along the way. I will still be here to help and attend as many events as possible. Thank you for all that you have done to make this club yours.

Treasurer Report (Jim Janes)

We are solvent. Since our notes are published and made public, the Secretary and Editor will not publish these num-bers. Although we do not publish these figures, interested members can contact the treasurer for a copy of this re-port. We have received our Quarterly rebate from PCA National.

Secretary Report (Mary Haen)

Please send all information (text and pictures) as an

attachment in your email. Do not let concerns about

spelling, grammar or the like prevent you from sharing

your story about your favorite Porsche or your extend-

ed family of Porsche friends – but please do include the

name of event, captions for photos, and the names of

people in photos. And don’t forget to include the name

of who took the picture. We appreciate member sub-

Classifieds FOR SALE: 2002 911 996 Cabriolet $28,500

911 996 Carrera Cabriolet 3.6 6-speed manual $28,500 39,600 miles Arctic Silver Metallic/Graphite Grey leather

This is a 2002 Porsche Carrera Cabriolet from a non-smoking family. It is decked out in Arctic Silver Metallic paint with

Graphite Grey leather seats and a black power top. The Bose AM/FM CD player with 6 disk CD changer sounds great.

There are dual power front seats with lumbar support and heat. Keyless entry, 18" wheels, Xenon headlights, flared

rocker panels, rear spoiler, clear bra and Porsche Crest embossed in the headrests makes this a beautiful car in beautiful

condition. Very clean inside and out. Stored during the winter and has not seen inclement weather. This car has been

serviced regularly with records to show. Regrettably the "silver bullet" doesn’t get much use now and needs a new

home.

For more info and photos contact: Wayne Slowinski 920-810-5148.
