Introduction to the ECE Department Cal Poly Pomona’s ECE Department is one of

the largest in the United States.

The Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredits our Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering degrees.

There are about 1,100 undergraduate and 100 active graduate students in our department.

Page 14: 1 Welcome To the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Cal Poly Pomona.

14

Introduction to the ECE Department

In our department we have: 18 full-time faculty 17 part-time faculty 5 staff

The University’s motto is “Learn by doing.” To meet this goal we have 20 laboratory rooms in our department. Two of our computer labs provide open access time where students may access department related software.

We offer relatively small class sizes and most lectures have accompanying lab classes for hands on instruction.

Page 15: 1 Welcome To the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Cal Poly Pomona.

15

Introduction to the ECE Department

All laboratory courses are taught by professors.

We offer year-round operation ( 3 quarters + summer quarter subject to budget), with most required major courses taught every quarter.

It is mandatory for our students to see their academic advisor during the winter quarter for annual advising.

Advice: Take one math class per quarter

Page 22: 1 Welcome To the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Cal Poly Pomona.

22

Mathematics and English Placement Tests

English Placement Test (EPT)

Entry Level Mathematics Exam (ELM)

Unless exempt you need to take one or both of these tests. Take them as soon as possible if you plan on enrolling in Mathematics and/or English in the fall quarter.

24

Exemptions to the EPT

A score of 550 or above on the verbal section of the College Board SAT I: Reasoning Test.

A score of 680 or above on the College Board SAT II: Writing Test

A score of 24 or above on the Enhanced ACT English Test.

A score of 3, 4 or 5 on either the Language and Composition or the Literature and Composition Examination of the College Board

Advance Placement Program (AP Credit).

Transfer students who have completed a CSU college course that satisfies the English Composition a requirement with a C or better based upon the requirements from the college they are currently

attending.

Page 25: 1 Welcome To the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Cal Poly Pomona.

25

Entry-Level Mathematics (ELM)

The CSU Entry-Level Mathematics examination must be taken and scores received by all nonexempt undergraduates prior to enrollment in any mathematics course.

Exemptions: A score of 550 or above on the mathematics section of either the

College Board SAT or SAT 1: Reasoning Test A score of 550 or above on Level I, 1C, II or IIC of either the

College Board Mathematics Achievement test of SAT II: Mathematics Test.

A score of 23 or above on the ACT Mathematics Test. A score of 3 or above on the College Board Advanced Placement

Mathematics Examination (Calculus AB or BC or Statistics Examination (AP Credit)

Exception from the ELM Test DOES NOT exempt you from taking the MDPT!

Page 26: 1 Welcome To the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Cal Poly Pomona.

26

Mathematics Diagnostic Placement Test (MDPT)

If you are exempt from the ELM, then you are required to take the MDPT unless you meet one of the following conditions:

Met the prerequisites for MAT 114 or higher within two quarters of entering Cal Poly Pomona

OR

Are a first-time freshman who scored 3 or higher on the College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Examination Credit test in either Calculus AB or BC.

Sign up for the MDPT (watch for an email telling you how, or contact the Math Dept.).

MAT 114 or above is your goal!

Page 27: 1 Welcome To the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Cal Poly Pomona.

27

MDPT Preparation

Prepare for the MDPT. Do not take it cold!

A poor score on the MDPT will set you back several quarters.

Page 28: 1 Welcome To the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Cal Poly Pomona.

28

Student Orientation Services (SOS)

ATTEND THE UNIVERSITY’S MANDATORY STUDENT ORIENTATION THIS SUMMER!

You will receive your MDPT scores and academic advising and priority registration for your fall classes!

29

How do I do well in the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department?

Study Hard!

Two to three hours of study for each class hour.

Pace yourself

Take no more than 12 units your first quarter.

Take no more than 16 units per quarter if you do not work/ take fewer units if you work.

Take one or two courses in the summer quarter.

Continue to work hard.
