EDITORIAL

What a rush it’s been to get thisissue out on time what with thethunderstorms that have preventedme from using my computer (allpower off when there’s lightningabout!!) to losing another wholeday of my normal layout time to

attend the Show on Saturday.Weren’t we our usual luckyselves missing al the rainthroughout the morning andafternoon, although thoseattending the Ceilidh in theevening weren’t quite sofortunate. Thank you to everyonewho came and spoke to us andespecial y to those who told uswhat a wonderful magazine thisis, even though it embarrasses meto hear it. I may receive the praisebut it wouldn’t happen without alot of others doing their bit as

well, I‘m just here to ‘steer theship’.

We’ve struggled to make space toget everything in this month andwe wanted to have more

pictures of the Show but had tosettle for just the front page but ifwe’ve room we’l publish somemore next month.

Ideas For The Summer Holidays

‘Mummy Boredombuster’ here…. With the ever so long summerholidays coming up and

several children between the agesof 7 and 10 to entertain wedecided to make a sandcastle

bucket list. Kinda like a normalbucket list, but obviously forlittler peeps …

In previous years we have madeteddy bear zipwires, tarpaulinedthe garden and gunged

everyone and even hung lots ofdrink cans around the garden as anerf target arena, but

this year I decided to pass theplanning over to those who know! The sprogs …

The kidlets were given a short setof rules for the summer holidayactivity plan … They

must come up with ten activitiesthey have not done before, theymust not be days out or

cost much money and most of allthey must all be something theyhave never done before.

So many activities are possiblewith children’s imagination.Things we as parents think

do not sound ‘fun’ to a childactually can turn out to be theopposite … The kids are soooo

excited with the idea of havingtheir lunch served on a trolleywhich they pay for with

pretend money it made their topten …

Give your kids a piece of paper,and see what ideas they may comeup with … who

knows, you may end up having achuckle or two in the process aswell ….

Part-Night Lighting is beingrolled out in Thanet

Over the past few weeks Thanet

has had its KCC street lights inselected areas switched off

under the part-night lightingprogramme.

Part-night lighting means somelights are turned off betweenaround midnight and

5:30am (1am and 6:30am duringBritish Summer Time).

75% of those who responded toKCC’s recent consultation, on theproposed hours of switch

off and the exclusion criteria,supported the proposals.

Implementing part-night lightingwill save around £1million peryear on energy bills, will

help protect the environment andwill reduce light pollution.

Part-night lighting started inThanet on 19 May 2014, with theaverage roll out period being

three to four weeks.

WW1 Exhibition- "Our Parish"at St. Nicholas-at-Wade Church

Saturday, Sunday and Monday,2nd, 3rd and 4th August 10am to

5pm.

Illustrated mini-biographies of 21servicemen from the parish, whogave their lives in the First WorldWar, will be displayed in thisexhibition.

A commemorative brochure willbe available.

The exhibition will also includedetails of other men of the parishwho survived the conflict.

On Monday 4th August there will

be a Sung Evensong Service ofCommemoration in the

Church at 6.30pm with familiarhymns. Refreshments available.

Minster Playhouse - PromptCorner

During the week leading up toSaturday 5 July the weather wasabsolutely gorgeous and we all

kept our fingers crossed that this

would continue, because that wasthe date of the first MinsterPlayhouse Charity Summer Fair tobe held in the lovely gardens ofThe Bell. We actually started onFriday evening, erecting a largemarquee, the question raised washow many Playhouse

members does it take to put up atent? The answer was quite a few,but to be fair we did not

know what the marquee lookedlike when up, we were not sure if

we had all the parts, neither

were we sure all the bits we hadwere for that marquee. However,with luck, skill, the Internet and afew dashes between Ramsgateand Minster the job got done. Alloff into The Bell for a

well-deserved pint.

First thing Saturday morning wasgrey, cloudy and drizzly. Takesmore than that to put MinsterPlayhouse off though, and ourteam of committee and other

supporters swung into action.Using Peter’s trusty trailer weferried costumes, scenery, hats,wigs and a ton of other stuff fromour store at Abbey Farm, bywhich time the rain had stoppedand the sun was trying to come out–

hooray ! Our stall holders startedto arrive and by 10am we had 7trade stands and a bouncy

castle up and ready. Ourvolunteers were all good to go,

dressed up in various costumes.We had Pirates, Principal Boys,Elvis Presley, a guest appearancefrom Peter Pan’s Crocodile andthree, yes three, Dames.

Now the nervous period, waitingto see if anybody would arrive forthe official opening at

11am. Arrive they did, throughoutthe day and in their droves. Theweather was absolutely

brilliant and very hot for those ofus in costume, but we all had a

great day. On sale was

jewellery, hand-made cards, gifts,confectionery and, best in mybook, Sally’s cake stall sellingthe most amazing range ofcupcakes, including one toppedwith bacon and maple syrup –sounds

really weird but, if you get achance try one, absolutelydelicious. In addition were face-painting, tuition in circus skillsand a tent for kids, full of felt tips,

crayons and a million Loom-Bands! The cream of local singingtalent kept us entertained withlive music all day, and The Belldid a brisk trade dispensing hot-dogs and burgers.

However, the highlight of the Fairhad to be the Dames Games tent.Three of our guys needed

surprisingly little persuasion todon wigs, dresses, makeup andfalse bosoms, to front a selectionof outdoor games, which included

an electronic skill test, passing aloop along a twisted metal tube, acoconut shy (yours truly knockeddown 3 with 6 balls during apractice session) and trying toknock down a stack of cans byhurling bean bags at them in TinCan Alley. However, the best ofthe Dames Games was throwingwet sponges at somebodyimprisoned in the stocks. As first

the Dames themselves were the‘volunteer’ targets, but as the daywore on folk were putting

husbands, wives and even theirchildren in the stocks. We sawsome very passionate throwing

from a number of familymembers, who were obviouslyevening up some long-standingscores!

Throughout the day our PrincipalBoys sold a shed-load of raffletickets for some wonderful

prizes, all contributed by friends,volunteers and our traders,including a very generous one

from the Holiday Inn of a freenight’s room and breakfast. Theraffle, together with the proceedsfrom Dames Games and a pitchfee from our traders raised over£250 for our sponsored charity

‘Cardiac Risk in the Young’.

At about 4pm we said goodbye tothe last of our visitors and startedpacking up, marquees are mucheasier to take down than put up!Just as we finished, it started torain again, but did we care?

Certainly not! We’d all had abrilliant day full of fun and goodmusic, and we had raised a decentamount for CRY, so once we hadrestored the garden to how wefound it, it was off for

another well-deserved pint.

Dear Editor and Minsterians?,

As a newly arrived resident I firstbecame aware of our village lessthan three months ago. I

immediately fell in love with it,together with a bungalow which Ihave subsequently purchased.

Such a contrast to READINGwhere I was born during the war,although my roots have traced

back to a small village nearNewbury for twelve generations.(sorry another story). I have“village life” in my blood.

Despite the community spirit andabundance of activities, I have yetto find fellow travellers (

and women) who have an interestin railways, model, or real, andalso “social bridge”. Both

flourish in nearbyCANTERBURY with manyBridge clubs organised by U3Aand also three model

railway societies. Bridge may bemore of a pastime for women butrailways are certainly not theexclusive province for men. Ihave known several femalerailway enthusiasts and indeed I

met

my ex-wife at such an exhibition.

If my letter is not severelyreduced by your editor andprovokes an interest, I would be

pleased to hear from devoteeswith a view to forming two moreinterest groups in the village.

NEW DEFIBRILLATORS

I recently attended a two hourtraining session in Minster libraryon the new

defibrillators which can be foundin the village. Defibrillators helpto restore a normal heart rhythmafter a heart attack has occurredso possibly saving someone’slife. The session

included the basic lifesavingskills of mouth to mouthresuscitation and cardiac

compressions plus instruction onthe use of a defibrillator. Thetraining was easy to follow

with a practical session.

The village has twodefibrillators, one outside ofBen’s and the other outside theVillage

Hall. More training sessions willbe happening and I would urgeyou to enrol for this short

but comprehensive course which

may help you save a life.

I WALK THE MINSTER HILL

I walk the Minster hill, it is quitea climb.

Nearly always around the sametime.

I see these birds when I nearlyreach the top.

Pretty Goldfinches, in the almost

the same spot.

They fly from the hedges thatborder the hill.

A delightful picture to see, thoughthey do not stay still.

Some days I see four or five ofthese pretty creatures.

Their red, white and blackcolours

being their distinctive features.

I really feel fortunate to see thesebirds

on my walks each day.

Perhaps one day you might seethem too,

if you walk my way.

Healthy Eating Week 2 - 6 June

What a fantastic week we had!

Minster School took part inHealthy Eating Week again thisyear, organised by the

British Heart Foundation.

Over 1.5 million children fromover 3,400 schools and nurseriesacross the UK took part

in the week which aims topromote healthy eating, cookingand awareness of where food

comes from, to children of allages.

The children enjoyed lots ofactivities around healthy eatingand exercise, such as talks

about the Eat Well plate and First

Aid training.

Some children designed a SpaceMeal for British astronaut TimPeake, who is going to

the International Space Station in2015. The children found thischallenging and great fun!

The Space Meal needed a hint ofBritish(ness), to remind Tim ofhome, I presume! Heston

Blumenthal will be judging theentries soon, so watch this

‘space’!

The School Council organised ateddy bears picnic at school andall the children made

their healthy wraps in themorning. Unfortunately, theweather wasn’t good enough to

have a school picnic on the field,so classes played games in theschool hall after eating theirwraps. The wraps looked verytasty and I was pleased to seechildren trying different foods

for the first time and enjoyingwhat they had made.

We are very proud to be a healthyschool, and are looking forwardto participating in

next year’s healthy Eating Week.

SAFEGUARDING ALERT

It has been brought to ourattention that two people giving

the name Dr & Mrs Whitfield

have attended a church coffeemorning in the diocese with aview to conducting healing

sessions for those with pain ordisabilities. We cannot be certainof this man’s credentials

and there has been somecomplaint of inappropriatecontact and unorthodox healing

methods. He has also suggestedpurchasing vitamin and other

supplements via a website

called Woodshealth which hasreceived very bad online reviewsrecommending that the site

is not used to purchase theseitems. The man is described as inhis fifties, with an English

accent and he has a beard. If thesepeople do any events and start togive medical advice or

offer healing then the advice isthat they should be asked to leave

the meeting.

Minster School PFA

We have a couple of dates foryou!! The PFA AGM is on 25September 6.30pm at the

school. All welcome, especiallyour new committee members!!!Please come along.

At the moment the provisionaldate for our Christmas Fair is 5

December after school -

3.30pm until 5.00pm.

We would like to thank the localbusinesses and members of thecommunity for their

support of the Summer Fair. Theresponse we had for prizedonations was both enormous

and very generous and made theraffle truly spectacular this year.We will be sending

personal letters of thanks to thebusinesses concerned.

Also a big thank you to all thefamilies, friends, parents andresidents of Minster for

attending the fair, despite the rainit was good to see so many of youand we raised just

over £2000, which is fantasticgiven the weather.

WHEN ‘THANK YOU’ JUSTDOESN’T SEEM ENOUGH!

It all started with a request forhelp on Facebook for one of theelderly ladies I help look

after, Lilly Spicer, she is 85 andhas lived in the village for 50+years. Her husband had a fallmonths ago and is still in hospitalnow, Lilly was getting verydepressed obviously being on

her own, she always spoke sofondly about how lovely her

garden used to be. Her garden

was very overgrown with yearsof accumulated rubbish, andweeds that were all above our

heads ... these are the people thatturned up to help ... MirandaKeene, Karen Edmundson,

Gemma Hollands, Emily andBonnie Johnson, MadalaineShaw, Bo Small, David Loweryaka

(Beetle) and myself. Everyone

came with gardening tools and weall worked to try to clear a

space big enough so Lilly couldbe safe in the garden and sit out inthe sunshine. The garden was fullof nasty insects. None of us verykeen on any of them or very bravewhen they

came running out, then there werethe slow worms, kindly rehomedin a safe environment

by Beetle. We all went homefilthy dirty and not smelling very

sweet but satisfied we had

made a good start.

Robert Edmundson, Karen’shusband heard about what wewere trying to do and said

the company he works for, AmeyLtd of Sandwich, might be able tohelp. Well help they did,

they sent 10 men, a Hiab lorry,industrial tools and equipment.They all worked so hard and

cleared the garden from top tobottom strimming, cutting backhedges and trees. They took

away 3 and a half lorry loads ofrubbish and even laid a patio, allfor free. I cannot get over howkind they all were lots of laughson the day too. The kindness thiscompany showed for

somebody they had never metbefore was wonderful. Theyshould all be so proud of

themselves. Thank you just

doesn’t seem enough. Also athank you must go to the

donations of table and chairs,pots, baskets, and bird feeder.Thank you to the New Inn for

donating the hand rails, whichwere put up by one of the ladsfrom Amey Ltd.

Thanet NHW Zone 10

As Minster appears to have beensuffering a ‘more than normal’spate of burglaries in

recent weeks, now seems anappropriate time to promote someself-help in the form of

Neighbourhood Watch.

Would you like to see your streetcovered by the NeighbourhoodWatch Scheme? You

can help us by volunteering as aNeighbourhood Watch Co-

Ordinator. It is not very timeconsuming and your involvementcould also help others in yourarea. The only stipulation is

that you must be able to receivemessages from the NHW Desk, atMargate Police Station,

by email – sadly they no longersend messages by telephone. Theaim is, in time, to cover

the whole of the village.

Twinning Association

It is with great sadness that wehave to report that the Mayor of

Armbouts Cappel, Jean-

Luc, lost his wife suddenly thismonth, and we offer our sincerecondolences.

The Twinning has been keepingbusy throughout the last month.We were invited to the

Primary School BBQ on 17 Junewhen the school hosted a day offun for the French school

children from Armbouts Cappelalong with some of their parents

and some teachers. The

Twinning made a donation to helpthe proceedings. Prior to thefiring up of the BBQ, the childrenamused themselves withplayground games where theyintegrated well. The

French adults attempted to speakEnglish to us and likewise wetried to reciprocate with our

broken school-day French. Agood time was had by all, youngand old alike.

A meeting was held on 15 Julywith Kirsty Alentis, Vice Head ofthe school, to further

relationships with regard tosupporting each other in thefuture.

The Bowls Open Day on 22 Junewas very successful. We entered2 teams: Lads and

Lasses. Both teams werenarrowly beaten in their firstgames, but on entering the plate

competition, both got through tothe semi-finals. A good effort forvirtual ‘non players’.

On 29 June, Armbouts Cappelhosted their annual ‘Ducasse’.This began with a parade

around the village including aband, majorettes, the MinsterCarnival Court and the giants.

The parade was followed by abuffet lunch, throughout which wewere entertained by

various musical and singing acts.The atmosphere was electric andtheir village hall was

soon buzzing with variousdancing skills (or not!) from bothsides of the channel.

We were also invited to attend theGiants’ Day (Geants desFlandres) on 13 July in the

neighbouring village of Rubrouck.White vans arrived at the startingpoint where numerous

body parts were unloaded! Afterabout an hour, these weremiraculously transformed into

27 giants, ranging from 10ft – 20ft(3 to 3.6 mtrs) in height. Somewere on metal frames,

others on wicker, some had to bewalked around laboriously andothers flowed easily on

castors! All the giants wereaccompanied by dancers ormusicians whilst they paraded

around. This ended outside thevillage hall and the consensuswas that a good day was had

by all. If you ever get the chanceto witness this event, it is wellworth the trip.

MINSTER BOWLS CLUB

The good news for July waswelcoming 10 new members intothe Club, five or six of

them having got ‘the bug’ at ourrecent Open Day.

An excellent social evening washad with the "Steam Boat” JazzBand. It really came

alight when a trombone playerjoined the group for about an hourhalf way through the

evening.

We were pleased to see the EastKent Bowls Association visit uson the Wednesday 2

July and they went away withstomachs full of steak puddingsthat Ian had served.

This was followed later in themonth with the Isle of ThanetLadies President bringing

her Ladies Champions to play forthe honour of becoming AreaChampion.

Looking forward to Friday 15August we host a group of ladiestrying their hand at

bowling whilst at the same timeraising money for Breast Cancer.Why not come along and

see these non-bowlers enjoyingthemselves, whilst maybepartaking of a drink from our bar,

and possibly donating yourchange to this very worthy cause.

Friday 29 August we have yetanother social evening, includinga buffet and listening to

"Robbie Williams". All are

welcome.

Friday 26 September sees theclub hosting Billy Brown whowas an original member of

the group "Hot Chocolate".Further details on this next month,all are welcome, book for a seator table.

MINSTER-IN-THANET WI

7.30 on 8 July in Minster VillageHall saw members gathered forthe monthly meeting.

President Sarah Eaton-Brownwelcomed everyone and amongother things outlined details

of our Minster Show 'RioCarnival' Float and 'fruity themed'stall. She also invited

members, their families andfriends to a 'Bat n Trap' and Fishn Chip picnic evening in the

Rec at 5.30pm on 12 August. Thisis a fun get together event as thereis no meeting in

August.

Sarah congratulated our team forcoming second in the WI TopTeam Quiz on 4 July and

sent thanks to Marion for hostingthe Strawberry Tea in her garden.She also outlined

details of the EKFWI photocompetition for inclusion in theCentenary Baton, asking

members to bring photos to ournext meeting as the winners will

be entered in the

Federation's competition.

The 'Steel Magnolia' performanceby Minster Playhouse on Saturday27 September will see

Minster WI providing CreamTeas for the audience. Sarah alsopointed out to members

that the Institute has a Facebookpage!

Members were then invited into

the 'Craft Corners' where theymade exotic flowers for the

float and helped paint signs etc.Refreshments were served and allmingled in the

particularly friendly and relaxedatmosphere which is Minster WI.

After reminding everyone thatthere is no meeting in August, thenext being on 9

September, Sarah closed theproceedings with an amusing

story.

Not enjoying all the thunder andsuch like that we’ve been havingrecently. I’m a bit of a cowardwhere that’s concerned and Iusually try hiding behind myfavourite armchair. If we’vealready gone to bed, before itstarts, I have to leave him to fendfor himself whilst I go back down

and hide under the stairs.

I know I’m a terrier and that Ishould be braver but it is my oneweakness , I excel at all otherthings a dog should do like sortingthe postman and the local cats butmy psyche just can’t cope withrain and storms. There it is we allhave our dislikes, the boss manisn’t too keen on meeting andtalking to strangers, although Ithink he tries to put a brave faceon it when he’s confronted withpeople talking about this

magazine or any of the otherthings he’s involved with in thevillage. Such is life!!

Year 6 Hindleap Trip

For the pupils that went toHindleap, it has been one of themain highlights of Year 6. It has

been both education, fun andfull of opportunities.

I would highly recommend it.

Year 6 Activity Week

For the Year 6 children whodecided not go to Hindleap, wehad a great Activity Week. One

day it is calm and relaxing, thenext it is lively and adventurous,full of exciting plans and fantastic

experiences! I would definitelyrecommend this.

Year 5 French Residential Trip

At the beginning of term, someYear 5 children visited differentplaces in Northern France

for 3 days.

This was a fantastic opportunityto experience French culture andconverse in the French

language.

We had a brilliant time and havebrought back many life longmemories!

The picture in the magazineshows us outside our chalets inAmbleteuse enjoying the

glorious weather! At our Centrewe took part in various sportactivities like swimming,

cricket and football eachafternoon. On Thursday evening

(after another outfit change of

course) we danced our socks offat the disco - teachers included!

While some of the Year 5 were inFrance, the rest of us had awonderful time enjoying the

fine hot weather here at Minsterand out and about in Margate. Ourfocus for the week was

exploring artists and their work.We looked in detail at the work ofAndy Goldsworthy, an

artist who uses nature as hisinspiration. We collected lots offound objects around the

school grounds and put themtogether to make our ownsculptures. We filmed our workon

the iPads, so that we could speedup the film of our work, like amini ‘Art Attack’

programme on TV!
