WHY A STUDY ON BIBLICAL KEYS TO HEALTHY LIVING? 1. Because your _____________ Life is Interconnected with your Spiritual and Emotional Life. God
created man to be triune in nature: Body, Soul, and Spirit. I have found that when I am discipline myself physically, I also stay more disciplined spiritually as well.
2. How I feel physically can affect my ______________ life. For example, if I am always tired and lethargic, I am not going to feel like praying as I ought. If I don’t get enough rest at night, I will be irritable the next day.
3. God commands us to ____________ the Lord in our bodies. 1 Corinthians 6:20, “For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify (honor) God in your body.” One way you honor the body is by taking care of it. You treat it as valuable. You are a one-‐of-‐a-‐kind. God has a purpose He wants you to fulfill and if you die a premature death, you won’t be around to fulfill it.
4. Because Your Body is God’s _____________. “Do you not know that your body is the temple (the very sanctuary) of the Holy Spirit Who lives within you, Whom you have received [as a Gift] from God? You are not your own.” – I Cor. 6:19. Your body is your God-‐given instrument for experience life on Earth and for doing good works. You need to maintain God’s temple. It’s not only the house that you live in—it’s the house that God lives in.
*In the Old Testament, God had a temple for his ____________; in the New Testament, God has a people for His _______________.
I. You Can Honor God With Your Body By __________ __________ Sometimes, the most spiritual thing we can do is to take a 30 minute walk in the evening or to get a good nights rest. What are people’s number one excuse for not exercising? ___________________________ Paul said in 1 Timothy 4:8, “For, the training of the body has a limited benefit, but godliness is beneficial in every way, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” Back in Biblical times, they walked every where they went. Jesus routinely walked from His home in Galilee to Jericho – a 120 mile journey. Today we live sedentary lifestyles. We live in a culture of comfort. But that means that we need to be more proactive in order to compensate. The people who lived the longest and were the most healthy were those who still lived in the culture where they walked everywhere. When we do not exercise we get out of _______________.
Honoring God With Your Body
What Happens When You Exercise? Endorphins are the body’s natural pain medication hormones. Endorphins, when they’re released, make us feel better, improve our mood, increase pleasure, and minimize pain. There are some good ways, and bad ways, to increase endorphins. Nan Allison writes: “High concentrations of endorphins in the brain produce a sense of euphoria, enhance pleasure, and suppress pain, both emotionally and physically. When endorphins are low, people feel anxious; they are also more aware of pain. They have an appetite for fatty foods, such as fries, cheese, creamy sauces, margarine, butter, fried chicken, potato chips, and chocolate, to name some of the most popular examples. Upon eating some fat, they will notice a change in mood, feeling more pleasure. This feeling is related to a higher concentration of endorphin. Exercise, by releasing fat from within the body, raises endorphins and causes the same mood changes.”
A WALNUT looks like a little brain, a left and right hemisphere, upper cerebrums and lower cerebellums. Even the wrinkles or folds on the nut are just like the neo-‐cortex. We now know walnuts help develop more than three (3) dozen neuron-‐transmitters for brain function. KIDNEY BEANS actually heal and help maintain kidney function and yes, they look exactly like the human kidneys. CELERY, BOK CHOY, and RHUBARB and many more look just like bones. These foods specifically target bone strength. Bones are 23% sodium and these foods are 23% sodium. If you don't have enough sodium in your diet, the body pulls it from the bones, thus making them weak. These foods replenish the skeletal needs of the body. AVOCADOES, EGGPLANT, and PEARS target the health and function of the womb and cervix of the female -‐ they look just like these organs. Today's research shows that when a woman eats one avocado a week, it balances hormones, sheds unwanted birth weight, and prevents cervical cancers. And how profound is this? It takes exactly nine (9) months to grow an avocado from blossom to ripened fruit. There are over 14,000 photolytic chemical constituents of nutrition in each one of these foods (modern science has only studied and named about 141 of them). FIGS are full of seeds and hang in twos when they grow. Figs increase the mobility of male sperm and increase the numbers of sperm as well to overcome male sterility. SWEET POTATOES look like the pancreas and actually balance the glycemic index of diabetics. OLIVES assist the health and function of the ovaries. ORANGES, GRAPEFRUITS, and OTHER CITRUS FRUITS look just like the mammary glands of the female and actually assist the health of the breasts and the movement of lymph in and out of the breasts. ONIONS look like the body's cells. Today's research shows onions help clear waste materials from all of the body cells. They even produce tears which wash the epithelial layers of the eyes. A working companion, Garlic, also helps eliminate waste materials and dangerous free radicals from the body.

What is a type of exercise that would “work” for you? ________________________________________________ ________________________________________________ HINT: Throughout the day, find those little things that will help you stay in shape. (Example: Take the stairs instead of the elevator/escalator).
II. You Can Honor God with Your Body By _________ __________ In Bible times, people went to sleep when it got dark and they got up when the sun rose, refreshed and renewed. When we get the proper sleep – our minds discharge all the ___________ from the previous day. Psalm 30:5, “...weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.” When we sleep, blood is restored to our muscles and it restores any damages that were done during the day. FACT: 100 years ago, the average American got 9 hours of sleep at night. Today the average person gets less than 7.
100 years ago, the major cause of death is infection Today, the major cause of death is stress related. Every hour that we sleep before 2 o’clock in the morning is equivalent to sleeping 2 hours later on. For instance, if you went to bed at 10 o’clock and you slept until 2 AM, that would be the equivalent of getting 8 hours of sleep during the day. When you get it early on, it is more beneficial. Doctors are finding today that a major cause of ________________ is that people are just not getting enough sleep. Just as there are consequences when we break God’s spiritual laws, there are consequences when we break His physical laws as well. So many Christians are praying for a miracle—but they don’t need a miracle – they need a _____________ change. Many times, we’re waiting on God—but God is waiting on us. God has created our bodies to _________ themselves – many times, if you will put it in the right conditions – it will correct things on its own. If you have a physical ailment – put your body in a condition so that it can heal. Ricky Mantle said, “If I would have known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself.”

III. You Can Honor God with Your Body by __________ __________ Our body was not made to live off of junk food. In Biblical times, they did not eat processed or refined foods. They ate natural foods that were alive (fruits, grains, vegetables). When it come to proper nutrition, we need to learn to do all things in ________________. NOTE: Pay attention to how you feel after you eat certain foods. You have to put the right nutrition in your stomach if you want your mind and brain to work properly. (If you are going to drive your car, you have to make sure you put the right fuel into it.) DID YOU KNOW: The average person consumes ______ lbs. of sugar each year. That’s more than the average body weight. Proverbs 25:27, “Do not eat too much honey.”
God’s Pharmacy! Scripture says that God first separated the salt water from the fresh, made dry land, planted a garden, made animals and fish... all before making a human. He made and provided what we'd need before we were born. These are best & more powerful when eaten raw. God left us a great clue as to what foods help what part of our body!
A sliced CARROT looks like the human eye. The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye... and YES, science now shows carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes.
A TOMATO has four chambers and is red. The heart has four chambers and is red. All of the research shows tomatoes are loaded with lycopine and are indeed pure heart and blood food.
5 Reasons Why You Should Take a Nap Everyday A lot of people think negatively about “taking a nap” as they feel that it’s a sign of laziness. However, many of the Fortune 500 companies are starting to provide “Sleep Pods” for their employees to take a nap after lunch in order to increase productivity. Some of the world’s most successful people were ardent nappers. Leonardo da Vinci took multiple naps a day and slept less at night. The French Emperor Napoleon was not shy about taking naps. He indulged daily. Though Thomas Edison was embarrassed about his napping habit, he also practiced his ritual daily. Eleanor Roosevelt, the wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, used to boost her energy by napping before speaking engagements. President John F. Kennedy ate his lunch in bed and then settled in for a nap—every day! Oil industrialist and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller napped every afternoon in his office. Winston Churchill’s afternoon nap was a non-‐negotiable. He believed it helped him get twice as much done each day. President Lyndon B. Johnson took a nap every afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in order to break his day up into “two shifts.” Though criticized for it, President Ronald Reagan famously took naps as well. Could these successful leaders know something you don’t? Turns out there are at least 5 benefits to napping:
Exercise and Osteoporosis Physicians did a study with individuals in their 80’s. They had them start lifting small weights and they discovered that their bones stopped deteriorating and did not become brittle or frail like other individuals struggling with osteoporosis. They stronger and they maintained their muscles. Osteoporosis is very common today but historians tell us that there wasn’t much of this condition a hundred years ago—because people remained so much more active than we are today.”
1. A nap restores _____________. The National Sleep Foundation recommends a short nap of 20–30 minutes “for improved alertness and performance without leaving you feeling groggy or interfering with nighttime sleep.”
2. A nap prevents ________________. In our always-‐on culture, we go, go, go. However, we were not meant to race without rest. Doing so leads to stress, frustration, and burnout. Taking a nap is like a system reboot. It relieves stress and gives you a fresh start.
3. A nap heightens sensory ______________. According to Dr. Sandra C. Mednick, author of Take a Nap, Change Your Life, napping can restore the sensitivity of sight, hearing, and taste. Napping also improves your creativity by relaxing your mind and allowing new associations to form in it.
4. Reduces the risk of _____________ disease. Did you know that those who take a midday siesta at least three times a week are 37% less likely to die of heart disease? Working men are 64% less likely! It’s true, according to a 2007 study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Dimitrios Trichopoulos, of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, who led the study said, “Taking a nap could turn out to be an important weapon in the fight against coronary mortality.”
5. Makes you more _________________. Numerous medical studies have shown workers becoming increasingly more unproductive as the day wears on. But a 2002 Harvard University study demonstrated a 30 minute nap boosted the performance of workers, returning their productivity to beginning-‐of-‐the-‐day levels.
The most important thing to remember is keep it short. A 20-‐30 minute nap is perfect. Avoid “sleep inertia,” that feeling of grogginess and disorientation that can come from awakening from a deep sleep.
