Audio Transcripts:
Speaker 1: Daisy
I study a lot, so I don’t get to watch much TV. I like to keep up
with current affairs. Those shows are on at six, so I watch them at
school. My favorite show is an educational program. It’s on Tuesdays,
and it’s about how people have changed the planet. They interview
scientists about technology. I’m also interested in space movies on TV. I
like to watch comedies, but they can be terrible sometimes. Last
Monday, I watched a bad one about a hospital. I don’t stay up too late
because I have to get up early. Most late-night television is stupid
anyway!

Speaker 2: Chris
When I get home, I immediately turn the TV on. I like sports
shows and reality shows best. The reality series I watch is broadcast
after ten most nights, so I usually stay up late. The narrator has a great
voice. I also like soap operas. There’s one on three times a week about a
small town. The characters are fun. I prefer imaginative shows. If an
educational one comes on, I change the channel. As a viewer, I’m easy
to please. Just don’t make me watch news! It’s not my thing at all.

I’ve been working in TV for about 20 years now. Live television is
amazing. You never know what’s going to happen next. I was a
newscaster for around ten years before I got my own talk show. Now, I
get to interview lots of interesting people. While I like my job, I’m a little
disappointed with the way that television has changed over the last 20
years. There are more commercials than ever. Also, if you’re channel
surfing, you mostly see cartoons, reality shows, and soap operas. I
have no problem with television as entertainment, but I think that
current affairs and educational shows are more important. Imaginative
shows can provide information and fun.

I work 12 hours a day, six days a week. I don’t do this because I
love my job. Actually, I hate it. The problem is I don’t know how to say
no. I feel nervous, and I can’t sleep at night. My friends tell me to loosen
up. But how can I relax? Every time I close my eyes, I see my boss’ face.
I wish I could simply come home, put my feet up, and think about
nothing. I know I have to change. If I don’t change, it’s going to affect my
health. Do you have any advice for me?

I can’t control my temper. I need to take it easy, but I don’t know
how. Everything bothers me. The weather, traffic, and even people get
on my nerves. If someone says, “Ryan, you should chill out,” I get upset.
Things are getting really bad. Last week, I almost hit a police officer. Why
did I almost do this? Well, he stopped me and gave me a ticket for
speeding. Later, when I was calm, I knew he was just doing his job.
Besides, he was right: I was driving too fast. I must change. If I don’t, I’m
going to get in a lot of trouble.

Martin: Congratulations on your promotion, Erin. How does it feel to be
calling the shots?
Erin: Well, it’s more fun telling people what to do than following orders.
Plus, I’ve got a big office with a great view now.
Martin: Lucky you.
Erin: Maybe I am lucky. But there’s still a lot of responsibility that comes
with being the top dog.
Martin: That’s what every boss says. I don’t believe it though. I want to be
in the driver’s seat someday.
Erin: Alright. But remember this: If I do a bad job, everyone will notice. If
you do poorly, only your team is going to know.
Martin: Give me a break. You can just find someone to blame it on.
Erin: Wow! You really don’t think it’s hard to be the boss, do you? I’ll have
to be careful around you.

People often worry the effect of TV watching on children, but
television doesn’t just affect children. Studies show that
television influences everyone in many ways.
52
Reading
Shows about police and law are popular and affect the way
people see the courtroom. Lawyers once blamed the legal
drama Perry Mason for making juries hesitate to find people
guilty. Guilty people in Perry Mason usually make a dramatic
admission of guilt, and juries expected this to happen in real
life. Today, people blame the crime show CSI for influencing
juries. In CSI, evidence from a laboratory is always reliable, so
juries place a lot of trust in certain kinds of evidence. This is
called the “CSI Effect.”
53
Reading
Shows about hospitals are also changing the way people thin
k. Doctors say that some patients like to guess why they are si
ck after watching shows like ER. Most of these guesses are w
rong, but one woman, Alexandria Ostrem, recognized the rare
disease she had because of the drama House.

Jane, and I watch a lot of television. I like to watch things online as well. Then you can watch whole seasons. I’ve been doing that for a year or so. I like sitcoms because they really make me laugh. My favorite show right now is Archer. I’ve been watching it since it came out. I like to come home, put my feet up, and relax. As a viewer, my biggest problem is commercials. I’m disappointed when they come on. I just want to watch the show! I used to watch reality shows, but I can’t stand them now. I don’t like live television or game shows either. I want characters instead of newscasters and hosts.
Task IIWrite a passage (80-120 words) about your television habits. Use some of the words and phrases below. Include two examples of the present perfect continues.
