A Fraternal Organization

The state convention was held June 5 - 8. We had a lot to do and learn. The officers for 2014 - 2015 were installed and Tom Hougham will be our new state president. This was my first state convention and there was a lot of information to pick up. The pro-grams that we as Elks fund are some of the biggest and best in the

world. The ENF, the Sweetheart, Drug Awareness, Hoop Shoot funds go to help those less fortunate in our communities. This is in the millions we give. The na-tional convention will be in July and will be in New Orleans. I would love to see all who can make it there. On June 7th we had a memorial for our departed brother Carl Booker at the United Disciples Church in Richardson. It was well-attended and the officers performed their duties very, very well. Thanks to Bob Finch, PSP who did the chimes for the 11 o’clock toast. Thank you also to Frank Krejci, Lead-ing Knight, Brenda Taylor, Loyal Knight, Patrick Laurie, Lecturing Knight, and Shirley G. Selman our Chaplain. I hope to see you in New Orleans; if not may I at least see you at the Lodge? Come out and have a good time.

ELKS LOVE ONE ANOTHER.

OFFICERS 2014-2015

cont. on pg. 3

The flag is the symbol of our country. There is great symbolism in our flag that we seem to have forgotten. The 7 red stripes stand for hardiness, valor and courage. The 6 white stripes represent purity and innocence. Together, the 13 stripes represent the 13 colonies which became the 13 original states.

THE RED JACKETWhen you are nominated for an officer’s position, then voted into that position, there is a short lead time to acquire things and knowledge needed to fill the position.

The blue of our flag denotes vigilance, perseverance, justice and freedom. Red stands for hardiness and valor, with white representing purity and innocence. I love July, our flag, and patriotic holidays. Immediately following the 9/11 tragedy, flags and banners were displayed on our cars, homes, and businesses. Why does it take a horrible tragedy to inspire patriotism in citizens? Are we too busy? Are we complacent? I don’t think so. I think we simply forget. Then when a patriotic holiday rolls around, we hurry to WalMart or Dollar Tree to snap up some flags and banners, if they are available. Being from Arkansas, I am of course, a Johnny Cash fan. In fact, my grandmother and Johnny’s mother were best of friends and were neighbors in Kingsland, Arkansas. One of the hits recorded by Johnny Cash is entitled “That Raggedy Old Flag.” It tells the story of why one town displayed a ratty, torn, flag with holes. There is a video on YouTube of this song and I urge you to view this video of the months with a patriotic day designated as such. Fly your flags, display them proudly. Remember the lives lost and the blood shed for the right to display this gorgeous standard. There is nothing more beautiful than our stars and stripes waving in the wind against a clear, blue sky. Salute it with pride.

Wow! Do we at Dallas 71 have something to be very proud of! About a year ago a Dallas Fireman lost his life in the line of duty. There is an organization named “Brotherhood Ride,” made up of firefighters, law enforcement officers and emergency medical personnel who ride bicycles to HONOR those who have died in the line of duty, to show the families, friends, coworkers and community that they will never be forgotten. This organization contacted our Lodge to see if we would help them in their ride to Texas and we responded overwhelmingly. We allowed them to stay overnight in our Lodge, fed them a chicken fried steak dinner and served breakfast the following morning. There were 34 riders and 19 support personnel. Each and every one of them thanked us in person and bragged that our Lodge is the best at which they have stayed. We really lived up to our motto “Elks Care—Elks Share.” I am proud that so many of our members and ladies volunteered to help and make it a big success. It just shows how great our members are and how great a Lodge that we have.

ELK OF THE MONTH

PATSY MITCHELLFor my Elk of the Month of July I have chosen Patsy Mitchell. Patsy worked very hard to make the Brotherhood Ride go smoothly. She helps out in the kitchen, works with the Wii-bowling teams and helps with anything that she is asked to do when it is good for the Lodge. Thanks, Patsy for being a True Elk.

We had 6 Elks at the Hospital and 5 Elks & Ladies working Bingo at the June 2 visit. Oue next visit is Monday, August 4. Come Join Us.

PULL TABSBob Finch, PSPWe must get back to and continue the wonderful pro-

gram of saving the pull tabs from bev-erage cans to benefit the special needs children. Please start saving again and bringing again. It’s easy, and means so much to them. Thank you very much for your help. 016290

So it was for me. I was asked to become the Lecturing Knight and the next week I was nominated and accepted by the membership. Then I was told I needed to order my red jacket. So I am thinking, WOW being an officer in the Elks can be an expensive proposition. I made inquiries for renting a tux with a white coat. At Monday lunch I again made mention of this in passing. Then from out of the blue and to the rescue came two offers from fellow Elks to lend me a white coat. So I am thinking this is good, saved me a few bucks. I accepted the offer and obviously, like Cinderella, I went to the Ball all dressed up. Then it got close to the time I would need my red jacket, as the second Tuesday meeting was fast approaching. Once again offers came from other Elks wanting to help resolve the problem. The jacket arrived the Monday before the first meeting and was so large that I looked like 10-year-old kid wearing his father’s jacket! The point of my story is to testify to the phrase we have all heard: Elks Care, Elks Share. Please come join me and fellow officers in the season of joy and laughter. A BIG Thank You to the Elks who shared with me, you know who you are. THANK YOU.

Flag Day celebrations began with Boy Scouts raising a new flag in front of Lodge 71. The program continued in the Lodge meeting room with a beauti-ful rendition of the ‘Star Spangled Ban-ner’ by Pete Puckett. The history of the flag was given by Bob Finch, PSP as Boy Scouts presented the different flags that have flown over this country. A stirring response was then delivered by Russell Scott, PER. Pete Puckett directed every-one in singing ‘God Bless America’ and Robert Wilburn, PER then led the audi-ence in the Pledge of Allegiance. Bob Finch ended the program by giving a video presentation of properly retiring a flag. Bob read the patriotic poem that he wrote about retiring a flag after 9/11.

Past Grand Exalted Ruler Chuck Williams and his wife, Gladys also attended the pro-gram. ER Marion McDaniel presented one of his famous

hand-crafted wood canes to PGER Wil-liams, as well as a gift to Mrs. Williams. Bob Finch presented him with a framed copy of his poem. Refreshments were provided and served by the Dallas Elks Ladies, with beer and wine provided by the Past Exalted Rulers Association.

‘Old Glory’ was truly honored

I received a letter in the mail last month which I am pleased to have printed in the Elks Press. John Dillon

I would like to honor Jean Law, Carol James, Marjorie Dauterive and Glenda Shipp from the Elks Ladies. These ladies volunteer, or get vol-unteered, or just jump right

in to help be productive for the Lodge. I feel they do not receive the accolades they deserve, so it is my pleasure to make a donation to Dallas Elks Lodge #71 for $2,000.00 in honor of these four out-standing women. From an observer and admirer of their good work for 25 years.

Let’s reflect on the years of 2004 - 2007, the years of our member Bob Finch and his wife Dorothy and their quest to become Texas State President and Texas First Lady. Let us reminisce about the hard-working couples who followed Bob and Dorothy all around Texas, working in their Hospitality Rooms. Gene and Margaret Barton, Henry and Sally Powell (now deceased), Patsy Mitchell and Paul Perry (also, now deceased), Mark and Martha Kuehne and Tony and Fran Kickirillo. What a team of wonderful and dedicated Elks and their wives. They diligently worked hard, drove many miles uncontested, without any thought of reimbursement in mind, always looking ahead to achieving one goal: to get Bob elected as Texas State President. Our many thanks go out to these “GREAT FRIENDS”: who spent their own time and money. Did we have fun? Yes!! Also, thanks to Dallas Elks Lodge for their mon-etary and fraternal support. A big thank you to Bob Hazelwood (now deceased), one of the greatest, hard-working and dedicated Elks for chartering a bus and carrying 60 Elks, their wives and friends, with assistance from Margaret Lievsay, to the Fall Conference to witness the final vote. When the vote was announced, these 60 people yelled the loudest. Bob and Dorothy had won. Also, many thanks to Gene Barton for being my verifying vote counter. Thanks again, Gene.Quick thoughts: Stuffing Jalapeño peppers in Philadelphia, eyes burning, etc. For Henry Powell knowing the correct “Pass Word,” for Paul and Patsy having to scav-enge the neighborhood to find “condiments” for the Hospitality Room because we ran out of some stuff. Ha! Thank you. So many other things could be mentioned, but we will remember them forever. Thanks for reminiscing. Bob and Dorothy Finch Past State President, 2006-2007 Former Texas First Lady 2006-2007

n Memorial Day, our Lodge was honored to host the Brotherhood Ride, which consists of police officers,

firefighters and emergency care members who ride bicycles to honor those who have died in the line of duty. This year they rode to honor 19 Texas Fallen Firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2013. The ride, consisting of 43 riders and ten support personal, started their ride in Plaquemine, LA on May 21. The group arrived from Tyler, Texas at Lodge 71 on Monday, May 26 at 6:30 PM. They were served dinner and spent the night at the Lodge. The riders departed after breakfast on Tuesday morning at 10:00 AM, to continue their ride to West, Texas. The Honorable Jerry Allen, Dallas City Council District 10, the Honorable Angie Chen Button, Texas House of Representatives for District 112 and the Honorable Kenneth Sheets, Texas House Representative for District 107, were on hand to welcome the riders. Texas Elks Association was represented by President Ed Salazar. A number of local policeman and firefighters, as well as Lodge members, were also on hand to greet them. The group finished their ride on May 30 in Houston, TX. Our Lodge should be proud of the effort by many members who contributed numerous hours to make this the great success it was. Frank Krejci organized the event on behalf of the Lodge.
